The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 in a historic move that brings together the resources and assets of UT Brownsville and UT Pan American and, for the first time, makes it possible for residents of the Rio Grande Valley to benefit from the Permanent University Fund, a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and the Texas A&M University System.

Our new university will also be home to a School of Medicine, and will transform Texas and the nation by becoming a leader in student success, teaching, research, and health care. UTRGV will enroll its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine will open in 2016.

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley will provide an outstanding education to the students of the region, the state, the country and the world. This education will be of the highest quality; it will be affordable, accessible, and innovative. The new university will transform Texas, and the nation, by becoming a leader in student success, teaching, research, and healthcare.

RIO GRANDE VALLEY The Rio Grande Valley (RGV) is located at the southernmost tip of South Texas. It lies along the northern bank of the Rio Grande, and extends for a distance of approximately 100 miles. The RGV is also called El Valle, the spanish translation of “the valley”, and ocassionally referred to as “El Magico Valle del Rio Grande” (“The Magical Valley of the Rio Grande”).

In 1836 Texas won its independence from Spain in 1821, and the RGV was disputed territory between Mexico and Texas. Texas claimed that the border with Mexico was at the Rio Grande River, whereas Mexico claimed that the border was at the Nueces River. This dispute was finally resolved in 1848 at the end of the US - Mexican War, with Texas being awarded the territory that is now the Rio Grande Valley.

The Rio Grande Valley of South Texas encompasses several landmarks that attracts tourists, and is primarily known for South Padre Island. Including other popular destinations such as Port Isabel Lighthouse, Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, and Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park.
