Agenda and Learning Objectives Time Topics 9:30 – 9:45 AM Welcome 9:45 – 9:55 AM Intro to the Case Study • gain an understanding of challenges surrounding data management in the research setting • evaluate a “real-world” data management scenario and recommend appropriate services and resources 9:55 – 10:25 AM Best Practices: Data Collection & Organization • learn the importance of organizing data including directory structures, files and file contents (datafiles) • learn best practices for file and variable naming and tracking their work • learn about strategies to organize research data and the importance of version control, consistency, standards, and tools to help them 10:25 – 10:55 AM Documentation and Metadata • create a readme file and data documentation • describe application of metadata and where to find standards 10:55 – 11:10 AM Break 11:10 – 11:35 AM Backup/Storage/Security • describe issues and procedures related to data access, security, backup and storage 11:35 AM – 12:05 PM Sharing/Preservation/Licensing • identify barriers to data management and sharing • describe appropriate repositories for data sharing 12:05 – 12:15 PM Closing the Case Study 12:15 – 12:35 PM Environmental Scan 12:35 – 12:45 PM Keeping Up with Data Management • describe resources for current awareness including… • discover resources for additional data management including DMPTool, etc etc 12:45 – 1:00 PM Wrap up Doing It Your Way: Approaches to Research Data Management for Libraries NN/LM MAR Research Data Management Symposium http://guides.nnlm.gov/datamgmt2014 Using a Case Study to Teach Data Management to Librarians http://dx.doi.org/10.7910/DVN/29213 Sherry Lake, Research Data Services, University of Virginia Library Andrea Denton, Research and Data Services, Claude Moore Health Sciences Library, University of Virginia The Case Dietrich, Dianne (2012) "Biophysics - Cornell University," Data Curation Profiles Directory: Vol. 4, Article 2. However, I thought the example case was more bench science than clinical which leaves some unanswered questions about clinical data extraction, management, etc.
