Dr. G. S. Rawat is undoubtedly an exceptional personality who has many accolades to his name. In 2013, he was awarded by the “Hindustan Times” for his contribution in the eld of education, whereas, in the year 2014, he was awarded by International Association Of Lions Club for his supreme contribution in the education eld. Moreover, it was in the same year that he received the “Leadership Award”. To add on, he has worked as the Vice Principal and Principal at various schools. He has also been the Director at S.B. (P.G.) College Of Education, Vikasnagar, Uttarakhand. He holds 14 Master Degrees to his belt and want to break the Limca Book of Records. He is M.A in English Literature, History, Geography, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, Philosophy, Psychology, Education, Public Administration, Forensic Science and Criminology, Mass Communication & Journalism, MBA, LLB, MSC (Geology) and currently pursuing M.A in Anthropology from IGNOU.His utmost aim is not to collect the degrees but gather knowledge and experience. He is indeed proud to possess the largest individual library in Uttarakhand, having more than 14,000 books to his credit. The aim of Rawat’s IAS ACADEMY, Dehradun, is to help the aspirants to achieve success in competitive exams. According to Dr. Rawat, success in examination is not a matter of hard work alone, multiple Strategy and approach is to be adopted for qualifying the present system of competitive examination.
“What’s important is not how much you study but how you study. It is not the quantity of material and time but the quality which will count. An aspirant who is aspiring for higher grade like Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service, Indian Forest Service and Provincial Services should adopt the strategy of content analysis and process analysis for scoring higher grades. Cognitive, Affective and Conative abilities are prerequisite for qualifying in civil services. As you know that civil services exam is the mother of all examination, there is no single factor which determines success in civil service exam. It is a combination of various factors like patience, hard work, determination, self- condence, motivation, faith, parental support and to some extent luck. These are also the hallmark of success. It is my advice that IAS aspirants should undergo career counseling. This is vital for their SWOT (Strength, weakness, opportunity and threats) analysis. Thus, the apt guidance, a reasonable level of intelligence (both IQ and EQ), proper planning, time management and long term preparation will go a long way in qualifying for civil services exam.”To name a few of the ex- students of RAWAT IAS ACADEMY, who today are working in different capacities in different states of India are – MangeshGhildiyal, Neelima Shah, AshishTripathi, Rajpria Singh, VandanaKumari, Ashish Kumar, Trishna Bhatt, Lt. Col. RuchikaThapliyal, Major Ar t iRawat , Capta in RuchiAggarwal , Lt . KanikaKukreti, Payal Gupta and so on.Apart from Dr. Rawat’s unsurpassed educational experience, it’s an honor to know that he is an astounding mountaineer and trekker and till date has been a leader of more than 35 high altitude treks in J&K, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. His versatility can clearly be noticed by his grand success of “GENIUS OF UTTARAKHAND”- 12 episode DoordarshanProgramme , directed and produced under his guidance, already broadcasted in 2011. Presently, he is working on 24 Episodes TV Serial,”The Himalayan Glaciers”, yet to be telecasted in Doordarshan. Meanwhile, he is also working on two Telelms based on Mountaineering and Mountaineers and has also directed and produced “Women Versus Wild” for which he chose Ladakh as the location for his shoot. So, if your aim is to crack the civil services exam, Dr. G.S. Rawat “The Real Guru” is indeed the guiding star to look upto.

Everyone dreams to become successful but there are very few who actually chase their dreams and turn them into reality. One such person is Prashil Rawat, a young and dynamic boy of 22 from Dehradun who has proven that age is never a barrier to achieve what you strongly desire. With his strong determination, clear vision, hard work and smart management skills, today, he is the Managing Director of the JSR Group, along with his elder brother Tarun Rawat, where his father, Jaswant Singh Rawat is the Chairman.
He believes that positive action combined with positive thinking is the key to success. The difference between who you are and what you want to be is what you do and this exactly what Prashil believes in. Under the brand’s umbrella, he has launched Hotel JSR Continental, JSR Farms, Hotel JSR Inn along
with the Cocco- Rico Restaurant.
The trio blends each other extremely well and believes that one should always do what the heart says and there is no short-cut to success. T h e b e s t p a r t a b o u t t h e m i s t h e i r harmonization, their vision, their future prospects and their absolute efforts to be the best in their industry and to make the state proud and upgraded.
All his ventures offer the best quality and services, keeping in mind the apt hospitality standards and comfort of the guests. It is highly commendable that Prashil has been able to make his own mark by taking his brand to a different periphery at an international level as well. It is he who made the entire state proud by receiving the Asia- Pacic Globe Platinum Awards 2016 in Hong Kong for being the young and the best Hotelier of Uttarakhand.
All his properties are very well furnished, fully equipped with all amenities, well designed suites, comprising of food and beverage outlets, tness centres and recreational zones with full on high level entertaining rock shows happening almost every month. His ‘JSR

FARM’ is loaded with 10,000 sqft pillar less banquet hall which can gather upto 4000 to 6000 people with its green carpet lawn which is upto 50,000 sqft in size and has a parking capacity of 300 vehicles.
Despite being successful at such a young age, Prashil has always been grounded and feels pride in being a Garhwali Rajput and to have born in the ‘Devbhoomi’ Uttarakhand. His future prospects involve launching his own production house as well.Furthermore, the collaboration of JSR with SANSKRITI popularly known as JSR SANSKRITI, produces ayurvedic medicines straight from Kerela which are 100% safe and approved by FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) in order to serve
the customers with perfect guide lines in providing herbal supplements which helps in improving the health related issues.
As per Prashil, until you value yourself, you won’t value your time. Until you value your time, you will not do anything with it. So, time management is very essential and whatever target one has set, it should be accomplished step by step with strong vision and double the actions. One should always move ahead with proper planning, with the clear vision in mind so as to achieve whatever one has dreamt of and should not forget that Success is not the key to happiness but happiness is the key to success. Thus, being happy and spreading happiness is something which everyone should practice.

With the advent of time as we grow older, we sense a lot of changes within ourselves; change in the way we think, variations in our thought process, change in our attitude and behavior, transformation in our likes and dislikes,
transmutation in our mental level, change in our thoughts and personality, mutation in our level of understanding and such changes frequently keep taking place, often making us feel confused, gloomy, disheartened, depressed and such uctuations and mood swings at times really become difcult to comprehendand to admit by the sufferers. But, repetitive behavioral changes should not be ignored and to throw light upon the very common problem of depression, gloominess, loss of focus, loss in appetite, lonely and sad behavior, our expert Dr. MeghaLuthra, Professor, Community Medicine SGRRIM&HS, Dehradun Associate Editor, Indian Journal of Community Health, Member IMA(Dehradun Branch), IAPSM, IPHA , has a lot to share with us.THE EXCERPTS OF THE INTERVIEW ARE AS FOLLOWS:UH–What is 'Depression' and what are its symptoms?Dr. Megha- Well, a disease in which there is persistent sadness and a loss of interest in activities that patient normally enjoys, with inability to carry out daily activities, for at least two weeks is commonly understood as Depression, where people usually have one or more of the following symptoms:loss of energy, change in appetite, sleeping more or less, anxiety, reduced concentration, indecisiveness, restlessness, feelings of worthlessness, guilt or hopelessness, in fact even the thoughts of self-harm or suicide.UH–Which age group is generally the victim of this disease? And what's the global ratio of such sufferers?Dr. Megha–If we talk about the global level, more than 300 million people are estimated to suffer from depression amounting to 4.3% of the world's populationaffecting people of all ages and from all socio-economic strata. Globally, depression is most common in the age group of 60-64 years in females as well as males. As per the Global Burden of Disease Study 2015, prevalence of depression by percentage of population in African Region and Region of the Americas far exceeds the world average of 4.4%. Basically, the risk of disease is increased by unemployment, poverty, life events such as relationship break-up or death of a loved one, physical illness and problems caused by substanceabuse. Furthermore, Global suicide rate in males (13/100,000 population) by far exceeds that in females (4/100,000 population). These rates are higher in high-income countries as compared to low and middle-income countries.UH- As there are numerous tensions in one's life, so is being unhappy also a sign of depression?Dr. Megha- Oh yes, certainly but if it prevails for long. Well, there are two main Sub- categories of Depression namely Major Depressive Disorder/ Depressive Episode, where one often has a depressed mood, decreased energy and loss of interest and enjoyment which can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the number and severity of symptoms, whereas, the other is Dysthymia, which is a form of mild depression
andis persistent. Although the symptoms are similar to the depressive episode yet they tend to be less intense and last longer.UH- What is your take regarding this ailment as far as the Indian scenario is concerned?Dr. Megha- In India a total of 56,675,969 cases of depression have been identied by WHO with a prevalence of 4.5% of the population. In India joint family system support continues to absorb many ill effects of disease and provides stable environments for shaping and developing life styles and personality traits. This support is gradually diminishing due to urbanization and industrialization and migration of young people to urban areas.UH- Many patients seem shirking from seeing the doctor and discussing about their problem of depression. What are your views regarding this?Dr. Megha- Well, I believe that the doctors exist to cure diseases. Even if it's a mild depression, one should never shirk from seeing the doctor timely. After all, mental health is the state which everyone wants to possess.Mental health has been recognized as a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully and is able to make a contribution to his or her community. Moreover, I think due to widespread social stigma and social discrimination;people do not even disclose the disease to the near and dear ones until they become unmanageable. Existing mental health services are decient in India- less than one psychiatrist is available for every 3 lakh population in India and 1 per million in rural areas. There is poor utilization of available services for mental disorders- nearly 66% of patients diagnosed with mental health problems donot seek help from health professionals. UH- What are the future prospects for mental health in India and your message to our readers.Dr. Megha–Actually, the future prospects for mental health look bright in India if we pursue the international program to stimulate mother-child interaction as a means of personality development of young children. Adolescent boys and girls who are the future parents need greater degree of mental health services to develop value based learning and balanced personality.“New pathways of Hope” have opened up with the launch of National Mental health Policy in October 2014. The vision of this policy is to promote mental health; prevent mental illness; enable recovery from mental illness; reduce stigma and segregation; and ensure socio economic inclusion of persons affected by mental illness. All this shall be achieved by providing accessible, affordable, quality health and social care to all persons through their life span within a right based framework. As far as my message is concerned, I would like to say that if you want your life to be smooth, happy, easy-going, it solely rests upon you. Problems, tensions are common, which keeps on increasing with the advancement of time. This is the life you have; make the best use of it. A beautiful life just does not happen. It is built daily by prayer, humility, sacrice and hard work.

Later on, I was IG Kumaon and then nally in July 2017 I had the honor of becoming the DGP of Uttarakhand. UH- How do you feel shouldering the responsibility as the DGP of Uttarakhand?DGP- I enjoy shouldering the responsibility of DGP as you are the custodian of law and you are the person who is the in-charge of the force of around 30,000 people who looks after the security of more than 1.2 crore people of the state and also another 3 to 4 crore of visitors who come every year and apart from that the internal security aspect of the country which is very sensitive. UH- What is your view regarding our Uttarakhand Police?DGP- Well, we are reasonably equipped force as compared to the other states and of course there is an immense scope of improvement by way of training and induction of technology and most importantly by way of behavior towards the people. The ofcers are attuned towards public and are very much sensitized and they handle the issues pretty well. UH- The capital city possesses extremely porous borders, where people from adjoining districts and other states creep in and give rise to criminal activities. How do you look at this scenario?DGP- Well, any commercial place, or the city worth its name or any state or any resort or destination will have people coming from abroad and other places. But the ip side is that unwanted people, criminals also creep in but being the police organization we keep a close check for which we have surveillance

The law of the land is there and we are trained to enforce that.UH- What is your outlook regarding corruption as far as Police is concerned?DGP- As far as the corruption is concerned, the image of the police is something which requires a tremendous make over as it is one of the common perceptions. Actually 'Behavior' and 'Corruption' are the two biggest challenges which the police face. So, we need to bring in transparency for that we are trying to train them, motivate them and also trying to bring gadgets which make interface or human discretion very limited. This is a serious problem and through t h i s p l a t f o r m o f U T TA R A K H A N D HERITAGE, I request the public to kindly follow the trafc rules properly and do not allow your kids below 18 years to drive. After all, all these rules are meant for our own safety. UH- What's your notion about the essence of people of Uttarakhand? DGP- Uttarakhand is basically mountainous apart from the plains we have but the essence is of the people who have lived in the mountains for centuries, who have very high character, who have high integrity, the values of humanity and truth, of hard work, of withstanding adversity all such values are there and moreover, people here are peaceful and law abiding and generally non-violent and have a very high human content so that being the case now we have to ensure that the basic character of the place remains the same and the w i n d s o f c h a i n t h a t c o m e s w i t h communication with the developing economy, the essence of the place does not change and t h e p o l i c i n g h a s t o b e d o n e w h i l e
understanding the social milieu. Furthermore, both, the public as well as the police needs to be more supportive. We can't be a one way affair but the lead has to be taken by the police. Police has to make efforts to cross this chasm if there is any between the two. UH- How far has your family support, helped you in the increasing graph of your success and what's your success 'mantra'?DGP- Well, I am very fortunate and God has been very kind. My family has always been very supportive. When I was a kid, my parents supported me a lot, later on my wife and my kids as well. Fortunately, they have the same values which I have. There is no conict whatsoever and that has been a great help. As far as my success mantra is concerned, I have a lways t r ied to work hard , be straightforward and as uncomplicated as possible and as less dependent on luxury as possible and as disciplined and hard working, be it the mental energy or the physical energy; you really need to work hard on both the aspects. If you are stingy on your mental or physical energy, it will not grow. The more you use it, the more it will increase and the more you will be physically and mentally alert and t and the less you be dependent on luxury, the better. Of course, you need a basic civilized life, but beyond a threshold, if you go for luxurious type of life then you will be dependent and you will be a weak human being, so just avoid that.UH- Last but not the least, your message to the public.DGP- Uttarakhand is generally known as 'Devbhoomi', which actually has an in-depth meaning. I feel it is so called as the society here is wonderful because of its basic sterling qualities and values, which need to be preserved and this is why it is such a beautiful place due to which, people from the rest of the world are trying to settle down here. There is hardly anyone who comes here and doesn't wish to settle down. This is a great compliment to this society. Thus, we should be proud that we belong to such an incredible state where when the rest of the world is changing for the worst, we are progressing for the best.

Uttarakhand is generally referred to as the Devbhoomi "Land of the Gods" due to many Hindu Temples and pilgrimage centers found throughout the state. Culture makes people understand each other better and if they understand each other better in their soul, it becomes easy for every individual to be happy. As the time is advancing, I personally feel that preservation of culture is must, where it does not require contempt or disrespect for other cultures, the point is that we need to preserve our culture and we must continue doing it. Talking about the festivals of Uttarakhand, we all know how colorful and distinctive they are with the blend of various social and cultural factors. The love for color and joyous celebrations of the people of Uttarakhand is well reected by the elaborate rituals. Our Folk and tradition are also unmatched. Some of the popular folk songs are `Mandals`, `Panwaras` and Somber `Khuded`, `Thadya` and `Jhoda`.These folk songs are composed on the beats and nodes of Dhol, Damoun, Turri, Ransingha, Dholki, Daur, Thali, Bhankora and Masakbhaja.Although with the upcoming advancement in science and technology, the music in Uttarakhand has also gained a lot of changes over the years. It’s really great to know that lately people have become more aware of our culture. Though Uttarakhand has become a global village that has its own inuence yet I feel that there is certainly the need of spreading awareness about our culture especially amongst the youth. Well, culture develops by the adjustment with the nature. We are being inuenced by the other cultures as well as we all are traveling and knowing different things. I believe that written words speak volume and helps in spreading awareness, thus, such an initiative of this magazine is appreciated where not only school students, college students, youth will nd themselves connected but also the public at large as this is an apt platform where through the varied informative and conversant columns, the essence of Uttarakhand can be felt and the ones doing extremely well also get recognition. We are extremely proud of our artists, as many of them namely, Pritam Bhartwan, Narendra Negi, Sangeeta Dhondiyal have been successful in taking our culture to the national as well as international level. Moreover, different cultural groups from various countries are also welcome to showcase their culture so as to form strong intercultural communication and blend. Apart from this, we keep conducting workshops in typical ‘Guru-Shishya’ parampara. We are running an institute called ITS TUTORIALS, which is known for producing toppers since past many years. having criminal minds and full of condence, overall good in all the spheres of life. Moreover, I think, this magazine would be a great platform to reach out to the public at large at the state level through which right messages , information could be disseminated making the readers really ponder over and understand where we are at present and where could we be and how exactly should we be in order to achieve our goals. As we all know that in the remote areas, the level of education is not rened be it the infrastructure or the teachers, but I believe that this magazine would denitely be able to reach out even to those. My message to the present youth is none other than, “Hard work always pays.” There is no short cut to success. One really has to work hard to achieve one’s goal thus, it took 27 years for me to reach here. My strategy to success is to be honest to yourself. Don’twork for money, money follows you. We often see the students stressing themselves especially the science stream students, I just want to tell them that there is no point in over stressing oneself. One should follow the PH theory that is the “Productive Hour” Theory, where we just need to nd two – three productive hours every day, where one can do self- study. Actually what’s happening is that students are running here and there for tuitions and by the end of the day, they are being completely drained out. Thus, one should take out some time for self-study, to understand one’s own depth. Students should enjoy but they should take out lucrative time for the studies too. Furthermore, parenting plays a vital role in everyone’s life. My message to all the parents is that they need to be very good observers of their kid’s talentrather than
focusing on their results and failing to observe their child growing up. This process of observance starts at a very young age, where the parents should watch their kid’s actions very minutely, the talent of their kids, their area of interest and most of all the liberty of choosing their own choice of Stream when they grow up. Parents should only assist their children in m a k i n g d e c i s i o n s r a t h e r t h a n imposing.Regarding the current quality of Education, I want to say that the quality of teaching is going down. The monetary aspects have shaken the education system where many schools are seen hiring teachers in less salary and thus are seen compromising on the quality. Many schools today are just Business enterprises and nothing else.Talking about success, I believe that we need to keep on taking opportunities. Once we have succeeded at rst, we will nd that more and more success comes our way. It is essential to appreciate our successes and also to celebrate the successes of others. In case, one doesn’t nd success initially, one should keep on trying by delivering more than before. Stay positive and condent and you will nd that sooner or later, you will begin to succeed with time.At last, I would like to say that nothing succeeds like success and this magazine is a great initiative altogether and I would love to contribute my articles, features, poems, write ups to this magazine in order to get connected to you all. After all, education helps the child realize his potentialities and as Indira Gandhi has said “Education is a continuous process from the minute we are born until we die”, I rmly believe that through this mode of communication, we all can certainly be roped together.

I belong to Dehradun and I love this place for its natural beauty.Over the years, Doon has become an education hub and it’s this place which has produced many army personnel, teachers, doctors, engineers, scientists and so on, who are serving in different parts of the world and we feel proud to have contributed in this success story of Doon since years.I started teaching in the year 1990. This is my 28th year of teaching.I have taught in various schools in Dehradun and have been teaching Physics , Chemistry and Mathematics to classes 9 and 10th and Mathematics up toclass 12. We are running an institute called ITS TUTORIALS, which is known for producing toppers since past many years. We are known for our dedication, honesty, and the hard work, which we instill into the students. I am M.Sc Electronics with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and Honors Diploma in Computers from APTECH. I have been instrumental in St. Joseph School holding
Science Exhibitions and making Central Projects on a very large scale. One of my favorite projects was how to connect the Rivers of Uttarakhandand India so that the situations like Flood, which are very rampant and common now, could be controlled. It was well appreciated and well I was also the rst one to initiate theidea of how to make y overs in Dehradun. The next project I was about to make was on PODS, which are mass transport and transit system. I have always engaged students to work like a community, not only in studies but also in social work by donating things, belongings, fruits, clothes etc. I have always asked them to s h a r e t h e i r h a p p i n e s s w i t h t h e underprivileged and less privileged ones.My stay at ST. Jospeh’s Academy is a very memorable stay as I was the in-charge of m a n y a c t i v i t i e s t h e r e a n d n o w successfully running my institute. I have written 6 books till now which are very popular among the students. The latest one that has come few days back is “Know your Chemistry”. I am still writing a few more and I want to continue. My future plans are to open up a school for the youngsters as I feel that the root education needs to be corrected at a very early stage and as we compare our education system with the western, the kind of habits they instill into the kids at a very young age is not here in India that is why we see elders breaking laws. So, we want to develop a different sort of school where the young minds will be nurtured in such a way that they would be instilled with all the moralities, ethics and scruples, leading to good citizens abiding by the rules, respecting women, not
