President’s Report
The major event of this season was of course the abrupt end to the state league
competitions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic crisis. The pandemic created a huge
workload for the executive committee to cancel programs, negotiate employment contracts
and put in place policies and procedures to provide our members with a safe environment
and road map back to training activities.
UWA Water Polo is now a firmly entrenched University of Western Australia sporting club
affiliated with UWA Sport Pty Ltd. This partnership is rewarding members with opportunities
to use the university’s facilities (pool, gym etc), scholarship opportunities, access to grants
and providing some administrative activities.
The UWA Water Polo brand is widely recognised across Australia and we would be
considered one of the nation’s most prominent water polo clubs through our strong showing
in national junior championships and the Australian Waterpolo League teams the UWA
Torpedoes.
Nationally in the boy’s division, the18U Bears competing at the Australian Youth
Championships age group tournament won the bronze medal, 16U Blues won the shield and
the 14U Cubs won the Plate. The girls’ teams produced strong showings but did not win any
medals or division trophies.
The State League competitions produced strong showings by all senior and junior teams but
unfortunately as a result of the Covid-19 crisis the competitions were cancelled with
positions determined by ladder position. UWA teams secured 5 Premiership flags on this
basis.
The club has reached a size whereby the day to day operations cannot be managed by
volunteers alone. In season 2020/21 the direct employment by the Club of Jackie Vittino as
Administrator will enable the club to continue to function efficiently and allow for continued
growth of the membership.
The club has forward plans of constructing change rooms and toilets at HBF Water Polo
Pool and the committee is working on an application for a Club Restricted liquor licence. If all
approvals are achieved, members will enjoy a wonderful facility, the envy of the Australian
water polo community, in the not too distant future.
The above results are reward for the hard work the committee, coaches and managers have
put into our programs. Thanks to everyone involved and we hope that the experience has
been enjoyable and one that members will remember for a long time to come.
Finance
The club has traded profitably this past season posting a net surplus after depreciation of
$88,781. A major component of this profit comes from our junior programs particularly the
Friday night Flippaball and spring / summer camps.

The club has an annual membership revenue of $428,898 which the committee hopes to
maintain next season with the continued expansion of our junior programs and retention of
Juniors moving into Senior competition.
Sponsors Without the support of our sponsor’s business activities we would need to raise annual subscription fees considerably. Therefore, a special acknowledgement of our business community is necessary and, where possible, members should engage these businesses in any associated business activities. At the front of this report is a “Sponsors Board” scheduling the club’s sponsors.
Significant Contributions This season’s Best Club Member was awarded to Clare Barber, Secretary of the club, who in her second year on the committee did an amazing job organising the administration and taking a leading role during the Covid-19 pandemic period. Clare’s tireless efforts are an inspiration to all of us and we are fortunate that she will continue her good work this coming season. Other outstanding efforts worthy of special mention are Fia Rigo, the club’s Treasurer and Travis Smith as Vice President. Fia and Travis are passionate members of this club and work tirelessly in their fields of expertise. The entire committee is worthy of mention as each age delegate has an area of our club’s operation in which they are responsible and performed well. The efforts of our Committee lead to the strength of our club.
UWA Water Polo Club Development Fund In June 2018, the Club launched the UWA Water Polo Development Fund as a tax deductible fund through the Australian Sports Foundation. The Australian Sports Foundation provides an established and reputable basis for launching a project and provides the necessary administrative support. Funds were donated early in the season to support purchase of a new BBQ for club use and following identification by coaches of an equipment need, a distribution from the fund enabled the purchase of rebound training nets. As at 30 April 2020, donations totalled $16,630. Many thanks to the Donors.
Sports Grants The Club continues to make applications for grant funding. A Club First Aid course was held funded by a Community Volunteer Grants enabling 20 of our members to attend a course free of charge as well as purchase of referee bibs and whistles. Peter Hughes

Uniform Shop Denise Dalton continued in the role of Club Uniform coordinator this season. Thank you to Denise for all her efforts in ensuring that members have the correct uniform and present professionally at Junior and Senior State League, Australian Youth Championships and when touring. A couple of new initiatives were trialed this season. Delfina Bag orders were placed through a central event via Revolutionise to facilitate payment and collection of orders. With the appointment of a Clubroom manager items were able to left in the clubrooms for collection providing greater flexibility to members. With the merging of Kukri, the club purchased all stock on hand at a discounted price. This enabled the Club to hold shop openings prior to the Australian Youth Championships in January to allow teams to get uniform. This facilitated sizing and access. With the Club’s intention to review uniform design, it is acknowledged that some uniform items were in short supply. The Club appointed a sub-committee of Cassandra Thompson, Denise Dalton and Susi Pedley, all previously involved with the club uniform development to investigate alternative supplier options and uniform design to ensure best options are continued for members in terms of products and pricing. It is proposed that new uniform lines will be transitioned to the Club over the next two seasons.
UWA Sport As a UWA Affiliated club, our club has a strong relationship with UWA. Mat Hughes and more recently in 2020, Pippa Pedley have represented the club well as Student representatives at Sports Council meetings. The Club participated in The University of WA “O-Day” on 21 February 2020 and received expressions of interest from 28 new students to join the club. Most of the students have played previously at various levels. Senior Men’s and Women’s Delegates will start communicating with these "newbies" to invite them down to attend Winter Competition and hopefully allocate them to UWA teams in the 2020/21 season. We acknowledge the continued support of Graham Pratt and Keely Waters from UWA Sport in our dealings with UWA.

2019 / 2020 Season
Masters For the Masters, the 2019-20 season kicked off with months of training leading into the
World Masters in Gwangju South Korea. After finishing a credible 4th, our Manager Keith
Robinson praised us and let us go sightseeing. A good time was had by … some. We left
Korea on the wise words of the leader of the free world: “Why would Kim Jong-Un insult me
by calling me old when I would NEVER call him “short and fat?” DT*
The WAWPI season started with UWA nominating 2 Teams in the Master’s Division, The
Grizzly Bears in the 60+ grade and Blacks in the 45+ grade. A lack of growth through too
few new players, and attrition because of other life commitments and injuries, saw the
number of players for UWA and other clubs diminish this year. Although battling numbers the
Blacks managed to win most games and the Bears their fair share as well.
We are sure if it was not for the premature end to the season due to “Kung Flu” (COVID -19),
we would have been in the mix for 2 more premierships. More importantly we all enjoyed our
sausages.

Thank you to Jackie Vittino who kept us informed and afloat throughout the season. And
thank you everyone (which was pretty much everyone) who put in time and effort to make
the season a Covid -19 success. As always Masters Polo was an enjoyable and social
experience.

A and B Grade Women A Grade
This season the competition was broken into a 2019 short season for A Grade and then a
Challenge Cup competition during term 1 2020. Whilst the earlier competition helped
prepare the ladies in the run up to the National competition it was not without its challenges.
The competition only included four teams (UWA, Triton, Melville Marlins and Applecross)
and started earlier than the regular season which many in the team were not prepared for.
Therefore in the first few weeks we had a number of the regular team away and combined
with some absences due to the Australian Junior World Championships in Portugal, school
commitments and injury we started the competition with a very enthusiastic, albeit, junior
team.

Our second half of the season was much stronger helped by increased availability of more
experienced players and the addition of two American imports. Similar to the previous year,
finals were played based on ladder position without a semi-final, but even though we had
finished fourth on the ladder, UWA City Beach played a great final game against Applecross
to win the Bronze medal. The team was coached by Vaughn Thomson and managed by
Francine Gibb. Fairest and best for the season was jointly won by Pippa Pedley and Glenda
Morgan which was very impressive considering both girls are born 2001 and it was their first
year of playing senior league as “seniors”.
B Grade
The UWA Rangers had a great season very ably coached by Raul Ricci and managed by
Martyn Evans. The team comprised senior ladies and juniors from both U18s and U16s. For
many of the junior girls it was their first competition against skilled senior players. This was a
wonderful opportunity for the girls to experience tougher competition than they were used to.
The team had a tough start to the season, but considerably improved over the course of the
season and worked hard to finish with 6 wins and 1 draw from 17 games. It was
disappointing that the season finished when it did as it meant that the team did not get the
opportunity to play finals having played well to finish fourth (out of 6 teams) for the season.
Jamie Cannon played some great games to win Fairest and Best for UWA Rangers. Special
mention also to Holly Greville for her excellent goal keeping all season.

Challenge Cup
A competition introduced by WPWA this season following A Grade season with the
objective of continuing a competition once the Australian Water Polo League
commenced and Torpedoes players became unavailable.
It was unfortunately fraught with forfeits for one reason or another and eventually
ceased due to Covid 19. The expanded squad however, were fully committed to the
team, turning up on time every Saturday prior to the game to warm up and if required
would help set up the pool. Thank you to all the parents who also performed their
table duties (and the other team’s at times) without fuss. Thank you to Raul who
coached and trained this squad so enthusiastically. For many of the girls on this
team it was their 4th game of the week with rules being modified to allow this to
ensure a team could be fielded.

A Grade Men The 2019 A Grade Men’s competition rang from mid-September to mid-December with the
very successful involvement of three UWA teams in the northern conference which is
continuing to evolve in a positive manner over the past 3 years.
The developing depth of the northern conference A Grade competition involving three UWA
teams Rangers (Born 2002), City Beach (Born 2001/2000, Flotsam (born 99+), and Triton is
an important component to the long term success of the UWA Torpedoes franchise. With the
quality of the Born 2001, 2002, 2003 coming through, the UWA Torpedoes is in a great
position to continue to develop its players along this pathway. The evolving support and
relationship with Triton is also important to the ongoing success of the UWA Torpedoes.
The northern conference had four boys selected to play for Australia at the 2019 FINA U20
Born 1999 World Championship. Congratulations to Lewis Putt and Matthew Oberman from
Triton and Matthew Murphy and Lachie Vos from UWA. The UWA Torpedoes and the
Northern conference has a bright future with these boys involved.
The Flotsam team made up of the clubs born 1999+ players was managed by Andrew
Konowalous led by UWA Torpedoes Captain Nic Hughes and Goalkeeper Harry
Konowalous. Nic Hughes was also the leading goal scorer and Fairest and Best winner. Tom
Sangster was also a strong contributor with 20 goals for the season. Flotsam finished 3rd in
the northern conference.
Rangers comprised of predominately Born 2002 boys in addition to three Born 2003 boys.
The team finished the northern conference in fourth position but were greatly improved from
the previous season. The Rangers were highly competitive throughout the season winning
four games, with the club looking forward to the ongoing maturity of the players. Centre Back
Riley Childs was the Best and Fairest winner, while Andrew Barber, Campbell McAullay,
Parsa Vadani and Menno Talbot made strong contributions during the season.
Congratulations to Rangers players Andrew Barber, Scott Lilleyman, Riley Childs and Julian
Kyriakou for making their Torpedoes debut this season. It should be noted that Campbell
McAullay, Charlie Emanuel, and Menno Talbot were scheduled to make their Torpedoes
debut in the final round against Adelaide Jets and Drummoyne Devils. I am sure that these
three players will get their opportunity in the upcoming season. The Rangers were coached
by Damian Kelly and managed by Paul Lilleyman.
The Born 2001 City Beach team has continued to improve over the past three seasons,
culminating in winning the northern conference, and progressing to the A Grade final which
they lost to MWPC South Fremantle. Centre back Riley Maurich was one of the team’s
leading goal scorers and the Fairest and Best winner, while Lachie Emanuel, Sam
Rowbottam and Matthew Murphy made fine contributions in the field it was Toby White who
led the defence with an outstanding season in goals. The City Beach team was coached by
Damian Kelly, assisted by Taz Williams and managed by the ever reliable Jane Maurich.

Challenge Cup
The Challenge Cup was planned for 8 weeks in February – March during the Australian
Water Polo League (AWPL), with the aim of providing competition for players not in the two
WA AWPL squads, or on the fringe of Fremantle and UWA teams. WPWA in conjunction
with the A Grade clubs needs to continue to develop the rules around player eligibility, to
ensure this vital competition remains viable, as it is an important component of the WA
Water Polo landscape.
The COVID19 pandemic severely impacted the 2020 Challenge Cup, with the club’s two
teams Rangers and City Beach finishing in the top two positions when the finals were
cancelled. Thank you to Damian Kelly, Taz Williams and Charlie Liggins for coaching the
club’s 2020 Challenge Cup teams.
Thank you to all the people who assisted the club with the organisation and administration of
the A Grade and Challenge Cup Seasons. Volunteers are the lifeblood of sport clubs and the
UWA Water Polo Club is no different.
Damian Kelly
Senior Women The Senior Women’s division of the club continues to grow with fantastic support received from Women’s Coach Vaughn Thomson. This season we managed to enter a team in every grade except D grade, a great result. Hopefully in the 20/21 season we will reach our target of representation in every grade. Although it was an abrupt end to the season, everyone enjoyed themselves. C Grade One team was entered in C Grade, the T-Rex’s. Captained by Alex Hughes, the T-Rex’s had a successful season and it was great to see so many returning to the club to form what we hope will be a bunch of chicks playing together until they’re old hens. Congratulations to Alex Hughes taking out the Fairest and Best for the team.
E Grade
The Sisters had a good season with a mixture of solid wins and close losses. Most of the
team have now been together for a number of years and enthusiasm for the game and the
clubrooms after the game continues to be strong. Captained this year by Megan Prentice and
Deb Bow who did a great job and well done to Margie O’Connor who was awarded Fairest
and Best for the team.
F Grade
The Emeralds team had a brilliant season, in what was only their second season. After no
wins last season, they managed to string multiple wins together and finished the season
strongly. We look forward to seeing what they can do next season. Captained by Jaime Smith
and coached by Quentin Megson and Raul Ricci, their skills improved out of sight and they

still hold the best bather’s title. Their enthusiasm throughout the season always continued to
the clubrooms post-game celebrating “win after win!”. Congratulations to Cath Farrell who
was awarded Fairest and Best for the team.
Masters - Vintage Sisters
For the second year in a row, a women’s team was entered into a Master’s competition. The
Bunbury Masters competition held in June 2019 saw the City Beach Vintage Sisters lose
most games but have a fantastic time. Thanks to Kelle Mason for organising a great
weekend for all the girls, there is still talk of vintage merchandise and future world
championship tours!
The emphasis throughout the season for all our women’s teams has been on playing water
polo for fun, fitness and friendships with the view to continue to build the number of women
players in the club, as well as providing opportunities for the junior players to gain some
exposure to the senior competition.
Acknowledgement and thanks must go to Raul Ricci who coached our Sunday training
sessions, helping all to improve their knowledge of the game and skills. Also to Jackie Vittino
who is always so helpful and organised all the awards for our players.

Senior Men The 2019/2020 Senior Men’s Season is one that every player in the club started with great
energy … and is also one that we’ll all never forget!
The season commenced with 10 UWA teams entered in the Men’s Senior State League
competition (compared to 8 teams in 2018/19 season):
B-Grade: 3 x UWA teams (out of 6 in the competition).
C-Grade: 2 x UWA teams (out of 7 in the competition).
D-Grade: 1 x UWA team (out of 6 in the competition).
E-Grade: 2 x UWA teams (out of 10 in the competition).
F-Grade: 2 x UWA teams (out of 11 in the competition).
Over 140 men registered for the season in the 5 divisions (B to F Grade).
As always, the various divisions were very competitive. It is noted that some clubs in the
competition only register teams for the lower E and F Grade levels.
Due to the global Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, the season ceased effective 17 March
2020. The results of the 2019/20 season, therefore, were determined by the ladder leaders
at the time. The Men’s B-Grade “Rangers” Team topped the minor premiership tables.

Fraser Smith (B-Grade Hellfish), Ray Mayers (D-Grade Bears) and Pat Williams (F-Grade
Yellers) won the Water Polo WA Association Fairest and Best for their respective grades.
New Rules
Several new rules relating to “front water” and 5m penalties, flying substitution, corner rules
and the goalkeeper able to go beyond half way were brought into play for the 2019/20
season, and most of these were well received by our teams and well utilised.
General Training The UWA Swimming Pool was booked for “open” trainings on Sunday afternoons (from 3.30pm – 5pm) and was generally well attended by the men’s senior group. A social get-together was also enjoyed most Sunday’s after the training.
Club Team of the Year Congratulations to the E-Grade Horse team, captained by Josh Everett, for taking out the O’Keefe Trophy for Greatest Team Contribution. This was the team’s first year with the Club. It’s great to see the younger crew (U20s) remaining involved in the Men’s Senior State League competition after completion of junior water polo years. Josh did a super job herding the ‘Horses’ and we are looking forward to seeing the team develop in future seasons. This is a demographic in the club that the Committee recognised required development and
we are delighted to see our “young” Seniors engage with the club. As identified in last year’s
Annual report the club must continue to provide a strong retention pathway.
Wednesday Night Referees The Club provides one referee for all State Senior League games. Thank you to our club members who filled this role and to Jackie Vittino for co-ordinating the roster each week. It is no easy task with a moving feast of fixture times and last minute changes. Refereeing is an unenviable task and with the new rule changes open to much discussion poolside. B-Grade Men
UWA Rangers and UWA Hellfish in 1st and 2nd place on table before season ended after Round 17.
UWA Dropbears placed 5th on the table.

UWA Dugongs were in 2nd place on the table before the season ended after Round 17.

UWA Bears placed 2nd on table before season ended after round 17.

The Club Bar was well supported at all times during the season by the senior men’s group –
especially on Wednesday nights; but also the café on Saturday mornings after the early
training sessions. As a Good Sports Club we are conscious of the community support and
benefits of the relationships developed in this social environment.
Finally a thank you to all team managers for ensuring team numbers each week. Forfeits are
penalised by WPWAI with fines and this cost is usually passed onto teams. This role and
and the prompt score entry following games is crucial.

Post Season Winter Competition - 2019 The club’s internal, social winter water polo competition had another successful run in 2019
with both senior men’s and women’s teams represented. Those attending are allocated to
mixed teams from various grades and it allows players of different experience and ability to
play together. The main aim of this social competition is to encourage existing players to
maintain their fitness levels and also to introduce new players to the club in an informal way.
Referees started enforcing the new rules changes during the 2019 winter competition so that
players were ready for this at the start of the new season.
The collection of payment from players worked much better this year, with Dan Vittino using
the eftpos machine to charge players (either $60 for the whole winter comp or $5 per weekly
session). Players all ended up at the club afterwards to enjoy some social interaction.

Juniors UWA had 24 teams competing in the Junior State League competition with B Division on Sunday afternoons and A Division and U18 B Division on Monday nights. Three UWA teams finished top of the ladder and were awarded the WPWA Premiership with the early termination of the season due to Covid 19. U18A Boys Blue coached by Oliver Davis and managed by Liesl Brogan U16A Boys Bears coached by Stephen Cook and managed by Maryanne Marshall U16A Girls Bears coached by Kim Johnson, managed by Philippa Johnson
U14 Junior – Boys The Club entered five teams in the 14&U Boys Junior State League Competition for the
2019/20 season. The Bears, Blues and Golds competed in “A” division and the Greens and
Cubs in the “B” Division. The boys were fortunate to have a number of very experienced
coaches throughout the season. Damian Kelly, Andrei Kovalenko & Raul Ricci provided the
bulk of the coaching at the club training sessions. This year we were very lucky to have a
number of junior coaches volunteer their time to coach the JSL teams on game day. The
Bears and Blues, consisted of 2006 born players with the Gold team comprising of 2007
born players. They finished second, third & fifth on the ladder respectively. The Bears and
Blues would have been destined for a UWA Derby semi-final if the COVID crisis had not
brought the season to a premature end.
The Blues were managed by Melinda Braddock & were coached on game day by Byron
Kelly with Mark Kelly standing in as his substitute when Byron was not available due to
Torps commitments (and an extended Bali trip). The Blues finished the season on 21 points
with 7 wins & 5 losses. Mack Williams was the Fairest and Best recipient with Llewyn
Thurston taking out the Most Improved award.
The Bears were managed by Holly Lonnqvist & were coached by Andrew Barber who was
this year’s UWA Junior Polo Bear of the Year recipient. Charlie Liggins also helped coach
when Andrew was not available due to year 12 WACE exams & Torps commitments. The
Bears finished the season on 29 points with 9 wins, 1 draw & 2 losses. Tim Lonnqvist was
the Fairest and Best recipient, with Mitch Roche taking out the Most Improved award. Tim
Lonnqvist also took out the award from Water Polo WA as the Fairest and Best for the entire
U14 JSL competition.
The Gold team was managed by Suzette Pritchard and coached by Quentin Megson. It was a tough year for our development team as they were out played by the older teams with bigger bodies. In saying that the improvement throughout the season was evident and they should be commended for training hard and developing well as the season progressed. Luke Megson was the Fairest and Best recipient, with Benji Pritchard taking out the award for Most Improved. The Greens were coached by Ben & Matt Howie and were managed by Flick & Michael
Panegyres. The team consisted of 2006 and 2007 born players and competed in the “B”

division. The boys had a solid year with 5 wins, 1 draw & 8 losses and finished in equal 6th
position. Tom Edibam had a dominant season and took out the Fairest and Best player, with
Lachlan Giles taking out Most Improved.
The Cubs, was our youngest team of predominantly 2008 born boys players. They were
managed by Penny Regan & coached by Cliff Woods. They finished equal 6th on the ladder
with the other UWA team, and the improvement in their game throughout the year was
evident. The Cubs actually had a draw against the top placed team in the second last game
of the season so it’s clear that the 2008 cohort is going to be a very strong group of boys in
the coming years. The group is so strong they had to create an additional award with Jake
Taboni as the Fairest and Best, Sam Regan the MVP & Will Massey the Most Improved.
It was great to see the big lefthander Ed Hanley take out the club award for the UWA U14
rising star. This was very close contest with Tim Lonnqvist, Mack Williams, Ethan Kelly &
Guy Liggins all in the mix.
Many thanks to the parents who support their boys by volunteering to coach, manage, run
the shot clock and score throughout the JSL season – your assistance is invaluable and
really appreciated.
Australian Youth Championships
We had two UWA teams travel to Brisbane this year to compete at the Australian Youth
Championships (AYC). The focus on this year’s tournament was to ensure that the boys
were as prepared as possible, and it was awesome to see how well they all embraced the
pre-tournament “Campaign Yogi”. We had two boys (Isaac & Ed) attend all 36 sessions in
the lead up to the AYC departure and we had several boys that only missed a few of the
sessions. All of the boys showed great commitment to training and they trained the house
down over the three week period. During campaign Yogi the boys were very fortunate to
have been coached by Damian Kelly, Charlie Liggins, Quentin Megson, Byron Kelly and
Andrew Barber. A special thanks to Charlie who volunteered his time and attended all 36
sessions. Charlie really brought the boys together as team and showed a new level of
enthusiasm in the lead up to the AYC tournament.
The Bears were our main team of born 2006 boys and the Cubs, our development team that
consisted of 2007 & 2008 born boys. Managers were Philippa Johnson & Cliff Woods, and
supported coaches Charlie Liggins & Quentin Megson. There were 28 teams competing at
the AYC. Despite only losing one game in a penalty shootout the Bears finished 5th. The
Cubs had a tough time at the beginning of the draw against the bigger bodies, but they
finished strongly and ended up taking out the Shield.
All of the boys had a great tournament and really benefited from the experience. A big
thanks to all of the families that provided the boys the opportunity to travel to QLD as well as
those that came along to support the boys.

U16 Junior – Boys The Club entered three teams in the 16&U Boys Junior State Competition for the 2019/20
season. The Bears and Blues competed in the A Division and the Greens in the B Division.
The boys were fortunate to have dedicated coaches, Stephen Cook and Taz Williams.
The Bears, consisting of 2004 born players, were undefeated and looking forward to playing
in the finals. The Blues finished 4th on the ladder and were set for a derby semi-final. The
results we will never know! With the premature end to the season, no finals were played, the
Bears were deemed winners of the 16& U Boys competition A Division. Congratulations to
the boys and volunteer coach Stephen Cook.
The Blues, as expected, had a hard season being the younger age group. This year the
2005 boys were combined into one team of 14 players. Taz had his work cut out for him
rotating the bench! Towards the end of the season, and after the experience from Nationals,
the Blues teamwork paid off and they started to win and climb the ladder securing a spot in
the finals. Well done to Taz Williams and a big thank you to Lisa Lilleyman for managing.
This season, 16& U Boys, entered a team into the Sunday WPWAI B Division for the first
time. The Greens were coached by Stephen Cook and managed by Anne-Maree Cook.
The boys did really well and by all accounts enjoyed the competition. They finished 3rd on
the ladder and were set for finals!
Thank you to all parents for helping with the scoring throughout the season. Your support is
much appreciated. A special mention of thanks to Coach Cookie for coaching two teams in
the 16&U and for coaching the 2004 boys at Nationals.
Australian Youth Championships
Another successful Championships for all involved. The co-ordination of the event was
exceptional, for our club, with Clare and Travis working overtime to ensure it ran smoothly
for the entire club. The 16& U Boys entered two teams, the Bears and Blues. The Bears
came 7th and the Blues won the Shield.
Stephen Cook coached the Bears with Maryanne Marshall as manager. The boys won 5
games, lost 2 and drew one. The highlight being the Adelaide Jets draw with a penalty
taken after the final whistle to get into the quarter finals. One to be remembered, especially
by Rory Dalton.
Andrei Kovalenko coached the Blues with Lisa Lilleyman as manager. The development
team were challenged but had an invaluable experience with Kova. Kova did an amazing
job, encouraging them and imparting his invaluable knowledge before during and after the
game. Thank you Kova.
Even though the 16&U boys didn’t come back with a medal the boys had some fabulous
games, undoubtedly improved and tried their absolute best.

In A division, the Blues and Bears were very evenly matched. Both teams had a win, loss

the Melville teams. It would have been a cracking grand final except for Covid 19.
The Greens had a cracking competition in B division with the top three teams reasonably
evenly matched.

Andrew Barber was also awarded the fairest and best for the U18 State League competition
as voted by the WPWA referees.
The Club entered two teams to the AYC national competition in Brisbane in January; one
born 2002 Bears team and one born 2003 Blue development team. The Bears were
coached by Damian Kelly with Steven Kyriakou as manager. Matt George coached the
Blues with Rob Lodge as Manager. Both teams performed well. The Bears took home the
Bronze and UWA Blue achieved 12th position. It should be acknowledged that this is a group
of players who have won National Championships at U14, U16 level and again medalled in
2020.
A large proportion of the U18 boys also played A grade which is a great experience for
development of the player and some made their debut with Torpedoes.
A big thankyou to all coaches and managers for Monday nights and for the AYC. Your help
and time are invaluable and sets up the continued involvement of the boys whether it be in
seniors or at AYC next year.

U14 Junior – Girls
Australian Youth Championships, Brisbane 11 -16 January 2020
The U14 girls were able to send two teams, B06 Bears and B07 Golds, to the Australian Youth Championships in Brisbane. The teams placed 15th and 24th respectively.
Whilst the Junior State League in WA offers little in the way of adequately preparing the girls for the National competition, our teams certainly held their own. Having to play more experienced teams with varying levels of physicality and ability meant that our girls were able to learn to adapt their play to effectively challenge their opponents, and also how to understand/adapt to the different refereeing styles, which is not an easy thing to do.
These tournaments are great as a team building and development experience for the girls who generally come away a little tougher and a little more determined.
I would like to thank Amber Jones [B06 manager] and Erica Salt [B07 manager] for travelling with the girls to Brisbane and taking such good care of them. To all the families that travelled to Brisbane with the team - a huge thank you for all your help with table duties, massages, first aid, shopping, meals, running commentary, photographs and most importantly support of the girls. Last but not least, a thank you to our two awesome coaches Sam and Raul for your passion and commitment to the game and to the girls – we are lucky to have you.

The 2019/20 season continued to be a challenge for our junior girls, with UWA fielding four of the six teams competing in the U14A competition. We were fortunate to have the numbers for two B06 and two B07 teams that were pretty evenly matched, allowing for the overall development of our junior players and competitive play on Monday nights, even though we had at least two UWA teams playing each other every week. The girls had a great time in the water every week and their development as the season progressed was evident. It’s a pity that the season came to such an abrupt end as our B06 Golds were set to take on Melville in the finals and it would have been a great game to watch; a gold medal may well have been on the cards for our Golds!
It has been a pleasure to represent the u14 girls at committee level, and I look forward to the 2020/21 season.

Vaughn Thompson remained head of the ladies coaching program assisted by Sam
Shead. Game night coaching was run by our senior players: Kim Johnson, Ali
Weisler, Bec and Tash Liddle, all our girls very much appreciated this initiative.
Thank you very much to the whole 2019/20 coaching team. All our teams were
coached as a whole squad making connections across this cohort stronger. Due to
the early finishing of the season the rankings are based on the season ladder and
not from finals played.
At the start of the season, fitness and skills assessments were undertaken to allow
coaches to know where each player was at and where best to improve each
individual’s play. It also helped decide team placements. Initially, the white team was
placed in B division however they proved too good for this competition and after 3
weeks were promoted to A division with the backing of their parents. All families
were advised it would be a tough season with several losses expected but more

would be learnt, in terms of water polo, than by staying in B division. As several of
this team were joining the cohort based AYC teams this was vital. We thank this
team for their resilience this season.
The Christmas holidays 2019/20 were full of water polo with our girls committed and
focused on the Australian Youth Championships in Brisbane. Hours of training were
undertaken by the majority of our girls with great improvement in skill, fitness and
team work gained. We took 2 teams, 22 girls, the Bears (04), coached by Vaughn
and Gold (05) coached by Sam Shead to Brisbane. Rebecca Morse and I managed
these teams with Michelle Sayer as food coordinator. The championship was
enjoyed by all with some fantastic water polo being played by everyone. Well done
Bears, who came 7th, and Golds! As a result of their play during these games, Bella
Sayer and Alice Williams were selected for the Australian 2004 squad.
Congratulations girls!
This year was meant to be the u16 girls’ inaugural participation in the Panpacs water
polo competition. We had a team of 12 girls heading to New Zealand to play in the
U16 and U18 tournament. Unfortunately, it has been cancelled due to the pandemic.
Going forward, once the dust has settled, we will hopefully get our July tours up and
running again with Europe one year, Panpacs the next.
Congratulations to Bella Sayer and Sophie Johnson who played their first games
with the Torpedoes this season.
Thank you to all our girls who have helped the club out this season by either
coaching Flippaball and DSC teams, refereeing, attending busy bees, community
open days, goal judging and supporting at Torpedoes games to name but a few. This
group of girls are always willing to help with a smile and are very supportive not only
of their team mates but to others around them. The club should be very proud of
these girls.

U18 Junior – Girls UWA entered three teams in the U18 girls’ competition, two in A Grade and one in B Grade.
The A Grade competition had five teams which meant three byes over the season and the B
Grade team had four teams.
The UWA Bears originally comprised four 2002 girls and six 2003 girls. Interestingly, only
two 2002 girls had remained with the Club from the many who played U14s. Given the small
numbers in both cohorts the group was combined for the UWA Bears team. In the second
part of the season, team numbers were strengthened with the addition of a 2005 player.

UWA Bears had a great season with 9 wins and 1 draw from 12 games to finish second on
the ladder. The team was coached by Vaughn Thomson and Tayla Barbas and managed by
Julie Tomas. Fairest and best for the season was Rebecca Gibb. Rebecca had an excellent
season and also was the recipient for the Waterpolo WA State League U18 Girls Fairest &
Best.
The second U18 A team, UWA Blue comprised ten 2004 girls who played their games each
week having first played a U16 game. A brilliant effort from all these girls. This team
improved over the season and finished with four wins from 12 games to finish fourth on the
ladder. UWA White was coached by Vaughn Thomson and Kim Johnson and managed by
Philippa Johnson. Fairest and best for the 2019-20 season was Isabella Sayer.
It would have been wonderful to have had the opportunity to play finals as we like to think
that both teams could have made it to the Grand Final for an all UWA final.
Our third team, UWA White, played in the U18 Girls B division. This team comprised 11 girls
(five 2002 and six 2003), some who had previously played A or B grade and others who
were strong swimmers who had played school waterpolo and wanted to try playing at a more
competitive level. Many of these girls had school or other sporting commitments and didn’t
want to also commit to waterpolo training. They improved considerably over the season
which is impressive considering they didn’t train at all. They finished with three wins from 15
games. They were coached by Sana Brotherson and managed by Gretchen Calder. Fairest
and best for the season was Iman Kaplanian.
The low numbers of girls in the 2002 and 2003 cohorts combined with the timing of the
Australian Youth Championships in Brisbane in January meant that we had to be creative to
be able to send an U18 Girls team. We were fortunate that two 2002 girls from Geraldton
Waterpolo Association were able to join the UWA team and that a 2004 U16 girl was already
in Brisbane and thus was able to play with us as well. We ended up with a wonderful group
of 11 girls, four 2002s, six 2003s and one 2004 who competed at AYC in 2020. Whilst the
Geraldton girls were able to join us for the summer camps in the lead up to the competition,
our first game as a team was not until AYC. Considering that our team was primarily a
development team and that they hadn’t played together before, the girls did very well. Every
single girl improved over the course of the competition. It was a fabulous week and there
were a lot of laughs with the girls making the most of the long commuting time with some
very entertaining car journeys. A brilliant group of girls who represented the Club
exceptionally well and were wonderful role models to the younger Club teams.
Our best wishes go with all the 2002 girls as they move into the senior competitions.

Friday Night Flippaball Our Flippaball program keeps growing! In season 19/20 a record 44 teams participated and
a 5pm timeslot was introduced.

Flippaball continues to be a hugely popular night out for young families. For the second year
running with thanks to the Berti family from the Re Store in Northbridge, the support has
been outstanding. Flippaball also benefited from our new Club Manager Sonya Orso’s
initiatives, with many snack items on sale each week, and novelty nights, eg Halloween.
Sonya was assisted in the bar by Josh Leaman.
In a break from tradition, BBQ and refereeing duties were shared across the entire Junior
community, giving U14, 16 &18 Boys and Girls an opportunity to referee, while their parents
assisted with food service. No pick up or BBQ preparation was required by parents as this
was taken care of by Sonya. Parent volunteers enjoyed the experience and some of our
Juniors discovered they loved refereeing.
The small goals, four field configuration, size 3 ball and 4 x 6 minute quarters continued to
work well for the age groups involved. The Club purchased 4 tear drop flags prior to the
start of the season to identify the four pools, which eliminated the often asked question -
”which pool is pool x”.

Fixtures were complex and teams did a fantastic job of arriving at the correct time, and the
correct pool each week. If our numbers continue to grow we will look at expanding the 5pm
time slot next season.
The FlippaBall season was interrupted by the Australian Water Polo League Torpedoes
home game on 14 February 2020. Games on the 20th of March and 3rd of April were
cancelled due to the Covid-19 virus. The Presentation and Windup unfortunately could not

proceed on the 3rd of April. Novelties purchased for players will be retained for season
20/21.
It was a fantastic season in so many ways. Beautiful weather practically every Friday night,
so many happy kids soaking up the outdoors, easy Friday night dinners, and a bustling
crowd of supporters.
Huge thanks to all the team coaches and managers, in particular the UWA Juniors who took
on volunteer coaching positions. Clubs are about community and this is another great
example of community service and the never ending support that our Club receives from its
members.
Special thanks to Max Clarke for his work supervising the set up and pack down of the
flippaball pool all season.
Flippaswim
Flippaswim training sessions were available on Monday and Wednesday afternoons during
Term 4 and Term 1 and a dedicated FlippaSwim session for the older DSC children on
Friday afternoons. Due to FlippaBall commencing at 5pm on Friday afternoons and low
numbers of registrations the DSC girls combined with the U14 Girls training led by Raul
Ricci.
Registrations were as follows, up from 111 in 17/18, 141 in 18/19 and this season a total of
171.

Damian Kelly was assisted by Raul Ricci, Taz Williams, Mat Murphy, Allison Wieseler and Kim Johnson (Torpedoes player imports) in Term 4. In Term 1, Damian was unavailable
due to Torpedoes commitments and Raul was assisted by Taz Williams, Andrew Barber,
Ella Fracaro and Pip Pedley. As per previous seasons numbers dropped off as the season
went on, particularly on Fridays.

This season there were 27 teams in the DSC as follows –

The Year 5/6 games were played in third a pool with size 3 ball and small goals.
The Year 7+ played a half pool format with size 4 ball.
A smaller number of JSL U14 Boys and Girls played DSC and JSL this season. Exceptions
were DSC Girls and Boys that were identified and upgraded to the Junior State League
program as the season went on. By the end of the season 219 pure DSC registrations were
recorded.
The Year 5/6 Boys and Girls competitions were very healthy with many teams coming up
from FlippaBall the season before. There were also new teams, and some teams
experiencing water polo for the first time. The two MLC girls teams were examples of this.
In the Year 7+ Boys Competition we were fortunate to be able to split the Competition in to
two grades once all teams had played each other, ensuring a healthier competition.
In the Year 7+ Girls Competition three Year 9 teams participated, a first for the Club. Two of
these teams MLC Sea Monkeys and SMAGS 9 dominated the Competition. These girls
could be directed to playing in a Junior State League B Division Competition next season.
Key popular points of the DSC are the relaxed atmosphere and the enjoyment participants
get from playing social water polo with their friends.
We were again very fortunate to have a large number of Junior State League players take on
coaching roles on Saturday mornings. This is essential for the success of the Competition
given the lack of water polo playing parents available to coach.
Semi Finals took place on the 14th of March and Grand Finals were scheduled for the 21st
of March but were unable to take place due to Covid-19.
While the outcome of the cancelled Grand Finals remains unknown the following teams
finished top of their pool.

Thanks to regular referees Charlie Lennon, Pat Williams, Scott Lilleyman and Andrew
Barber. Mention should also be made of the Junior Community Referee accreditation
program overseen by Club Secretary Clare Barber. The DSC provided the perfect
opportunity for our up and coming referees to shadow and be assessed.

Treasurer’s Report I am pleased to present the Club’s Financial Report for the year ended 30th April 2020.
This year’s result shows a Net Operating Surplus of $98,257 before depreciation (2019
$56,178) and a Net Operating Surplus after depreciation of $88,781 (2019 $48,655).
Cash Reserves at the end of 2020 year were $194,733 up from the previous year (2019:
$80,922).
Please refer to the Club’s Annual Financial Report for full details. These will be available at
the AGM.
A summary of the results is detailed below.
The club recorded the following movements in the major revenue streams.
1. Membership, Camps, DSC and FlippaSwim revenue increased to $428,898 an increase
of $50,087 from 2019.
2. Bar revenue increased to $65,113 an increase of $10,247 from 2019.
3. Uniform Shop – turnover increased to $31,642 and increase of $13,716 from 2019. The
profitability of the Uniform shop was decreased as a result of having to buy all Kukri
stock from Kukri and the end of their contract.
4. Sponsorship revenue decreased this year to $14,089 down from $20,460 in 2019. The
Club continues its sponsorship drive through the playing membership. On behalf of all
the Committee, I would like to thank all our Sponsors for their vital and continued support
of the club.
5. We were eligible to register for the ATO Cash Flow assistance of $10,000 this year as a
result of the COVID pandemic.
During the year major expenses incurred include:
1. Coaching – The combined coaching and refereeing costs was $161,605 a small
decrease from $164,377 in 2019.
2. Pool Hire and Gate Entry– Total of $83,444, an increase of $30,404 from 2019.

3. There was no Administration fee this year from the APIL office to cover administration
costs incurred by APIL staff doing club duties. A decrease of $38,250 from 2019.
The continued support from our committee members and support volunteers is greatly
appreciated.
Special thanks go to the following people:
Jackie Vittino who plans and orchestrates the successful and ever-expanding
Flippaball, DSC and Junior programs. She provides our members an excellent
service.
Clare Barber continues to be an invaluable resource for our club who continually
steps in to assist the committee with many different tasks. Clare continues to foster
excellent relationships with all external stakeholders to the benefit of the club and its
members.
VP Travis Smith continued to provide the Club with his office staff on a
complimentary basis to assist with travel arrangements for all travelling groups. This

the Age Delegates who liaised with Travis’s office to assist in completing these travel
arrangements.
Café – Sonya Orso commenced with the club as our new Café Manager during this
season. Thank you to both Peter Symons for his handover and to Clare Barber for
her continued support of Sonya. Sonya has settled in that role and is offering some
good quality food and beverage to our members.
Uniform Online Shop – A big thank you to Denise for managing the Kukri Clothing
Store and the sale of the bathers through our own shop.
Finally, my sincere thanks goes to Peter Hughes, who maintains the driving force behind
the club’s success to enable it to perform at a local and national Level. I look forward to
