Page 11: Using Growth Mindset to Maximize Your Children's Potential

Problem with ‘go to’ phrases… “You learned that so quickly….you’re so smart!”

If I don’t get it I’m not smart?

“ Wow, you did so well without even studying much, you’re brilliant!”

If I study I’m not brilliant?

“ Gorgeous drawing! You’re the next Picasso!”

Oh no… I better only do things I’m ‘good at’

1) Process Vs. Product Growth mindset:(On process) Fixed mindset: (On product) I see you’re struggling to keep your room clean. What about trying…. (brainstorm)

Stop being so lazy!!

I’m proud that you didn’t procrastinate You’re so smart, you’ll do great.

I’m sorry you were frustrated, what can you do different next time?

Math isn’t your thing, it’s OK

I noticed that you put in a lot of effort to work collaboratively with others

You’re the smartest one in the group

It always takes lots of practice to learn new things

Here, I’ll do it for you

Give it a try- here’s an idea of a way to do it No one in our family was ever good at that

The purpose: To teach.

DO NOT TEACH:

Children who break rules are punished and shamed

DO TEACH:

Think through issues. Always Think:

“Am I judging and punishing you or am I helping you think and learn”
