Carver Weekly Newsletter April 11, 2018
Busy, Busy, Busy at Carver—Great is God’s Faithfulness!
There is always so much going on here even as we head to the end
of Term 3 – for perspective, here is just a little bit about that:
Student Council has organized a Jersey Day to raise funds for the
families impacted by the tragedy in Humboldt, Saskatchewan – the
Carver’s Lunchtime Clubs continue with the most recent addition of
Garden Club on Thursdays and the Bee Club soon restarting.
Activities for the athletically-inclined are as busy as ever with
some things finishing and some about to begin: Floor Hockey,
Badminton Intramurals, Table Tennis, Track and Field, Spring
Volleyball, and Ultimate Frisbee – they just won the first two
matches of the season! The Junior Destination Imagination teams had
a great learning experience at their recent DI Competition and
Drama students are practicing for the early June performances; more
information ahead on that. Our Band and Choir students have three
very busy weeks with Kiwanis Festivals and the annual Whistler
Music Festival and then they will prepare for an end-of-year school
concert.
Parent Student Teacher meetings are on April 26/27: remember to
book your appointments. Classroom devotions and prayer time
continue to begin our students’ days, Tuesday’s chapel featured our
chaplain, Julia Vanderveen, sharing a bit about her recent surgery
experience, and the Sun Run is less than two weeks away; please
sign up and join with the Carver Community on April 22. Beyond the
day to day teaching, supporting and coaching tasks, our Staff and
Administration continue to work diligently on plans for the two new
high school programs. There is so much for which we are thankful!
Plans for the upcoming Commemorating Carver Celebration at Broadway
Church on May 25 are shaping up and this promises to be a fabulous
night of remembrance, with a casual Photo Gallery Reception
followed by music, art performances, videos and more! We are so
excited to come together with all our students, staff, alumni,
parents and extended community to express our great gratitude to
God for His innumerable blessings to Carver! It is a busy season
for all of us but each day a gift!

UBC Updates for 2018-2019 Dear Grade 10 and 11 students, Can't
believe that in a short time you'll be applying to university! UBC
has updated their admission policies and have decided to take a
more holistic approach. They are recognizing that grades are not
the only way to demonstrate readiness for post-secondary studies.
So in 2019, students will get offers of admissions to UBC through
an academic assessment based on academic grades - it is
advantageous for students to demonstrate breadth, rigour, and
relevancy in their coursework! In my experience, after UBC makes
adjustments to their admission policies, other schools follow. If
you have any questions, please email me at [email protected].
Happy Planning! Blessings, Mrs. Lo-Voo UBC Updates for 2018-2019
Starting in 2019, UBC is changing how they evaluate students for
admission. Students in grade 10 and 11 please note the following
changes: 1. Students must still meet UBC's general and
degree-specific admission requirements
Graduation from high school The Grade 11 and Grade 12
degree-specific prerequisites
2. Students should still focus on their achievements beyond
academics The Personal Profile will be a very important part of
UBC’s online application. It helps UBC assess students’
preparedness for university study based on a broad range of
experiences and achievements. 3. Students should consider UBC’s
holistic approach to assessing secondary school coursework Starting
in 2019, UBC will no longer calculate a four-course average based
on an approved Grade 12 courses list. UBC will take a holistic
approach to academic assessments and will consider all Grade 11 and
Grade 12 courses when evaluating the competitiveness of a student’s
application – and emphasis will be placed on academic courses
related to their intended area of study. TIPS: UBC’s holistic
approach will focus primarily on marks in academic courses, but
will also consider breadth, rigour, and relevancy of
coursework:
1. To what extent have you excelled in secondary school, as
evidenced by your grades? 2. To what extent have you challenged
yourself in secondary school, as evidenced by the number and
academic rigour of
courses completed? 3. To what extent have you taken courses in
subjects that are relevant to you intended area of study?
You can demonstrate competitiveness in a number of ways, beyond
your grades:
Challenge yourself: Show UBC breadth and rigour in your course
selection, and/or take advanced courses (e.g., AP, IB, Calculus,
dual credit, etc.).
Demonstrate knowledge in your area of study: Take courses
related to your intended areas of study (e.g., math and sciences
courses if you're applying to Bachelor of Science).

On April 6, the Grade 8 Wings Class went on a field trip to the
CBC Newsroom. The whole newsroom where most of the work is done
felt very expensive and modern. A huge TV sat in the center of the
room, with layers upon layers of workstations surrounding it, with
the staff on call for their next assignment. One of my favourite
parts of the CBC tour was when we got to see a radio broadcast in
action, from the producers setting up the audio to a live
spokesperson reading her script into her microphone. Not only were
we shown the rooms where the CBC channel was produced, but we also
entered onto the stage where the planned news segments were
recorded. The amount of technology required for a single news
program was immense. Cables snaked across every inch of the floor,
all connected to several cameras where different perspectives can
be filmed. All in all, I was amazed at the amount of effort and
activity that took place behind a single news channel, and believe
that everyone in the class was impacted by the visit.

When we went on a field trip to the CBC newsroom, I was
expecting to see news reporters making their reports all day long,
and several gigantic newsrooms. When we got there, I was surprised
to see that the main operations center was a big room full of
people in their separate cubicles doing research and working on
their projects. I learned that in order to make a news report and
broadcast it across the nation, there’s more to it than a smooth
talking person and a camera. You need a whole compound full of
employees specialized in the news to make it work. Knowing this, I
will be able to more fully appreciate the people behind the scenes
and their work that goes into making the CBC news work.

Hope. And a Future Update
Over the past number of months the VCS Uniform Committee has
been meeting to discuss and plan for the new VCS high school
uniform. The committee was comprised of staff and parents from VCS
and Carver. Our mandate was to put together ideas for a more casual
high school uniform which incorporates our new school colours and
logo. A couple of weeks ago, Martket Branding Inc. presented their
options for both the uniform to the committee. We were very
impressed by their options, record of excellent customer service,
ability to facilitate online orders and dedication to delivering
orders in a timely manner. We are happy to announce that we will be
using Martket Branding Inc. to put together the main options for
our new VCS high school uniform. Following are some key points
about the our transition to the new VCS high school uniform:
The uniform is meant to be worn by students in Gr. 8-12 (High
School) for the coming 2018/19 school year. This decision was made
based on the feedback from the parent survey taken early last year.
Only Grades 9-12 will be required to wear a uniform the following
year (2019-2020)
Students coming from Carver can continue to wear their Carver
uniform for the next few years as we “grandfather” out the Carver
uniform. However, they are welcome to purchase the new VCS uniform
pieces if they wish.
Students in Gr. 8-12 who are new to VCS will be required to
purchase the new VCS uniform pieces. The new casual uniform options
will allow for different price points for some of the uniform
pieces as well as comfortable
fitting clothes for daily wear. We will host a modeling session
of the new VCS uniform pieces at Carver over a lunch hour sometime
in early May. Two to three uniform fitting dates will be set in mid
May after which ordering will begin.
If you have any questions, feel free to direct them to Mrs. De
Boer at [email protected].
