Rabbis MessagePassover Appeal
From the beloved musical Fiddler on the Roof. . . .
Nochum the Beggar: Alms for the poor, alms for the poor. . . .
A Villager: Here, Reb Nochum, heres one kopek.Nochum: One kopek? Last week you gave me two kopeks!Villager: I had a bad week.Nochum: So if you had a bad week, why should I suffer?
A bit of comic relief in this delightful show, but also a glimpse into the Jewish mind.Tzedakah the pursuit of justice through charity is the cornerstone of our exis-tence as a people, in good times and in bad.
For our country, and indeed, for the global community, it has been more than just a bad week. The downturnin our economy has affected virtually all of us in one way or another, both as individuals and in our affiliations
with various institutions, whether schools or universities, religious congregations or corporate enterprises. Weadd our prayers to those of so many of our fellow Americans that the stimulus will help, even at this early andprecarious stage in the process.
All this raises an important question for us as Jews. If we are hurting financially ourselves, are we still obli-gated to give tzedakah charity? The response of our tradition would be unequivocally yes. Obviously, wecannot give what we do not have. Our tradition has never encouraged us to give up ALL of our resources, andvows of poverty are not part of mainstream Jewish practice. Nevertheless, if we do have the wherewithal tocontinue contributing on some level to charitable causes, as is the responsibility of every Jew, then we cannotafford to desist from it. On the contrary. Particularly at this time of need all around us, we have the responsi-bility to do what we can to help those in need.
This is particularly true at this time of year as we begin to anticipate our celebration of the Passover holiday.Though its pretty cold out as I write this message, the reality is that Passover is not far away at all, and manyof us already have begun to plan for our seders. Every year the New York Board of Rabbis and the FederationJoint Passover Association conduct an Annual Passover Appeal to enable our fellow New Yorkers in need intheir celebration of this holiday. Funds from the Appeal go to the purchase ofmatzotand other types of Pass-over food and supplies for literally thousands of our fellow Jews in the area, mostly elderly, indigent, alone orinstitutionalized, who do not have the resources to provide for themselves.
Every year I have been overwhelmed at the kindness of our congregation in responding to this Annual Pass-over Appeal. It is a privilege for me to participate with you in contributing to the efforts of the NYBR and
Federation in this mitzvah. Particularly during this stressful time, I now ask you once again to contribute tothis Appeal. Please make out a check for whatever amount is comfortable for you to Union Temple ofBrooklyn, and earmark it on the bottom Passover Appeal. Send it to the temple at 17 Eastern Park-
way, Brooklyn, NY 11238, and we will issue a collective check to those conducting the Appeal.
On behalf of my colleagues at the New York Board of Rabbis and our friends at Federation, I offer my heart-felt thanks.

It's March, with its promise of spring, and Sisterhoodhas two exciting programs to welcome the season. First,on Sunday, March 15th, at 10 AM, we are joiningwith the Social Action Committee to present a stimulat-
ing observance of Women's History Month. Ourspeaker will be Dottie Miller Zellner, one of the braveJewish women who in the 1960s played a dangerousand pivotal role in the Civil Rights movement in theSouth. If you were there with us in January for ourlively discussion ofGoing South: Jewish Women in theCivil Rights Movement by Deborah L. Shultz, youwon't want to miss Ms. Zellner's revealing, inside storyof the vital part she and other young Jewish womenplayed in the making of history. If you weren't with usin January, don't miss out on this chance to catch up.
Two weeks later, on Sunday, March 29th, at 10 AM,Sisterhood has a special treat for youour PassoverPotluck. Come join us as we celebrate the coming holi-day by viewing the hamish, heartwarming DVD TheGefilte Fish Chronicles. It's the unforgettable story ofthe Dubroff family's 100 years of sharing the Seder, complete with mouth-watering recipes. You'll laugh,
you'll cry, you'll reminisceand you'll work up an ap-petite. So bring your favorite Passover dish, along withits recipeor just bring yourself and your memories.Just like the delightful Dubroff family, we'll munch on
holiday delicacies and share our thoughts about Pass-overs past, present, and to come. We'll also be rafflingoffThe Gefilte Fish Chronicles cookbook, soyou maybe the lucky one to leave with the recipes for some newtreats for your family's seder.
Sisterhood thanks Mary Ellen Kramer and Gayle Solo-mon for telling us about the important work of theDarfur Peace & Development Organization at ourJanuary program. Through its Women's Center andSolar Cooker Program, it helps victims of genocide tobecome independent women, and through its SchoolsProgram it helps their children to get an education. Wesupport these fine programs, and we hope you willtoo. For more information, and to find out how yourdonations can help, please contact Gayle Solomon [email protected].

Religious School Planting the Seeds of the Future
Brotherhood Partisans and Pirates
Last month we celebrated Tu BiShevat with a crea-tive seder. The idea of a sederon the fifteenth day ofthe month of Shevat was developed in Safed, a town
in northern Israel, and was inspired by Rabbi IsaacLuria and his mystical teachings.
This seder is an opportunity to experience creativerituals. We used a version developed by BabagaNewz;a wonderful magazine and online resource for elemen-tary and middle school students, and their parents andteachers.
The Tu BiShevat seder engages us in the study ofkabbalistic conceptions of the world, environmentalissues, and our relationship to Israel. Our seder used
the different types of fruits as metaphors. For exam-ple, the fruits with one large pit, such as dates andavocados, were compared to singular heroes of ourpeople like Theodor Herzl. The fruits with many smallseeds represented the many small actions we can taketo make the world a better place.
The children helped lead the seder , drew pictures ofthe shivat haminim, the seven types of fruits andgrains associated with Israel mentioned in the Torah(Deut.8:8), lead us in brachot, and thoroughly enjoyed
planting candy, raisins, nuts and seeds in our groundOreo dirt, watered with chocolate syrup and servedfor dessert!
The parents briefly discussed their personal feelingsabout Israel. We looked at quotes from A Dream ofZion: American Jews Reflect on Why Israel Matters to
Them, edited by Jeffrey Salkin, and we reflected uponsome of the different ways to relate to Israel: ances-tral home , place of refuge, part of Judaism, an exam-ple to the world. The group had a wide range of feel-ings and opinions and we had the chance to begin aconversation about the complex relationship of Ameri-can Jews to Israel.
This month we will be celebrating Purim in the Reli-gious School with a carnival on March 8th. OnMarch 21
stour first-, second-,and third-grade students
will participate in the leading of Shabbat morning ser-vices. I would also like to commend our students fortheir interest in the Darfur Schools Program , and theircommitment to contribute tzedakah to support theschools in North Darfur.

Our February meeting featured Joshua Waletzky showing and discussing his film Parti-sans of Vilna. Im happy to say that it was very well-attended. Both the film and thequestion-and-answer session afterward provided a well-researched and fascinating lookat one of the best examples of organized Jewish resistance to the Nazis, as well as theways that other Vilna Jews living through the Holocaust coped and responded. Wethank Andy Mirer for making the arrangements for Partisans of Vilna.
The Brotherhood Shabbat service and luncheon will be on March 14th
. Erez Mirer and Iwill each be chanting part of the Torah reading, Ki Tissa (the Golden Calf). Watch formy emails, and let me know what part you would like to have in the service. I hope thatyou all can attend and participate, as it is always one of the most meaningful and enjoy-able events in the Brotherhoods year.
Our next Brotherhood book discussion, on April 26th, will be about Edward Kritzlers new bookJewish Pi-rates of the Caribbean. Look for the book, and come and hear about this amazing and little known part of ourhistory.

During the month of February at the height of the win-ter our preschoolers focused on trees as we preparedfor our annual Tu BiShevat celebration with RabbiGoodman.
The Hummingbirds, our four year olds, made tree col-lages to celebrate Tu Bi'Shevat. They also readSammy the Spider's First Tu Bi'Shevatand A Tree IsNice. They discussed why it is important for the earthto have trees and that water and sunlight are needed tomake trees grow. The children noted how treeschange throughout the seasons. They spoke about thedifferent fruits and nuts that grow on trees and howsquirrels like to gather nuts to help them through thewinter.
The Robins (three year olds) created a Tu BiShevat
group mural with lots of light green leaves starting tobud and grow on a tree trunk. They also talked aboutthe fact that Tu BiShevatis the "birthday of the trees"in Israel. We read The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein.
The Swallows, our afternoon threes class, did individ-ual pictures with tree shapes, leaves and colorful"buds" bursting open.
The Sparrows (three year olds) sang Music for Aard-varks' , Big Old Tree. The song incorporates wordsand movements, and the kids all loved it. We also read
The Carrot Seed by Ruth Kraus and at circle timetalked about what types of foods grow on trees .
The Chickadees (two year olds) read A Tree Is Niceand then added watercolors to bare trees that had beendrawn with chalk. They displayed these lovely treesoutside their classroom.
On Monday, February 9th we all gathered in the bigroom to celebrate the birthday of trees with RabbiGoodman. We talked about how there are differentkinds of fruit; fruit with a pit, fruit with a peel andfruit that is entirely edible. We sang and danced asRabbi Goodman beat on a tof(drum).

Suggested Readings: Elie Wiesel, Souls on Fire: Portraits and Leg-ends of Hasidic Masters; Arthur Green, Tormented Master: A Lifeof Rabbi Nahman of Bratslav
Guest Instructor: Mishael Zion
Mishael Zion is a Faculty Fellow at the SkirballCenter for Adult Jewish Learning at Temple
Emanu-El in New York and a student at YeshivatChovevei Torah Rabbinic School. Mishael was born andraised in Jerusalem, where he served on the faculties of theShalom Hartman Institute and the Pardes Institute of JewishStudies. Together with his father, Noam Zion, he co-authoredHaLaila Hazeh: Haggadah Yisraelit (2004), a best-selling
Israeli Haggadah, and of A Night to Remember: The Hag-gadah of Contemporary Voices (2007).
Coffee and dessert will be served.
One of the most remarkable Hasidic teachers, Reb Nachmancontinues to excite and challenge our hearts and minds even 200years after his death. Who is this rabbi who ignites the imagina-tion of dancing Hasidim and philosophers alike? Well study histeachings, tell his stories, sing his niggunim and recount his lifestory, trying to discover what it is about his message that reso-nates so strongly in others and in ourselves.
