Overview

WerecommendforeachtrainingparticipanttoinitiallyestablishthesameiPadsettingssothatalltheiPadsusedinthetrainingwillreactinsamefashion.Thesesettingsarethemostcommonsettingsusedbystudentswithvisualimpairments.Afterthetraining,youmaychoosetochangesomeofthesettingsaccordingtouniquestudentneeds.ThereareafewdifferencesbetweenvariousiPadgenerations.Thesedifferenceswillbediscussedinthismanual.

Fordetailedinformationaboutthesesettings–whattheyare,whyyouwantthesesettings,anddirectionswithscreenshotsonhowtoselectthesesettings,pleaserefertothe“IntroductiontoiPadAccessibilityFeaturesforBlindandLowVisionStudents”manual.

iOS7nowsupportsNemethCode–whenthemathiscreatedproperlyusingmathML.iOS7hasalsoaddedmoreoptionsforRefreshableBrailleDisplays(RBDs)andlowvisionfeatures.

TheiPadsupportsnumerousbrandsofRefreshableBrailleDisplays.Inthismanual,wewillusetheAPH18Refreshabraille,asitisthemostcommonRBDforyoungerstudentsintheschoolsetting.TheAPH18RefreshabrailleisavailableatnocosttoschoolsintheUSthroughAPHQuotaFunds.

TheRBDispaired(connectedthroughBluetooth)withtheiPad.OncetheRBDispaired,theRBDwillautomaticallymirrorthetextandcontentontheiPad,givingthestudentaninstantbrailletranslationthatappearsontheRBD.WhenthestudentproducesdocumentsusingthePerkins-stylekeyboard,animmediateprinttranslationappearsontheiPad.Teachersandparentswhodonotknowbraillehaveinstantaneousprintaccesstowhatthestudenthasjustproduced;TeachersandparentscantypeontheiPadandthestudenthasinstantaccesstoabrailletranslationontheRBD.

Definitions

TheiPadisintendedtobeapersonaldevice–usedbyoneperson.Appledoesawonderfuljobofprovidingvariousoptionstomaximizetheindividualuser’ssuccess.Eachpersonwilluseauniquecombinationofsettingsthatbestsuitstheirindividualneeds.

BrailleCodesAvailableontheiPad

TheiPadcurrentlysupportsavarietyofbraillecodesthatcanbedisplayedontherefreshablebrailledisplay,includingUncontracted,Contracted,Nemeth,6-Dotand8-dotbraille.

• UncontractedBrailleisliteraryGradeIbraille.Eachcharacter(letter,literarynumber,andpunctuation)isrepresentedbyauniquebraillesymbol.

• ContractedBrailleisliteraryGradeIIbraille.Contractionsareusedlikeshorthandinordertosavespaceandtime.

• NemethCodeisthemathcodeusedbytheUnitedStates.• UnifiedEnglishBrailleCode(UEB)istheliterarycodethathasbeenadoptedbymany

countries.TheBrailleAuthorityofNorthAmerica(BANA)hasrecentlyadoptedtheUEBbraillecode;theUnitedStateswillbeslowlytransitionedtothisliterarybraillecodebutwillcontinuetouseNemethformath.UEBisbasedonthecurrentbraillecode;lettersandnumberswillstaythesame.Therewillbesomechangestopunctuationandsomerulesfortheuseofcontractionswillchange.

• ASCIIBrailleissometimesreferredtoas“computerbraille”.ASCIIlettersarethesameasuncontractedbraille.NumberscorrespondwithNemethnumberswithoutanumbersign.ASCIIBraillepunctuationsymbolsaredifferentthanUSliterarybraillepunctuationsymbols.

RefreshableBrailleDisplayDefinitions

• RoutingKeysarethesmallroundbuttonslocatedbeloworabovethebraillepins.Whenyoupresstheroutingkey,theVoiceOvercursorandtheI-beam(ontheiPadscreen)willmovetothatlocationinthetext.IfyouareusingContractedBrailleandyoupresstheroutingkeybelowawordwithcontractions,thatword–andonlythatword-willchangetoUncontractedBraille.

• AdvancedBarsorPanningKeysenablethereadertopanacrossthebraille.OntheAPH18Refreshabraille,thereare18characters–meaningthatonly18letters,spacesandpunctuationcanappearatanyonetime.Toviewthepreviousornext18characters,theuserwillpresstheAdvancedBarwhichisalsocalledthePanningKey.

1.1UpdateiOSSoftware

AppleiPads,iPadMinis,iPhones,andiPodTouchesusethesameoperatingsystemsoftwarecalled“iOS”.Asaconsequence,mostaspectsoftheuserinterfaceforallofthosedevicesareidentical.

PleasemakesurethatyouriPadisupdatedtothelatestiOSversion.ThismanualiscurrentlyusingiOS7.TherehavebeennumeroussmallupdatessinceiOS7cameout;Applewillcontinuetohavesmallupdatesthroughouttheyear.IfyouriPadneedstobeupdated,thereshouldbeasmallred“1”displayedontheSettingsicon.

Note:TheiPad1canonlybeupdatedtoversion5ofiOS.

Tovieworupdateyoursoftware,gotoSettings>General>SoftwareUpdate.

1.2RotorSettings

VoiceOver–theiPad’sbuilt-iniOSscreenreader–featuresaninnovativevirtualcontrolcalledthe“rotor”.TherotorisonlyavailablewhenVoiceOveristurnedon.Turntherotoronbyrotatingyourthumbandfinger(oranytwofingers)onthescreenasifyouwereturninganactualdial.Apopupdialwillappearandyouwillhearauniqueclickingsound.Continuetoturntherotorinordertomovethroughthevariousrotoroptions.Theoptionsdisplayedwithintherotordependontheappyouareusing,thestateoftheappandtheRotoroptionsyouhaveselectedwithinSettings.

Therotorallowsyoutoconfigurethebehavioroftheonefingerswipeupandonefingerswipedowngestures.Forexample,wheneditingadocumentyoucanconfigurethosegesturestomovebackwardsorforwardsbyonecharacter,word,orline.Alternatively,whenusingSafaritosurfthewebyoucanconfigurethosegesturestomovebackwardsorforwardsbylinks,headings,buttons,andothertypesofelementsthatarecommonlyfoundonwebpages.

Toselectyourrotorsettings,gotoSettings>General>Accessibility>VoiceOver>Rotorthenputacheckbesidethefollowingrotorsettings:

• Character• Words• Lines• SpeechRate• Containers• Headings• Links• FormControls• Tables• Lists• TextFields• Punctuation

“MultitaskingGestures”arefourorfivefingergesturesthateasilyallowyouto:

• PinchtotheHomeScreen• SwipeuptorevealtheTaskbar(VoiceOvercallsitthe“appswitcher”)• Swipeleftorrightbetweenopenapps

ToturnonMultitaskingGestures,gotoSettings>General>MultitaskingGesturesandmovetheslidertoON.

DuringthistrainingwewillsetMultitaskingGesturesON.

Note:TheiPhonedoesnotsupportmultitaskinggestures.However,youcanopentheTaskBarbydouble-clickingtheHomebutton.

TosetTriple-ClickHome,gotoSettings>General>Accessibility>AccessibilityShortcutandselectyourdesiredoption(s).

WithiOS7,youcanpressandholdtheHomebuttonandtellSiritoenableaccessibilityoptionssuchasVoiceOver,InvertColors,AssistiveTouch,andGuidedAccess.Say,“TurnonVoiceOver”andSiriwilldoso.ThisoptiondoesnotworkwithZoomandsomeoftheotheraccessibilityfeatures.YoumusthaveinternetconnectionforSiritowork.

Duringthistraining,wewillinitiallysettheTriple-ClickHomeaccessibilityshortcuttoZoom,InvertColorsandVoiceOver.

YoucanadjustthespeechrateinVoiceOvertoyourpreferredrateofspeed.

TosettheSpeechRate,gotoSettings>General>Accessibility>VoiceOver>SpeakingRate.Movetheslidingbuttontotheleftforslowerandtotherightforfasterspeech.

Duringthistraining,wewillsetthespeedto45%.

TEACHERHINT:USETHEROTORTOADJUSTTHESPEECHRATEONTHEFLY.

1.6LargerTypeTheiPadallowsyoutoincreasethetextsizefromapproximately8pointfontto26pointfont.ThelinejusttotheleftofthemiddleA(ontheslider)isapproximately11or12pointfont.

Thelargetextworkswithalerts,Calendar,Contacts,Mail,MessagesandNotes.

Readingsmallemailandtextmessageprintisfrequentlyanissueforlowvisionstudentsandforolderadults.ChangingtheiPhonesettingstoalargerprintsizeallowspeople–includingseniors-toeasilyreadtheiremail/textmessageswithoutmagnifyingtheentireapporrequirelearninganothersetofgestures.

Tochangetheprintsize,gotoSettings>General>Accessibility>LargeText,turnDynamicTypeOnthenselectyourpreferredtextsize.

*ThereisaTextSizeoptionsettingunderGeneralaswellasunderAccessibility.

1.7BoldTextiOS7hasaddedanewlowvisionoption–BoldText.ThedefaulttextiniOS7isthinnerthanthedefaulttextiniOS6;however,younowhavetheoptionofBoldText.

Toturnonthisoption,gotoSettings>General>Accessibility>BoldText.ThischangerequiresrebootyouriPadtoapplytheboldtext.Apopupappearsaskingifyouwanttocancelorrestart.

Duringthistraining,wewillturnBoldTextON.

1.8IncreaseContrast

iOS7hasaddedanothernewlowvisionoption–IncreaseContrast.ImagesiniOS7oftenhavelesscontrastthantheimagesiniOS6.IncreaseContrastisanoptionthatwillimprovecontrastonsomebackgroundstoincreaselegibility.

Toturnonthisoption,gotoSettings>General>Accessibility>IncreaseContrast.

Duringthistraining,wewillturnIncreaseContrastON.

iOS7hasaddedparallaxandzoomingeffects-animationandmovementfeatures.Forsomepeople,thismovementiscausingmotionsickness.TheReducedMotionoptionminimizestheanimationandmovementfeatures.

1.10LargeCursor

AnothernewoptioniniOS7istheLargeCursor.WhentheLargeCursoristurnedOntheVoiceOvercursorboxbecomesathick,boldbox.Whenthescreenbackgroundisdarker,theVoiceOvercursorboxalsoincludesawhitecontrastlinealongwiththeboldblackcursorbox.

Toturnonthisoption,gotoSettings>General>Accessibility>VoiceOver>(scrolldown)LargerCursor.

Duringthistraining,wewillturnLargeCursorON.

1.11Auto-Lock

TheiPaddefaultissettoauto-lock(turnoffthedisplayandlockthetouchscreen)aftertwominutesofinactivity.OntheiPad,theauto-lockoptionsare2minutes,5minutes,10minutes,or15minutes.OntheiPhone,theautolockoptionsare1minute,2minutes,3minutes,4minutes,5minutes,ornever.Ifyouselect“never”youareatriskofdrainingyourbattery.

Tochangeyourauto-lock,gotoSettings>General>Auto-Lockandcheckyourdesiredtimepreference.

Duringthetraining,wewillsettheauto-lockto15minutestoallowforinstructionbetweeniPadactivities.

1.12SideSwitch:LockRotation/Mute

ThereisasliderbuttonontheouteredgeoftheiPad.Thisbuttoncanbeusedtoeithermuteorlockrotation.

Ifinthe“LockRotation”setting,theiPaddoes/doesnotallowswitchingbetweenportraitandlandscapemodes.

Ifinthe“Mute”setting,theiPadis/isnotmuted.Whenmuted,onlycertainsounds(alerts,notifications,typingclicks,soundeffects,gameaudio)aremuted;mediaplayback(music,podcasts,movies,videos)arenotmuted.

ToselectyourSideSwitchpreference,gotoSettings>General>UseSideSwitchto:andcheckeitherLockRotationorMute.

Duringthistraining,wewillselectLockRotation.

PriortoiOS7,whenusingGradeIIBrailleandtheRBD,studentshadtoquicklytypethefullwordfollowedbyaspaceorbypunctuation.Ifthestudenttypedabrailleletterslowly,theindividualletterswouldautomaticallybecomewholewordcontractions.Formanystudents,havingtothinkaboutthewordasawhole(insteadofindividualletters)andhavingtotypethewordquicklyencouragedthestudentstotypefaster.However,slowerstudentsmightbecomefrustratedbythewholewordsubstitutions;someofthesestudentsusedtoavoidtheautomatictranslationbysettingtheiPadtoGradeIBrailleonly.

WhentheAutomaticBrailleTranslationisturnedOff,studentscantaketheirtimetoproduceGradeIIbraillewithoutindividuallettersautomaticallybecomingwholewordcontractions.Thebrailleisnottranslateduntilthespacebarorapunctuationcommandisgiven–individuallettersarenotautomaticallyconvertedtowholewordcontractions.
