Mega-trends that drive emerging markets in Africa(1)

1. Urbanisation – “By 2025, Africa will have 350 million middle-class consumers, and the second highest

number of city dwellers of any global region.”

2. Regional Integration – “… creation of a grand free trade zone incorporating most, if not all, of the

countries on the continent, but also a rise in electricity trade through power pools that will ensure supply security.”

3. Connecting the Unconnected – “… by 2020, mobile penetration in Africa will have more than

doubled from the numbers recorded in 2009.”

4. Innovation to Zero – “… poverty, hunger and a lack of sustainable development as Africa's three biggest

5. Renewable Power – “According to the Africa Infrastructure Country Diagnostic, chronic power problems

impede growth and productivity in more than 30 African countries.”

“All these trends are global and global ramifications thereby offering scalable opportunities.”

Mentoring through the Living Lab Approach

The idea of a Living Lab first emerged in Europe

and later in other continents.

The emphasis was on fostering innovation;

consequently it was then called the Living

Innovation Laboratory.

Innovation is an integral component of all

development activities since it allows

development activities since it allows

organizations to involve end-users to participate in

the development of new service(s).

The Living Lab approach offers multi-role and

multi-faceted involvement of the customer, who

will in turn suggest “innovative ideas, validate the

design, and become involved in a dialogue with a

producer”

20 years ago, companies often trained new engineers by assigning them

(either formally or informally) to more experienced colleagues for

Conclusion (1)

Education System

• Poor performance of learners, including, as is the case in South Africa, poormatriculation results, low pass rates and poor grades for those who do pass, isrooted in the structures of our educational system, and partly due to our history.

• There is very little, or no support at all for learners in the learning process, making

No Support

• There is very little, or no support at all for learners in the learning process, makinglearning a very harsh experience for some youth.

E-Mentoring

• The proposed e-mentoring models can increase the mentoring efficiency and can bean appropriate solution for Higher Learning Institutions (HLI), whereby theapplication can be delivered over networks on a subscription or rental basis.

• It would mean that HLIs can outsource some or even all aspects of their mentoringneeds.

• HEI must make use of multi-disciplinary teams where eventhe lecturer/coach forms part of the team.

Future Work

• Collaborative relationships with e-mentoring organizationssuch as MentorNet.
