2. Microsoft Word Template Reports

2.1 What Do They Do?

This feature enables you to use Microsoft Word templates to prepare reports with CDRimages. Whether it’s a simple letter, an insurance claim, or a long report, you cancustomize the look and content of the documents you use.

As you create templates, you build on and edit the work you’ve done previously. If youalready use Word templates, simply copy them into the CDR Reports folder (we’ll showyou how in this chapter) so they are quickly accessible from inside CDR.

2.2 Can I Still Use CDR’s Endo and Perio Templates?

Yes. If you are accustomed to using the “Classic” Endodontic and Periodontic templates inprevious releases of CDR, you can continue to use and edit these templates. Using the new Wordtemplates in CDR is entirely up to you, but if you’ve wanted to do more with documents, thenew Word templates can offer some attractive alternatives. As helpful reminders, we’ve repeatedthe steps for creating “Classic” Endo and Perio reports in Section 2.10 and Section 2.11,respectively.

2.3 Where Can I Find the New Templates?

The Print menu has been updated to provide easy access to the new template reports. Clickon Print and then on the Reports menu item to find both the new and classic styles.

2.4 How Do I Use Them?

We’ve provided several report templates in Version 2.1 of CDR. After you’ve read throughthis chapter, click on the Print menu, then on Reports, and then on Endo or Perio to findthe ones we’ve included with your new software.

2.5 Introduction to Templates

Templates are special types of documents that are ideally suited for generating reports.Whenever you start a new document, Word uses a template. Selecting the right templatesaves you valuable time by reusing elements (logos, practice information, page layout) thatyou’ve added in the template previously. Templates can be created to fit any format, andbecause they can be re-used, all of your finished reports can have a consistent look and feelto them.

One typical way of using templates is to save them with the general information about yourpractice (name, address, phone numbers, logo design). Other text information that you userepeatedly, like an introduction, greeting, or closing, can also be included.

CDR 2.1 provides several pre-defined template styles. You will also be able to create yourown templates (Section 2.8) or copy in styles you may be using already (Section 2.12).When you choose a particular template from the Reports menu, Word will create a newdocument based on that template.

2.6 Comparing Templates and Reports

A template can provide the starting point for a document, but it’s really the finishedproduct – the report – that matters most. There are some differences between reports andtemplates and a few guidelines to keep in mind. Refer to the following table for a briefsummary of differences.

Characteristics ofTemplates and Reports Templates Reports

Should I include images? Business Logos—YesX-rays—No

Business Logos—YesX-rays—Yes

Should I include text?

Yes, but use generalinformation that you won’t

need to change the next timeyou select that template.

Yes, since reports arepatient-specific, include as

much informationas you need.

Figure 2 illustrates an endodontic report template. At the very top of the template issome standard information about the practice – name, address, phone, etc. Unless youmake changes in this area, and save those changes, the information will be the same eachtime you open this template. Whenever you’re using templates, you will want to includeinformation you’ll need the next time you open the template.

Also on this template are two rectangular text boxes shown by the arrow symbols below. You would use these boxes to paste in images and text from the CDR exam. (Despite thename, text boxes can be used for both pictures and text.)

Figure 2. Endodontic Report Template

When preparing a report you would include specific information – for example, patientinformation, CDR images, etc. For this reason, you would not want to add these items to atemplate since they would not be relevant the next time you used the template.

2.8 Adding a New Word Template Report

TIP: You might use this procedure if you wanted to add a completely new templateand you did not want to edit one of the template styles provided with Version 2.1 software.

If you wanted to create a new letter template based on your own preferences, you will findthe steps in this section helpful. In the sample below, we prepared a new template usingthree elements:

• A logo design at the top of the page (A)

• Some basic information about the practice, for example, name and address (B)

• A text box for pasting an image from CDR (C).

To create this template, refer to the procedure that begins on the following page.

If the image is not exposed optimally, CDR displaysa dialog box and suggests how to improve the image. If image brightness is optimal, nodialog box will appear.

Users can also run the Exposure Advisor from the Measure menu whenever they open anX-ray image inside a zoom window. In this case CDR always displays a dialog box, evenif image brightness and exposure are optimal.

The Exposure Advisor is exactly that: an advisor or aid that you may not want active eachtime you acquire images. To suppress the Exposure Advisor, refer to Section 3.4.

3.2 Where Can I Find It?

After you have taken an X-ray, the Exposure Advisor may appear after the image isacquired. If Exposure Advisor does not appear, then:

• The exposure is good

OR

• You have suppressed the Exposure Advisor dialog box (refer to Section 3.4 formore information)

You can run the Exposure Advisor for any image inside a zoom window. Click on theMeasure menu and then on the Exposure Advisor menu item to start this feature.

4. New Layout for Zoom Window

4.1 What Does It Do?

The zoom window displays CDR images for evaluation and enhancement. For Version 2.1and higher, the zoom window has been redesigned to allow more room for images. Boththe large zoom window and the smaller mini-view have been expanded to fill the space onyour monitor and to display the information more efficiently.

4.2 Where Can I Find It?

You open a zoom window whenever you select an image from a CDR exam and click onthe Zoom In toolbar button. (Clicking on the image with the right mouse button andchoosing Zoom In from the short menu also opens a zoom window.) If theAUTO_ACCEPT line has been set to YES in your CDR.INI file, a zoom window opensautomatically whenever you acquire an image.

5. JPEG Compression

5.1 What Does It Do?

JPEG is a popular format for storing and compressing graphic files. JPEG uses lossycompression — a technique that discards some data to achieve significant reductions in filesize. Complex picture graphics, and video images especially, can benefit from the JPEG’shigh compression rates. In CDR, a typical X-ray image can be compressed by a 17:1 ratiousing JPEG compression.

NOTE: Although JPEG compression will substantially reduce the size of a file, some lossof image quality will occur. To compress an image with minimal loss of quality, use LeadPQ1 compression. Lead PQ1 provides the best lossy compression, but its compressionrate is less than JPEG’s. Using PQ1, a typical X-ray image in CDR can be compressed byapproximately a 5:1 ratio.

CDR’s support for JPEG means you will also be able to import JPEG images from otherprograms or share them with other users using the Export feature.

5.2 Where Can I Find It?

CDR gives you several formats to choose from when you import, export, store, andcompress images. Starting in CDR Version 2.1, the JPEG format joins other formatsavailable in CDR. To select JPEG, you need to open the appropriate dialog box and selectthe format from a drop-down list. In the next section, we’ll provide you with moreinformation on these dialog boxes and provide a sample graphic of each one.

5.3 How Do I Use It?
