ST. PAUL'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH
Letter From The Rector The Rev. George Adamik
APRIL 2011 VOLUME 36, ISSUE 3
ST. PAUL’S LETTER
Dear Friends,
Lenten Journey Thoughts
My whole spiritual journey has been
so powerfully shaped by the words of
Thomas Merton, in particular his
thoughts on the discovery of the ―true
self.‖ I recently came across a phrase of
Richard Rohr which expresses it in a
kind of catchy way. Jesus gives us ―real
eyes‖ to ―realize‖ where the ―real lies.‖
I would like to invite you during this
Lenten and Easter season to develop
your ―real eyes.‖ There is so much in
life that distracts us from the ―real.‖ So
often the distractions become the real
for us and lead to emptiness and
loneliness. Jesus suggests a way of
seeing that opens us to the real. Please
look through this newsletter and
discover both liturgical and educational
opportunities that will invite you to
consider seeing with the ―real eyes‖ of
Jesus.
Children and Youth
As we move through this interim
period of staffing for our children and
youth programs I want to update you
about where we are in our process.
There have been meetings with the
Children’s Ministry Committee and the
Youth Committee as well as the Youth Council. These meeting have been focused
on looking at where we find these programs now, and where we would like them to
be.
With the information gathered we are looking at the staffing requirements to
support these needs, including the number of hours necessary for these positions.
As we come to the conclusion of our stewardship campaign we are also looking at
what funding will be available to support the staffing needs. A Search Committee
is being formed to take the information gathered and begin a process of
advertising and interviewing. Recommendations will be made to me with final
hires made, hopefully in the summer.
Please keep this process in your prayers as we move ahead in this exciting
time for our children and youth programs.
George

Warden’s Corner For me, Lent is a time for
introspection and prayerful reflection. It
also means Spring is coming, and longer
days. Not to mention wondering what I
am going to give up for 40 days. Hard
pretzels are hard to give up! This month,
the stewardship drive comes to
conclusion and will be celebrated March
25th. We are short of our goal by a fairly
substantial amount. At the same time, the
current stewardship cycle comes to
conclusion – your pledge made in 2010
should be honored if at all possible by
March 31st. We have heard many
wonderful stories from the clergy and
fellow parishioners about their
experiences with giving and receiving in
return. Our vestry goals are ambitious,
and we listen to your voices and requests
regarding what you want St. Paul’s to
become. The vestry
wrestles regularly with issues
about staffing, utilities, campus
improvements, security, repairs,
youth programs, music programs,
external demands for increased giving,
starting new ministries and sustaining
existing ones, etc. We hear you, and we
want to respond. And the vestry and
clergy respond by carefully allocating
the gifts that are prayerfully given by
you, the parish. At this time of year, at
this time of reflection and sacrifice,
please consider pledging for the new
cycle, and honoring your pledge from
the prior cycle, so St. Paul’s can continue
on our path of dynamic growth and
support for you.

We rejoice in the births of twins,
James Carter Gossin and Natalie Reed
Gossin, children of Daniel and Ashley
Gossin.
We express our sympathy to the
Magee families’ on the death of their
mother and grandmother, Catherine
Magee; to Mary Hemperly for the death
of her father, John Foley; and to Steve
and Avis East for the death of their friend,
Richard Davis.

The mission of the Volunteer
Coordination Committee is two-fold: to
support the ministries and committees of
the parish and to help individuals learn
about and connect with those ministries
which feed their unique talents and desire
for service.
As part of our mission to support
ministries, we will be offering helpful tips
and reminders for ministry leaders.

On April 20, the Elderberries will
visit the J.C. Raulston Arboretum, located
not far from the Fairgrounds. The
Arboretum is a research and teaching
garden, largely maintained by N.C. State
University students, faculty, volunteers,
and staff. There is no charge to tour this
nationally acclaimed beauty spot, and
parking space is plentiful. It is hard to
think of a more fitting way to welcome
Spring than to spend an hour or two in
one of the most botanically diverse and
beautiful natural settings in America. All
are invited to attend. Watch the bulletin
for more information.

On Saturday, April 2, the MOMS
Group and the Fellowship Group are
teaming up to sponsor a tour of
Replacements Ltd. Replacements Ltd. is
a business located east of Greensboro
that has the world’s largest selection of
old and new dinnerware. Do you have
your grandmother’s china or your mother
-in-law’s crystal but are missing pieces
you would like to have? This is the place
where you can find just that piece!
Anyone at St. Paul’s who is interested in
going on this tour is welcomed.
We will meet at the St. Paul’s parking
lot at 11:00 a.m. and will stop and have
lunch on the way. We will tour the
facility (tours are given every 20
minutes) and shop for a while. We plan
to be back at St. Paul’s around 5:00 p.m.
Sign up on the poster located in the
narthex so we can coordinate the
transportation.

MINISTRY LEADER REMINDER-OF-THE-MONTH
Is your committee planning a fund-raiser? A limited number of fundraising events are approved each
year. Planning ahead is key. It’s not too early to begin plan-ning for fall events. In fact, sooner is better. And don’t for-
get… All fundraising requests must be submitted to the Ves-try’s fundraising committee for approval. Fundraising policies and applications are available on the St. Paul’s web site under
