• Goal: Build out distance learning programs designed with

HBCU students in mind

• Faculty initially started building courses using open

educational resources (OER) in 2011-2012

• Joined Kaleidoscope Project for faculty training,

professional development, collaboration opportunities using

OER

• Founded Center for Excellence in Distance Learning to

broaden HBCU collaboration

• Online courses. Collaborative development of courses

using high quality OER aligned to learning outcomes

• Cost Savings. Eliminate cost of expensive commercial

textbooks

• Access. Every student has free access to educational

materials from the first day of class

• Flexibility. Ability to add, modify, excerpt, remix and/or

rearrange materials to:

Better align with learning outcomes

Student Receptivity Students are enthusiastic about free textbooks and materials
