What is Conceptual Mapping?

O The conceptual mapping task (CMT) is a projective, free-association interviewing technique that directs the participant to create a visual depiction of a phenomenon (Impellizzeri, 2012).

O Conceptual mapping is a wonderful tool for use in qualitative research, counselor supervision, and clinical work.

Background and History of Conceptual Mapping

O First moved into Counseling research by Martin et al.

O Advantages of the structure they offered

Using CMT in Clinical Work

O As a tool for insight

O As a tool for assessing the progress and needed work

O In termination and/or transfer

Using CMT in Supervision

O As a tool to help supervisees “get unstuck” in counseling

O As a termination-phase tool in supervisionO Invites a supervisee-driven “story” of

the supervision relationshipO Provides an overview & consolidation

of supervisee gains
