Rabbis Message2010 CCAR Convention ReflectionsSteve and I spent a week in San Francisco this March to attend the 121st annual conven-
tion of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, the professional body of the Re-
form Rabbinate. The convention is held in a different city each year, with every sev-
enth year in Jerusalem (that was last year). This years convention was a special treat, because my classmates and I from the Class of 85 went out to dinner together one eve-
ning to celebrate our 25th year since ordination. It was wonderful to see them, and to
know that the bond we formed with each other 30 years ago during our year in Israel
still exists between us, even though of few of us have hardly seen each other during
these years. We took a moment to remember our three classmates who have died since
our ordination, all way too young. We also shared our concern for another classmate, who has been dealing
with serious illness this past year. We shared pictures of our children, and our thoughts on the significant
changes our movement has undergone since we were students. Being able to meet with colleagues to study
together, engage each other on the issues of the day, and simply to embrace good friends, is extremely impor-
tant to all of us, not only for our professional growth, but also for our emotional and spiritual renewal. It is aprivilege for me to share the company of the fine people who are members of the CCAR. Founded in Cincin-
nati in 1889 by Dr. Isaac Mayer Wise,zl, it is a venerable organization and I am proud to be a part of it.
After the convention had concluded, on the recommendation of Marvin Polonsky, Steve and I visited the Con-
temporary Jewish Museum, located downtown on Mission Street. We were well rewarded. This year the mu-
seum is supporting the writing of a new Torah scroll. The special treat for us was meeting the scribe, and
learning some specifics about the writing of a Torah scroll that were new to us. What is different about this
scribe is that she is a woman. Her name is Julie Seltzer. It was a delight to meet her, and her work is indeed
quite beautiful.
Seeing Julie at work was profoundly moving for me. The scribal profession traditionally has been closed towomen, and even the feminine form of the word for scribe, soferet, would be a contradiction in terms for the
Orthodox Jewish world. But as we watched her work, her face reflecting her complete absorption in the holy
task she had undertaken, and complete peace within herself, I could not help but contemplate what a miracle
this was. This is one of the greatest gifts of the Reform Movement to the Jewish community, and to modern
life - the commitment to full and equal participation of women in the life and faith of Judaism, and the celebra-
tion of the perspective that women bring to our community. This is a gift that had been denied to us for so
long within our tradition, and it is Reform Judaism that opened the door. (The current president of the CCAR
is Rabbi Ellen Weinberg Dreyfus, daughter-in-law of Marianne and our late beloved Rabbi A. Stanley Drey-
fus,zl.) Our colleague Rabbi Eric Yoffie, President of the Union for Reform Judaism, reiterated this accom-
plishment of Reform Judaism at our Rabbinic Alumni Breakfast. He reminded us as well that we are themovement that first committed itself to full and equal participation for the gay and lesbian community, and to
social justice, within the mission of Tikkun Olam, which we have pursued with the utmost intensity. Steve
and I left the convention, as we generally do, renewed in our pride to be members of the Reform Rabbinate,
and members of the Reform Jewish community.

By the time this bulletin reaches your home, we will all have enjoyed and celebrated another Passover. Be-sides Matzo, lots of wine and seders, Passover brings with it Spring and rebirth. Passover always begins at thefirst full moon after the vernal equinox, so by definition it is early in spring. Passover also occurs on the full
moon of the first month of the calendar, Nisan, so it really does represent a new beginning.
In that context, here at Union Temple while we are wrapping up events for the 2009-10 September throughJune school-based year, we are also starting to make our plans for the upcoming year. For example, we arebeginning the budgeting process. Each committee submits a proposed budget to the treasurer, from which thenext fiscal year's budget is produced and submitted to the trustees for approval. The nominating committeealso has been busy, and will have its final and official meeting on April 8th to set the slate for the officers andtrustees for 2010-11. We will have our annual congregational meeting on May 24
th, at which time you willvote on the officers and trustees, who will be installed in June. At this point in the year we are also conductinga search for a new student cantor, as Maria Dubinsky will be leaving us after June. Look in future Bulletinsfor the farewell event for Maria. Similarly, our school administrator/student rabbi, Ann Landowne, will bemoving on, and we are hiring a new school administrator for the upcoming school year. Then we will have acalendar meeting in June when we start to fill in dates for the upcoming year. So, the officers and trustees, and
our committees, along with the temple administrator and Rabbi, are very busy.
Meanwhile, we are looking forward to upcoming events. Most significantly, we will be honoring our Rabbi,Dr. Linda Henry Goodman, as she celebrates her twenty-fifth year as a Rabbi, and her receipt of an honorary
doctorate. Please join us on April 30th, as we appreciate Rabbi Goodman and her accomplishments.

April is here, and at last we can dance through thecherry blossoms in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden in-
stead of sludging through the snow on our way to
work. Sisterhood is celebrating the season with our
popular Sisterhood Shabbat and Luncheon. So brushthose matzo crumbs from your hands and mark your
calendar for Saturday, April 10th. Join us at 10:30
AM for a beautiful Shabbat service, an inspiring talkby our own Dr. Ann Landowne and a luscious luncheon.
You'll enjoy every moment of this delightful welcome to
the season.
Still feeling a little stressed out from our long winterof record-breaking snows? Not to worry. Drs. Gail
Levine and Robert Fried can help us relax, renew, and
find peace. On Sunday, May 16th, at 10 AM, they willpresent for Sisterhood their revitalizing program,
Finding the Peace Within: Tools to Reduce Stress
and Strengthen Spirituality. Through gentle medita-
tive techniques, including balancing and walkingmeditation, Yogic breath work and guided visualiza-
tion employing imagery drawn from the Torah, they
will teach us how to relax and renew and find innerpeace. This energizing, regenerating program is open
to men as well as women, and we know that everyone
who longs for inner peace will want to participate.
Surely, that includes us all!

The story of Passover and the exodus from slavery to freedom began with the love of a sister for her infantbrother Moses. Miriam hiding in the reeds and watching over her brother as he floated helpless and vulnerable
is a touching image. As parents we hope to see love and caring manifested in our childrens relationships with
their siblings and sometimes we feel anxious and helpless in the face of sibling conflicts and rivalries.
This past month I spoke with preschool parents about the joys and challenges of sibling relationships. In theTorah there are many cautionary tales about the dangers of unbridled sibling rivalry. In analyzing these stories
we often discover that the problems between the children are set into motion by the feelings and actions of the
parents. At times God, in a parental role, also seems to exacerbate conflicts, as in the story of Cain and Abel.
Preferring Abels offering of meat over Cains gift of produce preceded the conflict between the brothers.
Im including some tips that I shared with the parents for encouraging healthy sibling relationships.
1. Reflect on your own sibling relationships, what has worked well in your relationship over the years and
what has been problematic. Reflecting on your own sibling relationships will prepare you to be more sensitive
to your children. (If you are an only child you will need to do a little research asking friends and family this
question)
2. Appreciate your child for who he or she is, and try to avoid making comparisons between your children.
3. Conflicts between siblings are inevitable and will not prevent siblings from developing deep and loving
friendships in the future. Let them try to work out the difficulty themselves and only step in when appropriate
or necessary. Try not to micromanage for them.
4. Focus on safety. Keep an eye out for excessive physical conflict or fear in sibling relationships and enforce
appropriate boundaries and limits.
5. Carve out individual time from the busy schedule for each child with each parent. (In a two parent household)
6. Engage in family activities and rituals
that are fun and build shared memories.
7. Be aware of your childs developmen-tal level and let that level be your guide
in planning activities and developing rou-
tines.
8. Model appropriate ways to handle con-
flicts and disagreements.
9. Aim high. Create an atmosphere of
respect, love and warmth.
10. Have fun and encourage laughter and
humor. As we celebrate the last days of Passover
and we begin to count the Omer, the daysbetween Passover and the holiday of Sha-
vuot, lets count our blessings as well and
help our children establish positive rela-
tionships.

Preschool Rested and Ready for SpringWe all returned from the Presidents Week breakrested and ready for spring. The Preschool celebrated
Purim with Rabbi Goodman: the Hummingbirds wore
costumes and made beautiful animal groggers (noise
makers), while the other classes made groggers andcrowns. In addition, Rabbi Goodman read us the story
of Purim (The Megillah). Whenever she said the name
Haman, (the bad guy in the story), all of the kids
made noise with their groggers to drown out his name.
We are also starting to plan for our summer program,
which will run from June 14th through July 30th. Ap-
plications will be available shortly. Please call the pre-school if you are interested. You dont have to be a
currently student to be eligible. Scheduling is very
flexible, but you must sign up for a minimum of two
days per week. (On Wednesdays, campers will takeswimming lessons at the Eastern Athletic Club.)
Plans for the annual silent auction are underway as
well! We need a lot of donations to make this event a
success. The auction, which has been held ONLINE
since 2008, will run from April 19th to April 30th.
And now for some classroom news
The Chickadees have grown immensely since thebeginning of the year. Their play has become more
complex, and they are beginning to play more with
one another, rather than just side by side. Also, theirverbal skills are becoming stronger and they ask lots
of questions about the class, each other and them-
selves. It is amazing to watch them grow!
The Starlings are having a good time playing to-gether after their February break. Each child seems
taller, wordier and more at ease in the classroom! They enjoyed listening to stories about Purim and
making (and eating) hamentaschen, the tasty triangu-lar-shaped cookies of that holiday. The hamentaschen
helped the class segue into a shape study, and they are
now noticing triangles, circles and squares all over the
classroom.
The Sparrows are getting into numbers! The class
has begun looking at the calendar and marking off the
days. They have discussed the old adage, "Marchcomes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb." The
children discuss the weather and decide if it is a "lambday" or a "lion day" and attach a lamb or lion to the
appropriate place on the calendar.
The Robins and Swallows have been really inter-
ested in listening to stories lately. George and Martha, two hippo friends, have been very popular! More re-
cently they compared two versions of the old time fa-
vorite Who Took/Stole the Cookies from the Cookie
Jar? Everyone chimes in to the refrain of: Who
me? Yes, you. Couldn't be. Then who?
The Hummingbirds are getting ready to celebratethe 100th day of school. They are bringing in 100 ob- jects that they then will glue to a hat. They will also
count 100 objects, and measure 100 inches. They will
cap off the day with a pizza party.

It seems that the Brotherhood could appropriate theUS Postal Service Neither rain nor snow because
despite the monsoon like weather last month nothingcould stop a great turnout at the annual Brotherhood
Shabbat. Its always a wonderful occasion as membersof the Brotherhood contribute to the service including
the Devar Torah very ably delivered by Arnold Ko-
likoff. A special thanks to Student Cantor MariaDubinsky and Music Director Dr. Jonathan B. Hall
who guided Brotherhood through the service.
After enjoying a potluck lunch everyone headed back
out into a very wet Saturday feeling very much up-
lifted by the experience.
We are also looking forward to Mitzvah Day on
April 18th. Please don't forget to bring your clothing
donations.
