SUNDAY FLOWERS DEDICATIONS February 26: Jane Blackwell “In loving memory of my father, Raleigh Parking, 1896–1977.”

February 5, 12 & 19: open.

To sponsor flowers for Sunday worship in honor of a loved one or occasion, call the office or sign up in the volunteer workroom.

ALL IN THE FAMILY Elizabeth Halfacre will exhibit two mixed-media collages in the NW Collage Society Winter Show, January 19–March 26, at the Cascadia Art Museum, in Edmonds: “Collaged Impressions of Northwest Social Realism and the American Scene 1930–1950.” Do you have a significant personal or family milestone to share with your fellow members at UUC? To submit an item for “All In the Family,” please send a brief description of the event to be honored to [email protected].

UUC AT THE SEATTLE WOMXN’S MARCH ON JANUARY 21 UUC was well represented in the Seattle Womxn’s March on January 21. The crowds trying to get to Judkins Park, the official starting point, were so great that many of us couldn’t join to contingent with the banner, but marched separately.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY Once a month, usually on the second Sunday, our plate collection is dedicated to a social justice effort. Our January 8 plate collection for the Tenants Union totaled $3486. On January 14, the Islamic Center of the Eastside in Bellevue was burned. As an act of solidarity with our Muslim neighbors and in support of their rebuilding

efforts, we let those attending our January 14 service know that our plate collection would be sent to the Islamic Center and we donated $3,534 for them! Our church school students and others made cards of sympathy and support to send too.

UUC WITH THE NATURE CONSORTIUM ON MLK DAY On Monday, January 16, about 35 volunteers from UUC spent three hours clearing invasive blackberries from a hill in the Duwamish Greenbelt. The weather was cool and dry, and the group cleared over 2100 sq. ft! Our next UUC work party is scheduled for Earth Day, April 22, and sign-up information will be available soon.

UUC AND TEEN FEED

UUC has had a relationship with Teen Feed for more than 12 years. On the first Sunday every month, about 15 members of our congregation, ranging in ages from 14 to 65, prepare and serve dinner to about 40 teens in the University District. In December, UUC expanded its relationship. With our Warm Clothes Giving Program to benefit Teen Feed last month, UUC families donated 170 gloves, 89 pairs of wool socks, 74 hats, 42 scarves, 35 sweatshirts, over $1300 in cash and gift cards, and so much more. King County estimates over 1,000 homeless and young adults on any given night...so, it is valuable for our kids to learn more about this topic and we are pleased that Tom Rembiesa, the Executive Director from Teen Feed, spoke with them last Sunday morning. For more information about volunteering with Teen Feed, contact UUC’s Pam Mentz at [email protected].

We will have our regular bimonthly meeting on Friday evening, starting with our potluck at 6:30 p.m. We’ll be talking more politics tonight—what’s happening, what’s coming, and what we might do about it. Here are a couple of articles about the current state of affairs (thank you, Allison):

A QUESTION OF VOCATION: A HALF-DAY WORKSHOP Saturday, February 4, 9 a.m. to noon in Knatvold As members and leaders (or potential leaders) at UUC, we commit to faithful action, responsible stewardship and prophetic vision, and the risk of leaving the safety of known ways. But what is it that we are called to do and be in the world? We’ll explore how to choose and develop lives of courage, commitment, passion and impact. Rev. Jon Luopa, and others lead this half-day workshop. There is no fee to attend. This workshop is part of UUC’s ongoing Leadership Development Series. The next in the series is “Living the Covenant” on March 4. Please register online at tinyurl.com/UUCregister. If you need childcare during this event, please advise the church office by Friday, January 27.

BLACK LIVES MATTER VIGIL Sundays, 10:45–11:10am We are continuing our Sunday morning street-side vigil in front of the church. We meet in the Memorial Garden at 10:45 a.m. and then move to the front sidewalk.

SCIENCE BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP Tuesdays, February 7 & 28, 7 p.m. in Alcott Because Valentine’s Day is on the second Tuesday, we will be meeting on the 1st and 4th Tuesdays this month. We are reading The Brain: A Very Short Introduction and will be initially focusing on chapters 3 and 4. We will decide at our meeting on February 7 if we want to spend an additional meeting (the 28th) on this book, or if we want to cover all the remaining chapters of this short, packed book this time. In any case, our next book, which we selected previously, will be Joseph LeDoux’s Anxious. The first four chapters of this book, from the Preface to page 112 will be up for review, whether we start in on it on February 28 or on March 7. Newcomers to the group are always welcome to sit in and listen to the discussion, and participate if they wish. ~David Beatty

QUANTUM PHYSICS AND SPIRITUALITY BOOK GROUP Wednesday, February 8, 1:30–3 p.m. in Howe The Quantum Physics and Spirituality Book Group seeks to understand the interconnected web of all existence, to independently search for truth and meaning, and to grow in spirituality through the discussion of books that speak to the commonality between quantum physics and spirituality. We seek to expand our understanding of the world both seen and unseen, both physical and mysterious with an open mind. We meet on the second Wednesday of the month. We are currently reading Field of Compassion: How the New Cosmology Is Transforming Spiritual Life by Judy Cannato and will be discussing pages 120–142 at this meeting. Our next book will be The Divine Matrix by Gregg Braden. Please contact Alicia Gardner if you plan to attend: (206) 729-5276 or [email protected].

MEN’S BREAKFAST Saturday, February 11, 9 a.m. to noon in Nathan Johnson Hall Our topic will be “Making Connections Outside Our Community In Coping With A Post-Trump World: How Do We Best Dialogue With Those Who Differ From Us?” The registration fee for this hot breakfast event will be $10, and scholarships are available. There are lots of ways that you can volunteer to help; please contact Mike Kippes at (425) 881-1014 or [email protected] with any questions.

CARING SHAWLS UUC’s Caring Shawls needlework group will meet Sunday, February 12 at 1:30 p.m. in the King room. Please join us if you would like to knit or crochet with others while we make shawls and baby blankets for UU parishioners who are going through a difficult time, or celebrating the addition of a new baby or child to their family. We will have basic instructions available, and have a limited supply of appropriate yarn and needles/hooks for these projects. We use washable yarn. Stop in to pick up yarn, or stay to enjoy two hours of lively discussion. We welcome needle workers of all ages, genders, and skill level.

STREAM OF LIGHT CLUSTER The Stream of Light cluster will meet on Saturday, February 18, 6 p.m., at the home of Meryl Thulean, 1300 University St., Apt. 10C. Please bring a dish/bottle to share.

ART ON DISPLAY February 19 through March 31 The UUC Art Committee’s next show will display works by Jerry Hogrewe and Kyoko Niikuni. The chapel will feature photography of Jerry Hogrewe. Living a life capturing the world through the lens of a camera has honed this artist’s eye to capture the moment that speaks most honestly and eloquently of the emotion apparent. In his words “images portray emotions of sadness, tranquility and happiness…that come from the artists’ soul and are presented in the final artwork.” The Gilmartin Gallery will show the work of Niikuni Kyoko, creating artwork in a traditional Japanese method using washi, a handmade Japanese paper. She has titled her show “Wild life of a flower,” her inspiration being the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. The artwork will be for sale, and a portion of each sale benefits UUC.

PACIFIC NW DISTRICT ASSEMBLY Saturday, February 25, Eugene, Oregon Unitarian Universalists from four states will be gathering at the beautiful new building of the UU Church in Eugene on February 25 for the Pacific Northwest District’s annual District Assembly. Meet Jim Key, Moderator of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), and learn about recent changes to congregational funding of our national association and regions. You’ll also hear from the three candidates running for President of the UUA—one will be elected by congregational delegates at General Assembly in New Orleans this June. You can participate in the Assembly Choir, learn from workshops focused on vital aspects of congregational life (including one presented by UUC’s own Susan Howlett), and engage in discussions about how our seven principles can help address our current political reality. Lunch is included on Saturday, and you’re warmly invited to stay for Sunday services at the Eugene church. Find out more and register by February 15 at pnwduua.org/district-assembly. Hope to see you there! If you plan to attend and are willing to serve as a voting delegate from UUC, please contact our Senior Minister, the Rev. Jon Luopa, as soon as possible.

CALL TO LAY LEADERSHIP AT UUC It is your involvement in the work and action of UUC that makes our Beloved Community. This is especially true of those who give to UUC in a lay leadership role—elected or not. Thank you! And at this moment of promise, on the heels of a momentous decision about our future, our elected leaders will play a key role in the way forward. The Leadership Development Committee (LDC) invites you to consider the opportunities of leadership roles at UUC. Although focusing recruitment on the roles for Board of Trustees and Leadership Development Committee, we will also help you consider the broad variety of experiences in which you can use your gifts and talents, as well as deepen your connection to this community. Look for opportunities over the next couple of months to listen, learn and consider your own involvement. We will be present during coffee hours, and will also be scheduling one or more information sessions. Whether you are simply curious, ‘ready now,’ or ‘maybe later,’ please signal your interest to us. Please contact: Sissy Peterman, LDC Chair, at [email protected] or Kathleen Cromp, LDC Member at [email protected].

SEABECK MULTI-AGE UU MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND RETREAT Friday–Monday, May 26–29, Seabeck Conference Center, Seabeck, WA

For more than 30 years, the East Shore and University Unitarian Churches have come together on Memorial Day for an all-ages weekend of fellowship at Seabeck Conference Center on Hood Canal. Part retreat and part social event, Seabeck puts a uniquely Unitarian Universalist spin on the American custom of “church camp,” providing three days of fun, friendship, relaxation, and revitalization for Unitarians of all ages. Bring the family, come solo, meet up with old friends and get acquainted with new ones. Programs and workshops for all ages are offered. During the weekend, an optional two-day workshop will be run

by Kiya Heartwood, an award-winning, internationally touring, roots/folk singer songwriter, composer and change artist. Her workshop, “The Music in Me,” will include explorations, exercises, experiments and just plain fun. Even if music isn’t the way you relate to the world you can participate through your passion—writing, visual art, movement—whatever calls to you. The first hour each day will be intergenerational and the last hour and a half will be for grown-ups. See the Seabeck webpage, esuc.org/news/seabeck, for more information on Kiya Heartwood and this year’s program. Stop by our table in Nathan Johnson Hall after the service on February 5 or 12 to see photos, ask questions, or share memories! Registration is on a first come-first served basis on the East Shore website at www.esuc.org. Contact Seabeck Registrar, Dianne Upton at [email protected] or 425-505-3744, with any registration questions. Contact this year’s Seabeck Dean, Jennifer Sill Reichert (UUC) at [email protected] with other questions about this year’s Seabeck weekend. We are very excited to welcome back former campers and to welcome new ones to the wonderful UU experience that is Seabeck!

WHEN WE CONTRIBUTE TO THE LIFE OF THIS COMMUNITY... When we make a financial pledge to our church, we suspect we are touching people’s lives and moving our mission forward, but we don’t know exactly who is being affected, and how. So here are examples of your pledge dollars at work:

• Carolyn and Keith started coming to UUC two years ago because they wanted their son Ian to have some spiritual grounding and social awareness from adults in addition to themselves. Keith says attending services has brought more music into their lives and more opportunities for meaningful service. “Singing together on Sundays brings us closer together, and I’ve gotten a lot out of participating in service projects with great organizations like Teen Feed and Vietnamese Friendship Association.”

• Carolyn is grateful for the weekly connection to spirit, for family discussions on topics spurred by UUC, and for opportunities for Ian to witness civil discourse and democratic group process in action as the capital campaign has unfolded.

• Ian’s religious education classes are opening his eyes to other faith traditions. “They’ve given me different ways to think about what God might be.”

All of these small but impactful things are available to their family—and yours—because you and others in our beloved community pledge your support. Thank you! ~ UUC Stewardship Team

PAGES FROM THE UUC BOOKSTORE When the congenial cacophony of coffee hour gets to be too much, the UUC Bookstore can serve as a respite region. Not only is the decibel level lower, but we have a wide selection of new and used books for all ages. A few highlights:

• Love Wins, an account of the Obergefell Supreme Court case that resulted in the legalization of same-sex marriage nationwide;

• Defying the Nazis, the story of Waitstill and Martha Sharp; and • All the Real Indians Died Off, which debunks many myths about the original

occupants of North America. In addition, we have books in stock for the Zen Buddhist class and Racial Justice group. The reading group and Adult RE class books now have their own shelves, to the left as you enter from Nathan Johnson Hall. Stop in and peruse!

STAFFING CHANGES FOR 2017: WELCOME FELIPE! After Beth Herrild’s departure in October from the position of Director of Congregational Life, Janine Larsen (Director of Ministries) and Byron Krystad (Director of Operations) worked on ideas for establishing a support team that reflected what Beth had learned during her tenure and what Janine and Byron hoped to achieve with their teams. The result was the creation of the position of Operations Coordinator, reporting to Byron, and the closing of the position of Director of Congregational Life. The Operations Coordinator position pulls together many responsibilities formerly held by Sharla Wipplinger and several from Byron’s plate to fill a full-time role central to “getting things done” at UUC. As a result, Sharla is freed up to focus on many of the membership duties that had been managed by the Director of Congregational Life.

A brief list of some of the responsibilities of the Operations Coordinator position includes: • Ensure that office operations provide a responsive and welcoming environment for members of the

congregation and the general public through email, phone calls, and in-person visits. • Provide key support for team of staff and volunteers facilitating temporary site move during construction

project. • Maintain and manage the facilities calendar for all program and group events, as well as rentals and

leases of building space. • Manage membership database software, facility scheduling software, and Office 365 document sharing

for staff and lay leaders. • Manage all vendor transactions and on-site service calls and deliveries. • Maintain policy and procedure documents for the church.

After advertising the job description on Idealist.org, WorkSourceWA, and elsewhere, Jon Luopa, Janine, Byron, and Pam Smith Mentz (a member of UUC’s Human Resources Committee) interviewed applicants in November and finally offered the position in in December to Felipe Vera, a newcomer to Seattle with a very interesting background and a great deal of excitement for this opportunity at UUC. Originally from Texas, Felipe holds a bachelor’s degree in Music Business from West Texas A&M, a master’s degree in Music Performance from Arizona State University, a master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix, and he has also completed doctoral work at The University of Texas at Austin. He has had a successful career as an educator and musician, and is looking forward to harnessing his passion for the arts and education to further the mission and vision of UUC. In his spare time, he enjoys being outdoors with his dog, Agador, and exploring the city.

Felipe is sitting at the center office desk and is working full time, Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (The UUC office hours have likewise been expanded to 5 p.m.) His email is [email protected] and his phone is 206-454-7710. Janine and Byron would especially like to thank Sharla Wipplinger and Susan St. John for their additional work and time this past fall to bridge the gap between Beth’s departure and Felipe’s hire, and thanks to the congregation for your patience during the transition to this solution. If you have any questions about this staffing change, please contact Janine ([email protected]) or Byron ([email protected]). And when you get a chance, please help welcome Felipe to UUC!

NOTE FROM THE CLIMATE ACTION TEAM The state legislative session has begun. Legislators must pass a biennial budget and, finally, figure out how they are going to fund public education, a “paramount duty” in the Washington State constitution. Will it be with new taxes (capital gains over a certain amount, B&O tax on services, closing loopholes)—supported by Democrats—or will it be by cutting state funding to existing programs such as social services (food, housing, health, etc.)—supported by Republicans? Governor Inslee has also proposed a carbon tax which would not only raise funds

but also help fight climate change. However, most of the legislators in Olympia are the same ones who blocked a carbon tax in last year’s session. UUC’s Climate Action Team supports a carbon tax that will not hurt low-income people (e.g., it’s offset by a reduction in other taxes and/or by a rebate of some kind). A carbon tax is the “least worst” option for those legislators who oppose new taxes but recognize that the McCleary court decision (on education funding) requires some changes in taxation. Please contact your senator and two representatives in Olympia with your opinion. If you know people outside of Seattle, please urge them to do so, too. The toll-free hotline number is 1-800-562-6000. Interfaith Advocacy Day is February 9.

RECEIVED IN THE UUC MAIL

31 Dec 2016 THANK YOU. As I researched opposition to HB-1011, I found your name on a list of WA churches and synagogues that opposed I-1515. I grew up in KS and frequently encountered Westboro Baptist Church protests. Your advocacy does so much to heal my heart. What you’re doing matters. Thank you, ~Kim R. (queer girl, trans ally)

CARE TEAM AND HELPING HANDS ASK “HOW CAN WE HELP YOU?” The Care Team serves people in the UUC community when they encounter illness, grief, medical events, and other life issues. We all need a little help sometimes. If you find yourself needing a listening ear or a little help, please email the Care Team at [email protected] or leave a message on our voicemail at 206) 454-7722. We are trained lay volunteers. We check for messages twice daily and keep your information confidential. Could you use an occasional meal or ride during a difficult time? If this is what you need, contact our Helping Hands crew through the Care Team email or phone (just above). We’ll forward your request to either our rides or our meals coordinator. Each maintains a list of willing and able volunteers. We also want to match drivers who could add a passenger (either occasionally or regularly) when driving to and from church. Please contact us if this is something you would like to do.

IN THE LARGER COMMUNITY

WEDGWOOD MEANINGFUL MOVIE Friday, February 10, 7 p.m. at Jubilee Hall, Our Lady of the Lake Church, 8900 35th Avenue NE Speciesism: The Movie (94 min, 2013)is an eye-opening, yet fresh take on the array of atrocities brought on by the factory farming industry. Most of the animals used for food in the United States are raised in giant, bizarre “factory farms,” hidden deep in remote areas of the countryside. In Speciesism: The Movie director Mark Devries set out to investigate these practices. The documentary takes viewers on a sometimes funny, sometimes frightening adventure, crawling through the bushes that hide these factories, flying in airplanes above their toxic “manure lagoons,” and coming face-to-face with their owners. With thought-provoking interviews Devries scored with everyone from Peter Singer to Bruce Friedrich to Richard Dawkins, Devries positions himself as the man on the street, looking up all the counter-arguments he could find on why humans use and abuse animals, and then asks the impressive roster of experts those questions. Today, prominent individuals and political activists have termed the assumption of human superiority speciesism. Speciesism: The Movie brings viewers face-to-face with the leaders of this movement, and, for the first time ever on film, fully examines the purpose of what they are setting out to do. After watching Speciesism: The Movie, you’ll never look at animals the same way again. Especially humans. See speciesismthemovie.com for more details. Please join us for the film’s showing. It’s FREE and open to the public! Donations to defray cost of screening rights gladly accepted. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Parking is available on NE 89th and NE 90th streets. The film begins at 7 p.m. with a facilitated community discussion to follow. More information at www.wedgwoodmeaningfulmovies.org. Sponsored by the Wedgwood Justice and Peace Coalition.
