Case study: Depression in Adults with Physical Health Problems

Healthcare Practitioners should be alert to possible depression (particularly in those with a past history of depression or a chronic physical illness with associated functional impairment) and consider asking patients they suspect may have depression two questions, specifically:

– During the last month, have you often been bothered by feeling down, depressed or hopeless?

– During the last month, have you often been bothered by having little interest or pleasure in doing things?

Discussion

• How would you know your trust is meeting this recommendation (which is a key priority for implementation)?

• How could NICE help you with that?

• Who would be identified to lead its implementation in your trust?
