PRESIDENT’S REPORT . . .

It is my privilege as immediate past president of the Utah Tennis Association to give my final report on the state of the Utah Tennis Association. While there have been a number of current

issues requiring action by the Utah Tennis Association board, staff and volunteers, I am happy to report that no major changes in procedure have occurred and our normal operating practices have continued throughout the year. I believe that the Utah Tennis Association is in extremely good financial condition with an excellent board and superior staff.

The Utah Tennis Association set new milestones in 2010 with overall adult participation up 9.7 percent. The USTA Summer league had more players and teams than ever before in the history of the Utah Tennis Association adult league program. In 2010, the UTA offered as a pilot

program the first 10 & Under junior team tennis league. This was done in cooperation with Coach Mike’s Tennis Academy and included six teams with a total of 30 youth participants. This program used the new QuickStart play format using low compression balls. All matches were

played on the downsized 60 foot courts. Due to the success of this program it will again be offered in the winter at Salt Lake Swimming & Tennis Club. Membership in the UTA decreased slightly in 2010. However, our overall membership over the

past ten years has increased by almost 20 percent. We continued our junior fundraiser and the UTA was able to raise over $13,800 this year, an increase of $2,000 over last year. This is particularly significant because we lowered the price of ticket donation.

An integral part of our organization is our working committees. In 2010 these committees have truly been (working) and all have made major contributions to the organization this past year, especially the administrative committee. These committees have assisted in preparing workable

goals, duties and responsibilities, which should help the overall operation of the UTA in the future. Several teams from Utah advanced to National Championships with a victorious Men’s 2.5 Team

from Salt Lake Swimming & Tennis Club winning the National Championship. Utah teams continue to be competitive and the UTA wishes to thank all team captains and participants. I personally would like to thank the many volunteers who handled grassroots duties and make the

UTA programs successful. These individuals devote time and energy often without any acknowledgment. The staff at the Utah Tennis Association is superior and I believe it is one of the best functioning operations in the entire United States. Our staff includes: Linda Vincent Executive Director; Jill Bruderer, Adult League Coordinator; Robin Wise, Tournament and Junior

Competition Coordinator; Liz Grayston, Junior Recreation Coordinator; Teresa Knudsen, Office and Program Assistant; and Shanda Stoner, Data Entry & Web Administration. Jane Waterstradt, Utah District Tennis Service Representative who is employed by the Section, has

also done a tremendous job in providing advocacy and helping promote and grow the sport of tennis in communities throughout our State. I wish to express a special thanks to the Board of Directors of the Utah Tennis Association. The

Board includes some new members and veterans as well. Together we have worked through many issues and have jointly promoted tennis in Utah. Ric Hammond is the incoming President of the Board and I look forward to working with him during the next two years. It is my wish and hope that we continue promoting the sport and growing tennis in the future. Thank you for the

opportunity and privilege of being your president for the past two years.

Michael Cooper, President

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT . . .

In 2010 we experienced significant growth in Adult League Tennis with an over all increase in participation by 9.7 percent compared to 2009. This increase also marked a milestone for our association which had more teams and players participating in adult league tennis than ever before in the history of Adult League participation. Our goal in the coming year will be to maintain those numbers and make sure we have a

quality league program for all of our adult players. New in 2010—the USTA allowed players 18 & older to compete in adult leagues. Through the help and direction of the Adult Recreation Committee chaired by Larry Erickson we piloted a new program, the Mid Season Qualifier, that gave our USTA Adult League Teams a chance to compete in the tournament with the winners earning a spot in the Adult District Playoffs. A special thanks to Kathy Cameron and Jean Greenwood who served as the Tournament Directors. Even though the weather did not cooperate, the tournament was a huge success and the committee has recommended and the board has approved offering the tournament to all NTRP levels in 2011. We also crowned a National

champion—the Men’s 2.5 Team from Salt Lake Swimming & Tennis captained by Christian Oliphant and coached by John Lin. The team traveled to Palm Springs to compete and ended taking first place and the 2010 Men’s 2.5 National Championship.

Through continued special partnerships and collaborations with other allied organizations, including the University of Utah Rehabilitation Center, the TRAILS program, McCarthey Family Foundation, the USTA and Intermountain Section Wheelchair Tennis continues to grow. We were able to establish a new working committee, the Utah Wheelchair Tennis Committee, chaired by Susan Daynes. The committee members have been actively involved in supporting various Wheelchair programs; One Up One Down Series, clinics and the annual Wheelchair Tennis Camp. The programs have provided tennis playing opportunities to beginners

trying tennis for the first time as well as to intermediate and advanced players. Through these special partnerships and the newly established committee we have been able to raise greater awareness for Wheelchair Tennis and to provide unstrained access to individuals with spinal cord injuries. Our partnerships have given us the opportunity to offer low-cost programs, court time and free equipment. We also had access to a sport chair specifically designed for tennis and additional playing opportunities for our core group of players and those individuals who are new to the sport. For some of these players tennis has been a life-

changing experience. It is so exciting and rewarding to see how the sport has improved their quality of life and given them additional recreation activities.

Our association was also very fortunate to be one of the many partners for the Tennis & Tutoring Program at

Liberty Park, an afterschool program that brings students from Lincoln Elementary to the tennis center twice a week to learn tennis and spend time working with a volunteer tutor. Through the generous donation of the Bastian Memorial Fund and Friends of Liberty Park Tennis the old tennis building was remodeled to serve as the classroom for those students who are involved in the program. On June 7, an Open House was held and the building was dedicated as the Travis and Desiree Bastian Learning Center. City officials including Mayor Ralph Becker, Judge Andrew Valdez and Dan Johnson from CHEVRON, who donated major funds to the

program, were all in attendance. Also in attendance and very special component of the program was Debbie Robb who has donated court and pro time for the students and Jennifer Strassburg who serves as the Tutor Coordinator and works with the volunteer tutors from the Lowell Bennion Community Service Center at the University of Utah. This program has worked because of all the committed people and groups involved. Our hope is to see the program grow and expand to other schools in the Salt Lake School District in the coming years.

Based on the number of USTA members, the Utah District remains the second largest district in our section with 19 percent of the total membership. As of December 31, 2010 we had 5,682 members which is a two percent decrease compared to numbers in 2009. One of our goals for the coming year is to increase our marketing efforts to promote the benefits of becoming a member of USTA. Membership is not just about helping you get in the game and on the courts, but your membership also gives back to the game and supports local grassroots programs and other initiatives that help to introduce tennis to special populations,

underserved youth and kids at risk in communities all across our state. Your USTA Membership really can make a difference! We are continuing to face a shortage of tennis courts, especially indoors, and we should all become advocates of tennis in our community to ensure that proper attention is given to our sport. We also need to make sure that when community leaders and planners are re-developing or developing new recreational areas and parks in our communities that construction of new tennis courts and required maintenance of

existing courts is included as part of their master plan.

TREASURER’S REPORT . . .

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT . . . Continued from pg 4 I also want you to know how much our staff is committed to the mission to promote and develop the sport of

Tennis. All of them, including Jane Waterstradt, Utah District Tennis Service Representative who is an

Intermountain Section employee, have worked very hard this past year to grow tennis participation. And while we said goodbye to Fritz Heinecke, we welcomed Jill Bruderer, our new Adult League Coordinator. She has been a great addition to our staff. Our board, committees, and volunteers should also receive a great deal of credit as they have worked equally hard at all levels of the organization to make sure our Association provides quality programming to our members. A special thanks to all of our tennis facilities both public and private for their tremendous support and for helping make tennis happen in our State. I hope we all take the time to enjoy and play more. Thanks to all those who have so generously taken the time to give back to the

sport and to share your love of the sport with others. Linda Vincent—Executive Director

The 10th annual Boys High School Tennis Camp was held at the Salt Lake Swimming & Tennis Club under the direction of Tennis Director Mike Trabert. The two-day camp offered 10 hours of on- and off-court training and instruction for high school aged boys who play, or want to play, on a high school tennis team. Eighty boys participated from all over the state. Each one received a t-shirt, a USTA Junior Membership, and lunch. Their coaches were also invited to attend and participate. Thanks to the generous donation from the Youth Tennis

Foundation of Utah, the camp was offered at a reduced rate of $50 for each player. The 16th annual Girls High School Tennis Camp continues to grow and attract young, aspiring tennis players who are currently competing or trying out for their high school tennis teams. Coaches and players from all over the state participated. 145 girls received 10 hours of on and off court training, a free t-shirt, and a USTA Junior Membership. Thanks to Rick Billings, Head Tennis Professional at the Sports Mall, for organizing this extremely successful camp! Rick wants next year to total 200 girls!

Utah High School Coaches Workshop was held February 20 in conjunction with the Boys High School Tennis Camp at the Salt Lake Swimming & Tennis Club. Twenty-five coaches attended the 5-hour workshop that included lunch. The workshop was conducted by a USTA National Trainer. Several of the schools attending participate in a No-Cut policy for their teams. Special guest speakers included Becky Anderson from the Utah High School Athletic Association and Terry Miya, Chief Umpire from the Utah Umpire Association.

The USTA’s Tennis On Campus program is designed to provide college students with opportunities for team camaraderie, social networking, and rivaled competition through tennis without the rigors of a varsity program. Perfect for athletes who have chosen not to make the jump from high school to college varsity, Tennis On Campus offers co-ed team-based play, regional and national championship competition, and

helps students maintain active and healthy lifestyles through their college years. Currently, the program is offered on over 500 college campuses and services over 30,000 students. The USTA Tennis On Campus program is anything and everything recreational tennis is on college campuses across the country. This includes sport club tennis teams, intramural tennis leagues and tournaments, recreational classes, and physical education classes. While all pieces of recreational college tennis are important, much of the Tennis On Campus program is focused on sport club tennis teams like the USTA National Campus Championship, USTA Campus Championship - Section Events, and many of the other Tennis On Campus events. Contact the

Intermountain Section office for more information, or visit the Tennis on Campus website, www.tennisoncampus.com.

In 2010, the USTA Campus Championship-Intermountain was held February 26-27, at the Salt Lake Swimming & Tennis Club in Salt lake City. Using the

WTT format, 16 teams from 11 different campuses battled it out for the rights to represent the USTA Intermountain Section at the USTA National Campus Championship. Participating teams from Utah were: Brigham Young University, Salt Lake Community College, Utah Valley University, University of Northern Colorado, University of Utah, Weber State, and Westminster College. In Utah Valley University fought a hard battle with Brigham Young University and took 3rd place. Utah Valley University received an automatic

bid into the 2010 USTA National Campus Championship that took place April 15-17, in Surprise, Arizona. During the 2010 USTA National Campus Championship, the Utah Valley University team took fourth in their initial pool and was placed in the Bronze Bracket. The team beat St. Louis in the first round eventually losing to Georgia Tech. The 2011 USTA Campus Championship-Intermountain will be in Salt Lake City, March 3-5.

The Utah District continues to lead the Intermountain Section with the most Tennis on Campus Club teams. In December 2010 we welcomed Utah State University to the program which increases Utah area schools to eight. The Utah District is looking forward to Dixie College to be a registered club in 2011. This past fall, the University of Utah, Salt Lake Community College and Utah Valley Utah each hosted a tri-team tournament. Locally, the Utah Tennis on Campus League series continues to be a huge success. In 2011 the Sports Mall will serve as the host facility with support from Salt Lake Swimming and Tennis. Utah Valley University was the top team during

the last league season.

The Cache Valley Tennis Association started 2010 off right by firming up the dates of all 2010 tournaments and made posters that hung on fences around most of the public courts in early spring. The website was updated and any e-mails through the website requesting tennis activities were answered. The CVTA also sponsored two Saturday Mixed Doubles Mixers and one Summer Junior Challenger Tournament in 2010.

When the paid contractor in charge of the two public parks tournaments suddenly stepped down due to lack of insurance, the CVTA stepped forward and became the volunteer tournament director for both tournaments. This was a very rewarding task because the CVTA was then able to make changes to the

two best-publicized and well-sponsored tournaments in the valley. For example, a tournament desk was added, phone calls were made so there were no defaults, and juniors were put in age categories. The CVTA board felt good about the changes and feels certain that by having well run public parks tournaments such as these, participation will increase each year. We look forward to 2011 and another year of successful tennis events. www.cachevalleytennis.org 2010 CVTA Officers: Vic Harris, President; Vic Phillips, Vice-president; Carolee Hammel, Secretary; John Michelson, Treasurer

COMMUNITY TENNIS ASSOCIATIONS . . .

What is a CTA? A Community Tennis Association is an organized group of dedicated volunteers and professionals who come together to support community tennis programs. As an association, the group works to coordinate and maintain programs and services and guarantees they are open and accessible to all. These tennis enthusiasts may act as advocates, program administrators, promoters, or fund-raisers. Fueled by

local volunteers, this not-for-profit association exists to promote and develop the game of tennis in the community.

The following are active registered Community Tennis Associations in Utah: Avenues, Cache Valley, Coach Mike’s Tennis Academy, Friends of Liberty Park Tennis, Heber Valley, Kanab, Marriott-Slaterville, North Canyon, Ogden-Weber, South Jordan, Top of Utah, Uinta Basin, Utah Junior Tennis Foundation, Utah Tongan Tennis Club and Wasatch.

CTA Highlights: (As of print time, the following CTAs had submitted information to UTA.)

Cache Valley Tennis Association

Heber Valley Tennis Association We have found tremendous success with tennis in Heber Valley. In the spring, generally starting in June, we have a mixed doubles social – one per month for three months. The first hour of the social we split and rotate partners with just one set and no ad scoring to keep it quick, the second hour is men’s and women’s doubles. The party

isn’t over, after tennis we have potluck dinners at homes of members. These have been so fun that people just don’t seem to want to leave.

Matches for men and women are held at various condos that have courts, such as Valiasse in Midway, and now at the recreation center in Heber. Six new courts will also be completed this year at the high school. People are afraid to miss a week because they might not get back in; those who play get priority the next week. A couple months ago we started a format with eight men with no ad scoring. Each person serves one game then rotates. This lets us play with a new partner for seven rounds. We keep track of the score, and this is our seeding for the next week. The fun of it seems to learning to adjust your game to complement your new partner.

We have been doing QuickStart with elementary schools for four years now, and thanks to a grant from Utah Tennis Association, this has made it easier. We tried one middle school last year using regular balls outside. From this we had 10 9th graders who came out for the girls’ high school tennis team with 40 total trying out – the boys’ team had 30.

Wasatch Community Tennis Association Wasatch Community Tennis Associations (WCTA) is a multicultural, Non profit organization founded by Kevin Smith and Steve Vorasane. The WCTA’s mission is to help promote tennis in the Wasatch Community, particularly in the cities North of Salt Lake City. The WCTA operates year around and

includes the following programs and activities: Indoor and Outdoor Tennis instruction, USTA Tennis Block Parties, Junior Team Tennis, QuickStart Tennis, Tournaments, Awards and Recognition for Junior Participation.

Currently, the WCTA provides lessons to children at the grass root level, starting at 4 years old, as well as juniors participating in high school and USTA tournaments. The WCTA’s tennis instructors consist of high school coaches and various volunteer parents. Current instructors consist of Kevin Smith, Kyle Winmill (Assistant Tennis Coach at Layton High School), Steve Vorasane (Tennis Coach at Clearfield High School), Shon Eckert, and Jonathan Wright. The 2010 Weekday format was 4 doubles, and the 2010 Saturday format was 3 doubles. 2010 Participation: Weekday League, 46 teams/613 players; Saturday League 22 teams/182 players. No District or Sectional Championships are held for this league. World Team Tennis—WTT This is recreational team tennis at its best and is the most fun! The team format consists of 1 set each of

men’s & women's’ singles and doubles, and 2 sets of mixed doubles. The Adult Recreation & Competition Committee is dedicated to promote participation and create interest in this FUN league format and hosted a player party at the Sports Mall. The event helped to kick off the World Team Tennis League for 2010 with 15 teams participating. Thanks to Larry Erickson, Fritz Heinecke and the Adult Recreation Committee who organized the party. 2010 WTT Participation 15 teams/155 players. New Player Adult 2.5 Incentives

The Intermountain Section and the USPTA partnered to provide funding and incentives to USPTA Pros who fielded new 2.5 teams in the 2010 USTA Adult Summer League. The Utah Tennis Association took it a step further by offering the incentive to Non-USPTA Pros and Captains who fielded new 2.5, 5.0 teams in the USTA Adult League, and who fielded new teams in the USTA Senior and Super Senior Leagues. A total of $1,280 in incentives were paid out, and the return was estimated at $1,512 from new USTA Memberships, new league registration and match fees, which would not have been realized without the initiative.

Captain Zero Default Incentives In 2010, the Utah District also paid out over $9,674 in incentives to those league captains who had “zero defaults” in the course of their leagues. This incentive has gone a long way in reducing the amount of revenue lost due to match and total team defaults, all the while improving the quality of league play. Our goal is to have zero defaults in all of our leagues and to have “ALL” captains join in this incentive program. The incentive program will be offered again in 2011.

St. George Area Leagues St. George did not field any teams for the USTA Adult Summer League. The Utah Tennis Association is currently in the process of seeking a new Area League Coordinator.

Northern Utah Area Leagues In 2010 our new ALC Carolee Hammel was quite busy. She fielded two M3.5 teams, two W3.5 teams and two W4.5 teams. The winners of each division advanced to the 2010 District Playoffs held in Salt Lake City. This is the first year we have had teams representing the Cache Valley area and we look forward to seeing the league grow over the coming years.

Mid Season Qualifier Tournament New in 2010 a very successful program was offered as a pilot to the Men’s and Women’s 3.5 Adult Summer

League Teams. A special thanks to Kathy Cameron and Jean Greenwood who served as the tournament directors and helped to recruit teams for the event. Two M3.5 teams and 11 W3.5 teams entered and participated in the tournament. The winning team in the men’s division and the winning team in the women’s division advanced to the 2010 District Playoffs held in Salt Lake City. The tournament will be expanded in 2011 and will offer the opportunity for teams at all NTRP levels to enter.

Wheelchair tennis is one of the fastest growing wheelchair sports in the country. Growth in Wheelchair tennis in Utah was no exception with the number of regular players almost

doubling over the last two years. Rules for Wheelchair tennis are the same as able-bodied tennis, except that the chair player is permitted two bounces of the ball.

One Up/One Down Summer Series & Wheelchair Tennis

Camp The One Up One Down was again one of the bright spots in Wheelchair tennis in 2010.

Rather than offering it as a league, it was more of a monthly social where able body and wheelchair players signed up for one or all four series. The format was a round robin so players got to mix it up and play with different partners. Players were encouraged to bring a goodie to share and everyone had fun playing tennis and enjoying everyone’s company on and off the court. A very special thanks to Liberty Park who served as the host site for the Up Down Series.

Utah Tennis, with a grant from the Intermountain Section, also was able to again offer a very successful Wheelchair Tennis Camp in June, which had to be moved from Liberty Park to the Sports Mall due to inclement weather. The Camp had 20 participants. A special thanks to Dean Oba who helped coordinate the on court activities and Randy Curry, Larry Orr, Wally Lee and Danny Quintana who served as coaches and Liberty Park Tennis Centers teaching staff John Bennett and Lave Toli who also were instructors for the Tennis Camp. Also a special thanks to the Utah Wheelchair Tennis Committee, Trish Jensen, Jane Waterstradt and Linda Vincent for helping to organize the camp and the Sandbar who provided lunch for all the participants. A special thanks also

goes to Sue Sandwick, a therapist from the Rehab Center, who conducted a special off court seminar on strength

JUNIOR RECREATION . . .

Junior Team Tennis – Presented locally by Sports Authority. Wilson was the Official

Ball for the Salt Lake Metro League. The Junior Team Tennis Program was very successful in 2010.

Utah Tennis ran a USTA Junior Team Tennis Winter Indoor League program that ran January 9-March 6 with

matches being played Saturday evenings at participating indoor facilities. Sixteen teams and 117 kids participated in 18 and 14 & Under Intermediate and Advanced skill levels. The kids played as many games possible per hour. Lots of parents were there supporting and engaged in their kids matches.

The Salt Lake Metro Recreational Series summer league ran for 5 weeks and included 6 matches. Fifty eight teams and 394 players participated. Divisions included 18, 16, 14; 12 & Under, Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced. Players participated from Grantsville Tennis, Marv Jenson, So. Davis, Cottonwood Heights, Murray City, South Jordan Recreation Centers, North Canyon Tennis Club, Highland High School, Tooele, and Liberty Park Tennis Center. Top Teams from each division advanced to the Recreational Series Playoff Tournament held August 2 – 3 at Liberty Park. Winners and finalists in each division received a custom screened backpack and medals. There were also several community based Junior Team Tennis programs held in 2010 with the following participation

numbers being reported: Sports Mall (300), Salt Lake Swimming & Tennis Club (337), Cottonwood Country Club (50), Kearns Oquirrh Park (50), North Canyon – QuickStart Tournament (25), Cottonwood Heights – QuickStart Tournament (30), Park City Racquet Club (400), Sports Academy (45), Brigham City (44), Logan (25), Summit Athletic Club (50), Tonaquint Park (80), Green Valley Resort (80), Central Utah (600), Ogden (500).

USTA Junior Team Tennis 10 &Under QuickStart Pilot Program The pilot program consisted of eleven

teams and 29 kids, that was held for 4 weeks in September on with matches played Friday afternoons at Coach Mike’s Tennis Academy. The juniors in the league played their matches on smaller 60’ courts using throw down lines and low-compression balls. Two parents were on each court helping the players call lines and scoring no-ad games. Fees for the league

were $50 per player that included a new racquet, a USTA Jr. Membership, Nike dri-fit shirt, court time, balls, awards, and a participation certificate, as well as a player pizza party on the last day of play. Both the kids and parents had a great time. Parental participation was key to the success of this program!

Recreational Coaches Workshop Saturday, May 22, 35 attendees attended this inexpensive six-hour workshop,

that included lunch, and was conducted at the Sports Mall, by Frank Adams, a USTA Master Trainer. This workshop provided instruction on teaching large groups, running effective team practices and QuickStart Tennis. Those invited included elementary, middle and high school PE Coaches, league players, parks and rec. coaches, parent volunteers and retirees. Anyone interested in learning more about coaching was welcome.

Recreational QuickStart Workshops Five workshops were conducted in 2010. On January 31, 30 pros and coaches attended this workshop at the Salt Lake Swimming & Tennis Club. Sue Burke, a USTA QuickStart High Performance Trainer, conducted, and Lindsay Rawstorne coordinated the workshop. Several pros from the Sports Mall and Ivory Ridge attended. On April 24 the Logan Sports Academy assembled 25 pros and coaches to participate in the workshop conducted by Tom Fey. June 25, several local pros and coaches from Coach Mike’s, and Park City were trained at Liberty Park by USTA Master Trainer Frank Adams. And on August 17, two QuickStart Workshops were conducted by Frank Adams at the Marshall White Recreation Center and the Ogden YMCA; several staff from both attended.

QuickStart Tournaments for 8 & Under Utah Tennis sponsored three non sanctioned QS Tournaments in 2010

held in conjunction with the following Tournaments: The Chasebrook Harry James Memorial Junior Ice Breaker, the Junior Tournament of Champions, and the Ivory Homes Junior Utah State Open. The emphasis was on having fun and the kids had a great time playing doubles and meeting new friends. The parents were hands-on in helping the kids score and call lines. Each player received a t-shirt and a participation certificate. Pati Adamson from North Canyon Tennis Club and Charlene Peterson from Cottonwood Heights Rec. Center both ran QuickStart Tournaments at their facilities.

QuickStart and Sport Court Utah Tennis Association and Sport Court sponsored three community events where

players of any age could try their hand at tennis on a 36’ Sport Court using foam balls and smaller racquets. April 17 was the YMCA Healthy Kids Day held on the John C. Fremont Elementary School playground in Taylorsville. September 11 was The Avenues Street Fair, and September 29 several kids participated in a live television remote with KUTV

Channel 2 which was broadcast live from the Liberty Park Tennis Center during KUTV’s early morning show. Judge Andrew Valdez and Jennifer Strassburg discussed the Tennis and Tutoring Program which is held at Liberty Park. Students from nearby Lincoln Elementary School are chosen through an application process. The program is free of charge and is strongly supported by parents of the participants. This learning and education program is held 2 days per week with 1 hour of tutoring and one hour of tennis. Other partners of the program include Utah Tennis Association, Salt Lake Mayor’s Office of Education Partnership, Liberty Park Tennis Center, Friends of Liberty Park, Salt Lake School District, Lowell Bennion Community Service Center at the University of Utah, Third District Juvenile Court, the Desiree and Travis Bastian Memorial Fund, and Chevron and Dan Johnson.

JUNIOR RECREATION . . .

Marshall White Center – Ogden A Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony was held October 27, and broadcast live on ESPN Sports’ local radio station recognizing the summer-long effort to resurface the center’s tennis and basketball courts by Sport Court. A new basketball court was completed in the REAL Salt Lake soccer team colors. The court will also be used for Futsal, a variation of soccer, played on a smaller surface. The tennis court was resurfaced in light blue with white lines, and lighter colored lines were added to create a 60’ QS Court for 10 & Under as well as lines added to create 4 36’ courts for 8&Under. The event was a great success and the courts were filled with kids having a great time. The Marshall White Center is the first in a partnership between the USTA and Sport Court, and Sport Court plans to add 25 other court partnerships projects like this one, around the country in 2011. Before completion of the new courts outside, the Marshall White Center was conducting QuickStart tennis inside during

the winter. Jane Waterstradt, Jaime Capener, and Liz Grayston taught classes to kids from the local Boys & Girls Club. JTT and QuickStart Programs were also offered at local clubs, tennis facilities and in the outlying areas of our district. Our website currently lists 24 tennis facilities that run QuickStart tennis programs for kids 10 & Under.

“Make A Racket for Kids” Program - David Jones, a recent University of Utah graduate,

approached Utah Tennis Association with the idea for an afterschool tennis program targeting underserved youth ages 9-12 to raise awareness for tennis and to help combat the childhood obesity epidemic. Together with Utah Tennis David organized and taught tennis to 10 youth living at The Road Home at the nearby tennis court at Pioneer Park. The program ran for 6 weeks during the summer. The kids, whom at first were shy and reserved, soon fell in love with the game of tennis. David’s engaging personality inspired the kids to learn the game and by the last class they were sad to see it end. The last session included a pizza party and each participant received a new racket, a foam ball, t-shirt, participation certificate, and a $20 gift voucher from the Salt Lake Education Foundation towards the purchase of a new pair of tennis shoes. Representatives from the Salt Lake Education Foundation and the Salt Lake City Mayor’s Office were in attendance as well as local media.

The program expanded in the fall and was offered in partnership with the YMCA and David once again volunteered his time to teaching tennis afterschool at the YMCA’s Youth Community Center in Taylorsville. The classes were conducted in the John C. Fremont Elementary school gym next to the center. The six week program was offered on Friday afternoons. 60 kids participated and had a great experience learning tennis. The afterschool tennis program will

continue to be a part of the YMCA club programs and will expanded to Fox Hills Elementary in Kearns and hopefully will be expanded schools through the YMCA in the coming year.

USTA School Tennis The USTA School Tennis program introduces the lifetime sport of tennis to students in schools. USTA School Tennis Program strives to introduce students to the basic skills of tennis during physical education classes and encourages them to join after-school USTA Team Tennis Programs. USTA School Tennis remains one of the most popular and effective ways to introduce tennis to thousands of students each year. Utah Tennis Association’s Liz Grayston, Junior Recreation Coordinator, works closely with regional USTA School Tennis Clinicians: David Pack – Salt Lake City, Jaime Capener – Weber County, Terry Bogucki – Kearns, and Garth Allen – Southern Utah, and Chris Toli – Glendale. The schools program is also being conducted by Bill Damron in Park City, reaching over 1500 students and Ed Raab at Kearns Oquirrh Park held a program for students at Beehive Elementary and during the winter months, the program continues indoors with education classes for the kids on public speaking. In-services were also conducted by David Pack and Jaime Capener at Jordan Hills Elementary and So. Jordan Junior High Schools, as well as 30 follow-up PE Tennis classes taught at Jordan Hills Elem., Churchill Jr. High, and Evergreen Jr. High. Additional free equipment and

schools curriculum are provided to teachers who attend the In-service and join the USTA as an Organization Member. The schools program is also very active in the Weber School district and in St. George.

With the help of Russ Edman, Stan Keefer, a fifth-grade teacher at Plain City Elementary, painted two QuickStart courts in June with permanent lines on the playground. With the QuickStart tennis equipment the school received

through a Utah Tennis Association Grant, the kids began playing outside during lunchtime and after school. The program is so popular that Stan plans to paint two more QuickStart courts on the other side of the playground next year. Heber Valley taught after school QuickStart programs at four grade schools and one middle school. Girls from the Wasatch High School Tennis Team helped teach, and proceeds earned from the programs are used to help the girls buy uniforms and equipment. The program was a tremendous success, and 12 girls from the middle school program now want to play for Wasatch High School. Terry Wagstaff, President of the Heber Valley Tennis Association, says that since they have been involved in growing high school tennis, the program has grown so much that this year they had 16 girls returning to play. This success is attributed to their QuickStart programs. More than 1,500 kids are playing tennis in schools across the state.

Raising A Racquet Program is an after school tennis program run by Utah Tennis Association at Rose Park Elementary School. Three sessions were held in 2010 with over 45 students participating. Each session consisted of 5, 1-hour group lessons, conducted by instructor and schools clinician Chris Toli. Students used shorter racquets and large foam balls, and learned how to play tennis inside their gym. At the completion of each session, students received a new racquet, t-shirt, and a participation certificate. Because of the success of the USTA School Tennis program, several schools have expressed an interest in providing an after-school program for their students. Special thanks to Dan Johnson and Chevron for their support and generous donations to make this program possible.

Player Development/Junior Programs and Youth Recreation covers all aspects of junior tennis including introduction to the sport, recreational play, team competition, supplemental development programs, and individual tournament competition at District, Sectional and National levels. The Utah Tennis Junior Competition Committee provides many of the volunteers who help the Utah District Coordinator and make

suggestions and recommendations for our Juniors and Player Development. They, along with staff member Robin Wise, also coordinated the 2010 Junior Gran Prix Point Challenge sponsored by Utah Tennis, which remains a very popular incentive program for the junior tournament players. Co-sponsored by HEAD/Penn and Court Think Tennis Camp

Player Development/Junior Competition Player Development/Junior programs offer additional training opportunities for juniors. The Utah District Competition Training Center and Team Utah come under the Junior Competition Committee’s jurisdiction. These supplemental programs are designed to enhance these exceptional players’ tennis performance in conjunction with independent training. The selection process for the juniors is based on

rankings, interest, enthusiasm, tournament participation, dedication and sportsmanship. The Team Utah and CTC programs for the 2010/2011 season focused on helping our top juniors reach their full potential and giving them the opportunity to receive both on and off court training to help them get to the next level. The Junior Recreation & Competition Committee and Junior Competition Coordinator Robin Wise works closely with the coaches and parents to help educate them on the competitive opportunities for our juniors as well as providing information to those who have the desire to progress in junior competition in the District, within

the Section, and Nationally and to help prepare them for college play. A portion of the cost of the program was reduced, due to the success of the 17th Annual Jan Dowse Junior Tennis Fundraiser. A portion of the dollars raised by the UJTF were earmarked for junior tennis and will be used to help directly benefit those juniors who participate in the program.

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT/JUNIOR PROGRAMS . . .

Boys & Girls 16 Zone Team Championships The Utah Tennis Association has hosted this tournament for the past 14 years. Tournament Director Robin Wise, Utah Tennis staff and volunteers worked very hard to make it a

successful and fun event for everyone. One hundred forty-four junior players, parents and coaches representing five different Sections were in Salt Lake City for the tournament, which was held July 27 – August 1, at Liberty Park Tennis Center, and at Salt Lake Swimming &

Tennis Club. The Intermountain, Northern California, Southern California, Southwest and Hawaii Pacific Sections participated. Each team consists of 6 boys or 6 girls who compete in a non-elimination singles and doubles, round robin team format. The team format also allows coaching during the matches. A special thanks to Matt Iandolo, Head Women’s Coach at the University of Utah, who conducted special sessions for

parents and players. Many thanks to Site Directors Cindi Pearce and Mary Anne Macfarlane, and to all of the other volunteers and facility staff who helped with the tournament.

Youth Recreation & Competition Committee—Lindsay Rawstorne, Chair Overall participation in Junior Sanctioned Tournaments was up by six percent in 2010. We continued our Team Utah program this year with the same intent to give them additional practice time together and to play sets among each other. A lot of the top players tend to get isolated and we are trying to

get them to play with each other. The committee also worked on updating the policy for seeding our Utah District Junior Tournaments. Our previous policy was complex and did not always allow taking Intermountain Standings into consideration for those playing up in an older age division. The new seeding policy provides a more efficient system that better reflects the players overall playing record.

The committee meets regularly during the year and contributes many hours volunteering at the various tournaments. They are a very committed group of volunteers and truly caring about the development of our Utah junior players. 2010 Youth Recreation & Competition Committee Members – Rich Bohne, Marcia Panuzio, Paula Vernon, Sam Macfarlane, Marce Miles, Janice Smith, Julie Sweet, Beverly Taylor, Cindi Pearce, Shonnie Hays, Nick Smith, Kayelynn Bastian and Debbie Robb. Marketing & Fundraising Committee—Marce Miles, Chair 2010 was another great year for the Fundraising Committee. The 17th Annual Janet M. Dowse “Rally” For Junior

Tennis Fundraiser was held at the Cottonwood Country Club, it was a very successful event again this year due to

the hard work of Linda Vincent, her staff and the Fundraising Committee. The Gross Income totaled $19,415, up

$840 from last year. Expenses totaled $5,665.31, down $766.07 from the previous year. And the net raised

increased from $12,143.62 from last year to $13,749.69 in 2010.

Several changes were made to the Fundraiser this year. The Grand Prize Drawing tickets sold for $5 by Board

members and volunteers as well as each entrant in the Adult and Junior Tournament of Champions received a

drawing ticket for entering the Tournament. We also had silent auction items displayed during the tournament

finals so players could bid on the items, and prior to the Awards Ceremony that afternoon, hors d’oeuvres were

served instead of a full BBQ, which made it possible for us to reduce the cost to attendees. Gordon Monson

served as our Master of Ceremonies and the golf tournament was eliminated. Participation was about the same as

last year but we changed up the order of planned activities which kept attendees to the conclusion of the event.

The fundraiser ended with the Awards Ceremony and then the Grand Prize Drawing. The lucky winner of the

grand prize was Bart Hopkin who won a trip to the 2010 US OPEN over Labor Day Weekend.

The following junior awards were announced and all recipients were in attendance and accepted in front of friends

and family. The Wilbur Braithwaite Award Presented to Highland High School Boys Tennis Team; Kathy Rothfels

and Luceen Sullivan Award Presented to Skyline High School Girls Tennis Team; Lee Hammel Award presented to

Tyler Loong from Lone Peak High School; Ruby Hammel Award Presented to Valerie Anderson from Bear River

High School and the Jan Dowse Award & Scholarship was presented to Ashley Tanner from Alta High School.

2010 Fundraising Committee Members: Paula Vernon, Julie Sweet and Staff Members Linda Vincent and

Robin Wise.

The Marketing Committee operated separately from the fundraising Committee and had one single goal in 2010

and that was to overhaul the Utah Tennis Association website. The committee explored several options and in the

end with the approval of the Board, decided to go with the USTA web services. By going with the USTA Web-

service option, the UTA will have its own web site that will have the same template and design as the USTA’s

website, but we will be able to control and add our own content and information. This is a free service, and any

upgrades and enhancements would be passed along with no cost to us. The recommendation was based on

dependability, user ease, tech support and cost. 2010 Marketing Committee Members: Staff Members

Linda Vincent and Shanda Stoner.

2010 UTAH TENNIS WORKING COMMITTEE REPORTS . . .continued

Adult Recreation & Competition Committee - J. Larry Erickson, Chair In 2010 the committee focused on ways to grow adult league tennis and increase league revenue. A Mid-Season

Qualifier with men and women 3.5 players was held as a pilot program. The qualifier was a tournament that

guaranteed each team two matches, and the winners of the men’s and women’s 3.5 draws were given an

automatic birth into the USTA Summer League Districts held in August. The 13 teams that participated praised

the tournament and reported that they would like to hold it again next year. With this information the committee

felt driven to propose to the Board that a Mid-Season qualifier be held at all NTRP levels. The Utah Tennis Board of

Directors approved the proposal. The committee then approached the Section asking that they allow Utah players

to play two leagues at the same NTRP level during USTA Adult Summer League. After the Section allowed that

change the proposal was brought before the Utah Tennis Board of Directors who readily approved it.

Overall growth in 2010 league play demonstrated a nine percent increase in the number of teams participating and

an 9.76% increase in the number of players. In 2009 there were 390 teams and a total of 4,757 players who

participated in league; in 2010 there were 448 teams and 5,467 players participating with the majority of increase

from USTA Senior, USTA Super Senior and USTA Adult Summer League.

Also in 2010, Jane Waterstradt, Tennis Service Representative organized two USTA Adult Summer 5.0 Women’s

teams one whom advanced to Nationals. Our hope is to find 5.0 Men players and form enough teams to participate

in the USTA Adult Summer League next year.

The committee continues to support incentives for those captains with “zero” defaults during league play. Over

$9,674 was distributed back to the captains whose teams had no defaults. This program is successful in

protecting league revenue, while improving the quality of league play. Incentives paid by the ITA, USPTA and the

UTA are also distributed to those facilities, captains, teaching professionals that introduce “new” 2.5 MW, 5.0 MW,

Senior and Super Senior teams to league play. We continue to help teams advancing to National Championships

with part of their entry fee. 2010 Adult Recreation & Competition Committee members: Charlene

Peterson, Vice Chair; Terry Bogucki, Kate Sturgeon, April Blessing, Daniela Cramer, Marilyn Burrell, Kathy

Cameron, Terry Miya, Ann Harris, Shawna Paterson and Staff Member Jill Bruderer.

Community Development Committee—Jean Greenwood, Chair The Community Development Committee, along with UTA staff and volunteers, supported several Block Parties during the month of May, which is designated by the USTA as Tennis Month. These events are free for participants of all ages and generally run for a 3-hour time block. Free tennis instruction, games, on court activities and refreshments provide for a fun-filled atmosphere geared toward building interest in tennis for all ages. The Wasatch Community Tennis Association under the direction of Kevin Smith and Steve Vorasane hosted two

Block Parties in their area. The first was held in Ogden at Mount Ogden Park and the second was held at Steed Park in Clearfield. They were supported by the Ogden City Recreation and Utah Tennis Association volunteers. Between the events, more than 75 participants from the community enjoyed a great day of tennis. The Utah Tongan Tennis Club also held a terrific Block Party. They had more than 150 participants come for a fun filled day of tennis, games, and lots of great food. They used the event to kickoff their summer junior

program. Linda Vincent, Judge Andrew Valdez, Jean Greenwood, Kathy Cameron, Liz Grayson, and Jane Waterstradt were there to help promote tennis and participate in the activities. The newly established Avenues Community Tennis Association along with SPORTCOURT who set up a 36’ demonstration court participated in the 2010 Avenues Street Fair. The CTA had a booth at the fair and it was a great opportunity to make residents in the area aware of what the CTA is doing and to introduce them to QuickStart tennis. One of the CTA’s goals is to focus their efforts on getting the Courts at 11th Avenue in better

condition and promote tennis in the Avenues area. They plan to be a part of the Fair again next year. Liz Grayson, Jean Greenwood, Linda Vincent and Jane Waterstradt assisted in the days activities along with CTA members Helen Hogdon, Rick Billings and Dave Todoroff who are working hard to help promote tennis to the Avenues Area. Through the advocacy efforts of some newly established Community Tennis Associations, several new projects are on their wish list for completion.

* The Unita Basin CTA, with Dann Battistone heading the project, is working on new indoor and/or outdoor courts to be built in the Roosevelt, Duchesne and Vernal area. *The Ogden Valley CTA in Eden, under the efforts of Jennifer Belmont and Sharon Holmstom plan to work with the local school district to build four new tennis courts at the junior high school. This will enable more programs and tennis events to be held in the Eden area.

* Kanab CTA is also working with the city to build four new courts.

The goal of the Community Development Committee is to help strengthen all our USTA registered CTAs. We also are targeting areas to develop new CTA’s, especially in outlining areas and have or plan to have in the coming year meetings in Central Utah, St. George, Moab and Kanab to help these communities establish CTAs. By strengthening the CTAs, we can provide the impetus to move them forward with facilities and a growing base of tennis players, especially youth.

Several QuickStart Trainings were also held during the year at Salt Lake Swimming & Tennis Club, Sports Academy in Logan, Liberty Park, Marshall White Center and Ogden YMCA. The UTA Board committed significant dollars to support local communities/facilities in their desire to expand and offer additional programs as well as assist in establishing a Community Tennis Associations in their area. Grants were also made to support individuals, communities and parks to promote and grow tennis participation. Grants

ranged from $500 to $1,000. Some of the grants were provided to help with program startup and expansion as well as funding to help purchase QuickStart equipment. Those awarded grants were: Marv Jenson Recreation Center, Utah Tongan Tennis Club, Plain City Elementary, East Sandy Elementary and Liberty Park Tennis. We are pleased to have the opportunity to award these grants for equipment and programs and to assist individuals as an investment in the future growth of tennis. We hope to continue to aggressively promote funding opportunities in 2011.

USTA Individual Membership—Junior & Adults The Intermountain Tennis Association, as of December 31, 2010, is the 8th largest section in the United States with 39,421 members, just behind Southern California. Much of the Section and District’s funding from the USTA is based on percentage of overall membership. It is also imperative that ITA maintain a strong presence in memberships because endorsement spots for national junior play is based on a

percentage of our total membership. Utah is the second largest district in the Intermountain section with 5,682 members as of December 31, 2010 and comprises 15 percent of the total membership among the six states that comprise our section. As of December 31, 2010 our total membership was down slightly with a decrease of two percent compared to last year’s Membership numbers.

USTA Organization Membership USTA Organization members include CTAs, Schools, Tennis Service Organizations, Private and Public Tennis Facilities and Commercial Clubs. USTA Organization memberships were down slightly from 2009 with 57 Organization members as of Dec 31, 2010 compared to 65 Org Members in 2009.

2010 MEMBERSHIP STATISTICS . . .

Grievance Committee — Leeza Evensen, Chair The committee has the primary responsibility for resolving grievances and complaints filed by members in connection with sanctioned tournaments and programs sponsored by the Association. It is also the job of

the Grievance Committee to balance the interests of the person who is the subject of the grievance, his or her teammates, and very importantly, other players who may be impacted by the complaint or incident. It is absolutely critical that, at the time of the incident, complaints be directed to local umpires or the tournament desk for immediate handling. Parents are advised to restrain themselves in connection with their children’s matches and to resort to appropriate remedies. All players and spectators are expected to adhere to The Code and Rules of Tennis and demonstrate good sportsmanship so that everyone can have a fun and enjoyable experience on and off the court. 2010 Grievance Committee Members: Mike Cooper,

Ken Harris, Cheryl Jameson; Staff Members: Linda Vincent, Robin Wise and Jill Bruderer.

Audit Committee—Mike Cooper, Chair The Audit Committee is responsible for overseeing the financials of the association and compliance reporting process and the operation of the policies on conflicts of interest and the Governing Board-Association’s staff

communications. The committee in 2010 recommended to the Board of Directors to consider taking a portion of our reserves and paying off the Office Condo Mortgage. With the board’s full approval, Utah Tennis paid off its condo mortgage at the Hillside Business Center in June of last year. 2010 Audit Committee Members: Don Sorensen, Vice Chair; Marce Miles, Treasurer; and Staff Member Linda Vincent.

Administrative Committee— Ric Hammond, Chair In 2010 the administrative committee awoke from a deep slumber. We created goals and objectives for the Committee and Mission Statement. “The AC shall focus on volunteer recruitment, training and evaluating both

board members and new committee members. Create a pathway for volunteer development with the intent that new committee members demonstrate the ability and desire to become potential board members. Serve as both a resource and sounding board to the Exec Director. Provide input on salaries, bonuses, policies/procedures, staffing, equipment and physical facilities as needed and requested.” The committee developed a Committee Meeting Report Form for committees to use in reporting activity and results at each board meeting. An assessment survey was developed for board members and committee

member to determine background, talents and future interest possibilities from which an interest’s database can be created. A Board of Directors self-evaluation form was given to each board member asking them to assess knowledge and performance based on specific topics. Job descriptions were created for board members and each committee. Job descriptions for committee chairs and vice chairs will be/were also created. Goals and objectives for 2011 were requested from each committee.

Also, board standards were created along with staff bonus standards. A proposal was made to create an incentive opportunity for UTA staff to help fuel growth for the UTA. This would be separate from current bonuses. A new board member training curriculum was created, based on the board survey, and 4 new board members, representing the northern and southern parts of the state, were trained by the AC using the new curriculum. A board retreat date was set for March 12, 2011. The committee structure was reorganized. Fundraising was separated from Marketing and will stand on its own. Marketing and PR will be combined into one committee. A job description was created for the ITA District Rep position and approved by the board.

A new volunteer data base was created to collect volunteer information. A new volunteer coordinator was appointed to assist with tournament desk needs. A job description was also created. A new volunteer was appointed to manage our Facebook content. An exit survey for outgoing board members was developed to be administered by the board president. 2010 Administrative Committee members: Kathy Cameron, Vice Chair; Jean Greenwood and Staff Member

This tax-exempt 501(c)3 non-profit organization established in 1987, works closely with the Utah Tennis Association to provide limited travel assistance for junior players who might not otherwise be able to participate in sectional and national tournaments. The Foundation also offers a Junior Assistance Program, which covers USTA memberships and local tournament entry fees to juniors whose families cannot afford the cost of competitive tennis. Through an arrangement with local indoor tennis clubs, a Scholarship Program is

also available, in which clubs waive one-third of the cost of their regular winter player development programs, the Foundation pays one-third, and the junior’s family pays one-third. This program is provided for junior players who are not otherwise able to be involved in such programs or those who do not have access to an indoor facility in the winter. These children generally come from various public parks programs. The foundation also focuses on diverse non-traditional communities and works with other allied organizations to provide community outreach and tennis playing opportunities to special populations, kids at risk and underserved youth in the community.

A major source of funding for the Foundation is the Janet M. Dowse Memorial “Rally” For Junior Tennis Fundraiser. This event is organized by the Marketing & Fundraising Committee along with the help of UTA Staff members and Linda Vincent, Executive Director. The 17th Annual event was held at the Cottonwood

Country Club in conjunction with the Tournament of Champions with all the Finals being played at the club prior to the fundraising event that afternoon. Items for silent auction were displayed during the finals and tournament players had a chance to bid on the items. During the fundraising activities later that day, a drawing for prizes including a trip to the US Open, were held and Gordon Monson served as the MC for event and Awards Ceremony. The fundraiser also included special recognition and awards for Boys & Girls High School Teams and players for their achievements during the 2009/2010 High School Season. The event

raised over $13,700 for the Utah Junior Tennis Foundation. A special thanks to Dan Johnson and CHEVRON for the generous donation and sponsorship of the event and to Mike Dowse,

AmerSports, Wilson and the Dowse Family for their continued help and support of this event. A special thanks also goes to Marce Miles, Chair of the committee and her committee members and the UTA staff for all their hard work in putting on another successful fundraising event. We also want to recognize and thank the many generous donors and contributors to the silent and live auction, and prizes for the special

drawing, and to all those who attended and participated in this fun and worthwhile event. Due to the success of the 17th Annual Jan Dowse Junior Tennis Fundraiser, 100 percent of the dollars raised goes back to support junior tennis. The money is used to help directly benefit juniors who participate in one of our organized Utah Tennis

sponsored junior excellence programs, as well as helping youth through scholarships and financial aide who may not be able afford the cost to participate in local sanctioned tournaments and a junior player development program. Funds also are used to introduce tennis to youth and kids at risk from diverse multi-cultural backgrounds in our community. The 2010 Janet M. Dowse Scholarship and Award was also presented during the fundraising event and the recipient in 2010 was Ashley Tanner from Salt Lake and student at Alta High School. Congratulations Ashley!

The Foundation also wants to recognize and thank Todd Brashear and the McCarthey Family Foundation and Trish and Dean Oba for their support and contributions to the foundation this past year. Their support has made it possible for us to purchase two more custom-designed

sport wheelchairs specifically for wheelchair tennis and provide additional playing and training opportunities for Wheelchair Tennis in the coming year. In 2011, Utah Tennis will again be seeking support from the community so that we can continue to support youth tennis, wheelchair tennis and new programs and initiatives that will support our goal to grow the game of tennis at the grass roots, as well as give our top juniors additional competitive tennis opportunities.

USPTA/Utah Professional Tennis Association

2010 USPTA/UPTA President: Mike White The Utah Professional Tennis Association is a non-profit organization of Utah tennis teaching and playing professionals. The UPTA is affiliated with the United States Professional Tennis Association

(USPTA), although all tennis pros, regardless of their affiliation, are welcome to become members. The teaching professional is an important link to the players, and for that reason, the UPTA was established. Goals of the USPTA/UPTA: 1. To help promote the game of tennis. 2. Represent and serve the interest of the teaching professional and the tennis facility.

3. Act as a “delivery system” to any program designed to grow the game. 4. Foster cooperation between teaching professionals, tennis facilities, the USTA and tennis players in Utah.

Utah Tennis Local League Management (Grievance) Committee This group of seven people represents the various clubs and facilities which are involved in adult league tennis other than that directly sponsored by USTA/Utah Tennis. The committee determines operating procedures for the Fall and Winter Leagues and acts as a Grievance Committee for any grievances submitted during sanctioned league play. 2010 Local League Management

(Grievance) Committee: Larry Erickson—Chair; Jill Bruderer, Terry Miya, Shawna Paterson, Terry Bogucki , Charlene Peterson and Marilyn Burrell.

Utah Tennis NTRP Medical Appeals Committee - Dr. Leon Hansen, Larry Erickson and Jill Bruderer.

Utah Tennis Umpires Association Though an independent organization, the Utah Tennis Umpires Association (UTUA) works closely with Utah Tennis in providing certified officials for sanctioned tournaments and Adult & Junior League Playoffs held in the State of

Utah. Certified officials also work at college matches throughout the state, sectional and national events throughout the Intermountain Section and in other states. Additional opportunities are available at the professional level as well, and we have several district umpires who officiate at the US OPEN and other ATP & WTA events

throughout the U.S. More people are always needed for this work. The training and certification classes are free and normally scheduled at the beginning of the year. Additional umpire schools we also be offered during year and new officials need to be trained. If you have any interest in becoming an umpire please contact Utah Tennis Association for more information on the next training.
