CROWDSOURCING TIPS
Crowdsourcing is often done to gain the support of a community of people to think a certain way or support a particular cause. It requires hard work and dedicated effort. Here are 4 things to keep in mind when you are attempting to rally the troops for social good:
Just because you are passionate about a topic, doesn’t mean other people will automatically be. Whether we like it or not, the “What’s in it for me?” mentality comes into play here –especially with all the companies offering prizes for taking surveys or becoming a fan.
To combat this the average crowdsourcing effort has to motivate people with real meaning in their lives. Your time spent is very valuable — the more you put in, the more you get out. Establish clear, defined goals and then invest the time to make them happen.
An organization still needs to provide community management resources if it expects to sustain community interest. The less structure you have, the more time you can expect to invest.
People need to be told the rules of engagement and how to participate. These rules have to be clear, empowering for the crowd and directive in their end result.
It is good to give them some room for creativity and to be able to use the tools and mediums they are more comfortable with, but you still want to ensure you get the information you actually need.
No one wants to be seen as a kill-joy or squelch creativity, but for the greater good of the project and community you are working with managing with a close watch is necessary. Rules can be broken, the spirit of a contest can be thwarted, and unforeseen behaviors can necessitate action.
