AfgHAnisTAn: BeHind THe lens UTAS journalism lecturer John Martinkus travelled to Afghanistan in 2011 as the Australian War Memorial’s Official Australian War Cinematographer. John takes us behind the lens of one of his recently released documentaries detailing the complexities of Australian operations in Afghanistan.

fAiR meAns OR fOulPeter Newlinds from ABC Radio Sport’s Grandstand program joins UTAS academics Prof Catherine Palmer (School of Social Sciences) and Dr David Coady (School of Humanities) to challenge our ideas of sportsmanship and fair play. Prof Palmer has written extensively on the Tour de France, while Dr Coady’s research focuses on fair play in cricket.

culTuRAl sTORiesThe UTAS Community Friends and Network Programme (CFNP) South will run the UTAS Human Library this Open Day. Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) UTAS students will be sharing their stories about their homes and cultural experiences. Aiming to bring students together to strengthen social inclusion and reduce isolation, the Human Library is a simple yet powerful strategy for students to build social connections within the local community.

sHAun glAdwell: AfgHAnisTAn The Academy Gallery is delighted to partner with the Australian War Memorial in presenting Shaun Gladwell: Afghanistan.

Video Artist Shaun Gladwell travelled to Afghanistan as the Australian War Memorial’s official war artist in October 2009.

Gladwell’s contemplative yet beguiling videos focus on the bodies and movement of everyday soldiers, and the way they are trained to observe and quickly respond to foreign environments. The exhibition will also display a series of photographs and paintings. Gladwell creates experimental portraits that explore the training and customs soldiers bring with them to international combat zones.

Exhibition dates: 11 July to 13 September.

BOOmeRAng scienceThe Tasmanian Science Talent Search is a competition open to all Tasmanian school students. As part of the Technology Challenge, students will be judged on their completed entry which was to “design, make and evaluate a returning boomerang and a hunting boomerang.” They’ll test out their boomerangs for distance travelled and accuracy at this regional public judging session. You can also check out students’ latest working inventions that illustrate possible practical solutions for everyday problems.

The Theatre Program includes study in the areas of technical theatre, production and performance. sHAun glAdwell: AfgHAnisTAnVideo Artist Shaun Gladwell travelled to Afghanistan as the Australian War Memorial’s official war artist in October 2009. Come and explore his experimental works of photographs and paintings.

On THe TRAil Of gengHis KHAn – Tim cOpeOur special guest speaker is writer, filmmaker and adventurer, Tim Cope from Gippsland, Victoria.

Tim Cope was National Geographic Adventure Honoree 2007, Australian Adventurer of the Year 2006 – just 30 years old, Tim is pursuing a life of adventure, writing, and film.

Tim speaks fluent Russian, and guides in Antarctica, Siberia, and Mongolia, has spent around five years travelling in regions of Russia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, and Ukraine by bicycle, row boat, skis, horse, camel and many other means.

Tim will share his personal discoveries of getting to know people in their unique home environments and traveling in traditional and local ways. Gain insight into his popular six part ABC TV Series: ‘The Trail of Genghis Khan.’

And look out for ‘On The Trail of Genghis Khan: An Epic Journey Through the Land of the Nomads’ to be released by Bloomsbury Worldwide August 2013.
