TheScarlett2i2hardwareinterfaceisthekeycomponentintheScarlettStudiosystem;thisprovidesthemeansofconnectingtheCM25(orother)microphone,musicalinstrumentsorlinelevelaudiosignalstoacomputerrunningMacOSorWindows.Thesignalsappliedatthe2i2’sphysicalinputscanberoutedtoCubaseLEorotherrecordingsoftwareviaaUSBconnection.Similarly,therecordingsoftware’smonitororrecordedoutputwillappearatthe2i2’sphysicaloutputs.(Note-computeraudiorecordingsoftwareisfrequentlyreferredtoasa“DigitalAudioWorkstation”,or“DAW”,andtheterm“DAW”isusedthroughoutthisuserguide.)

GETTING STARTED
IMPORTANT-PLEASEENSURETHATYOUINSTALLTHESCARLETT2i2DRIVERSBEFORECONNECTINGTHEINTERFACETOYOURCOMPUTER.
Software InstallationWe aim to ensure that the latest installation software will be on the disk included with yourScarlett2i2.Howeverwestronglyrecommendthatyoucheckforanylaterversiononourwebsiteatwww.focusrite.com/downloadsbeforeperformingthesoftwareinstallation.
The registration card (“Download your Software”) included with the Scarlett 2i2 enables you todownloadthelatestinstallersfromtheFocusritewebsite.
Mac OS1. Insertyourinstallerdiskintoyourcomputer’sDVD-ROMdrive.
2. Awindowshouldappeardisplayingthecontentsofthedisk.Ifthiswindowdoesnotappearautomatically,youcanmanuallynavigatetothediskusingMacOSFinder.
3. Locatethefile‘Focusrite USB 2 Driver.pkg’;double-clickitsicontobegintheinstallation.
4. Followtheon-screeninstructionstoperformtheinstallation.

Windows Installation1. Insertyourinstallerdiskintoyourcomputer’sDVD-ROMdrive.
2. Awindowshouldopendisplayingthecontentsof thedisk. If thiswindowdoesnotappearautomatically,youcanmanuallynavigatetothediskusingWindowsExplorer.

Connecting your Scarlett 2i2
IMPORTANT:BeforeyouconnecttheScarlett2i2toyourcomputer,pleasecompletethesoftwareinstallationaccordingtothe
instructionsabove.Thiswillensurethatthehardwareusesthecorrectdrivers,andwillpreventunexpectedbehaviour.
The Scarlett 2i2 has a single USB 2.0 port (on the rear panel). Once the software installation iscomplete,simplyconnecttheScarlett2i2toyourcomputerusingtheUSBcableprovided.(NotethatScarlett2i2isaUSB2.0deviceandthustheUSBconnectionrequiresaUSB2.0-compliantportonyourcomputer.ItwillnotoperatecorrectlywithUSB1.0/1.1ports.)
Audio Setup in Cubase LE (or your other DAW)TheScarlett2i2iscompatiblewithanyWindows-basedDAWthatsupportsASIOorWDMandanyMac-basedDAWthatusesCoreAudio.Afterinstallingthedriversandconnectingthehardware,youcanstartusingtheScarlett2i2withtheDAWofyourchoice.SteinbergCubaseLEisincludedontheScarlett2i2ResourcesDVDtoallowyoutogetstartedifyoudonotalreadyhaveaDAWapplicationinstalledonyourcomputer.ToinstallCubaseLE,locatethefileStart CenterontheDVD,double-clickitandfollowtheon-screeninstructions.OperatinginstructionsforCubaseLEarebeyondthescopeofthisUserGuide,buttheapplicationincludesafullsetofHelpfiles.

Example of UsageTheScarlett2i2isanexcellentchoiceforseveraldifferentrecordingandmonitoringapplications.Sometypicalconfigurationsareshownbelow.
Connecting a microphone or instrument
ThissetupillustratesthemosttypicalconfigurationforrecordingwiththeDAWonyourMacorPC.Inthiscase,youmightrecordguitarthroughInput1andvocalsthroughInput2intoCubaseLE,whilemonitoringtheDAWplaybackviaheadphonesorloudspeakers.
ThefrontpanelinputsocketsareNeutrikCombo®type,whichaccepteitheranXLRmaleconnector(youwillfindoneontheendofthemicrophonecablesupplied)ora¼”(6.35mm)jackplug.NotetheScarlett2i2hasno“Mic/line”switch–theFocusritepreamplifierstageisautomaticallyconfiguredforamicrophonewhenyoupluganXLRintotheinput,andforalineorinstrumentwhenyouconnecta jackplug.Set theLINE/INSTswitchnext to thesocket to INST ifyouareconnectingamusicalinstrument (aguitar in theexample)viaanordinary2-pole (TS)guitar jack,or toLINE ifyouareconnectingalinelevelsourcesuchasthebalancedoutputofastagepianoviaa3-pole(TRS)jack.NotetheComboconnectoracceptsbothTRSandTStypesofjackplug.

Recording with a microphoneTheScarlettStudioCM25microphonesuppliedwithScarlettStudioisastudioqualitycondensermicwhichisidealforrecordingvocalsandmostacousticinstruments.ConnecttheCM25tooneoftheScarlett2i2’stwofrontpanelinputswiththecablesupplied.Notethatthecablehasamaleandafemaleconnector;thefemaleendconnectstothemicrophoneandthemaleendintotheScarlett2i2.
Condensermicrophones(alsosometimesreferredtoas“capacitor”microphones)requireasourceofDCpowertooperate.Thisisalmostalwayssuppliedby“phantom”poweringfromthemicpre-amptowhichthemicisconnected(earlyandspecial-purposecondensermicsmighthaveaseparatepowersupply).FortheCM25(oranyothercondensermic)toworkwiththeScarlett2i2,pressthe48Vbuttononthefrontpanel(seefrontpaneldiagramonpage14,item[3]).Werecommendthatyoufollowthefollowingsequence:
• Turntheinputgain[2]tominimum• Connectthemicrophone• Pressthe48Vbutton• Increasetheinputgaintotherequiredlevel
EnablingtheScarlett2i2’sphantompowerapplies48VDCtotheXLRportionofBOTHinputs.Ifyouareonlyusingasinglemicrophone,donotpluganythingelse(likethebalancedoutputofanotheritemofequipment)intotheotherinputwithanXLRconnector.Applying48Vto
theoutputcircuitryofotherequipmentmaypermanentlydamageit.TheotherinputisperfectlysafetousewithaTRSjackplug.
MicrophoneDosandDon’tsAguide tomicrophone technique isbeyond thescopeof thisUserGuide (thoughmanyexcellentbooksonthesubjectareavailable),butifyouarenewtorecordingwithastudioqualitymicrophone,youneedtoobserveafewgoldenrules.
DOuseamicstand.TheCM25hasanindustry-standard5/8”threadedinsertwhichallowsittobemountedonmostmicstands.An3/8”adaptorisincludedtoallowittobefittedtomicstandsthathave this thread size. Inexpensive short, long and boom stands are readily available from musicstores.
DO observe the microphone’s orientation. TheCM25 has a cardioid response pattern; thisbasicallymeansthatithasa“front”anda“back”,and if you point it the wrong way round, it willsoundodd.ThefrontoftheCM25isidentifiedbypresenceoftheScarletCM25logo.
This mark (a cardioid response pattern) identifies the front of the microphone.

DON’Tignoretheroomacoustics.Youprobablywon’thavetheluxuryofarecordingstudio’sperfectacoustics. Be aware of how reverberant the room is. Reverberation is neither good nor bad, butfrequentlyinappropriate!Someinstrumentswillbenefitfrombeingrecordedinareverberantspace,others won’t. A “dead” acoustic is generally better than a “live” one, because reverberation canbeaddedelectronicallyintherecordingprocess,butroomreverberationontherecordingcan’tberemoved.
DON’Tblowintoamicrophonetotestit!Lightlyruborscratchthegrilleinstead.
DOexperimentwithmicrophoneplacement.Rememberyouwillnotonlyberecordingthevocalorinstrument,buttheeffectofthemicrophonepositionrelativetothevoiceorinstrumentaswell,andthiswillbeaffectedbytheroomacoustics.Movingthemicaround,andtryingrecordingsatdifferentdistancesandanglestothesourcewillproducedifferentsoundingresults,someofwhichwillbebetterthanothers.
DOusetheCM25tomicupaguitaramplifierifyouwanttoincludethecontributiontothesoundthattheamplifiermakes.Butbeawarethatveryhighsoundlevelscanbeproducedveryclosetotheloudspeaker,andifyouneedhighvolume,youmaygetabetterresultbymovingthemicawayfromtheamplifier.Also,beawarethatyouwillgetasubtlydifferentsoundifyoupointthemicatthecentreoftheloudspeakerconecomparedtotheedge.
DON’Tforgetthatamicrophoneisutterlyunforgiving–itwillnotonlypickupwhatyouaretryingtorecord,butanyothersoundsourceintheroom,likeaclock,theaircon,heating,orachaircreaking.Youknowhowyoutakethoseholidayphotosofagreatbitofsceneryandit’sonlywhenyoulookatthepictureslaterthatyouseethepowercablesrightacrosstheview?It’sthesamewithrecording.Youmightnotnoticeextraneoussoundsatthetime,butthemicwillandyou’llhearthemontherecording.Toremoveanyunwantedlowfrequencyrumble,itisadvisablethattheHighPassFilter(HPF)onyourDAWchannelisenabled.
Using Direct MonitoringYouwill frequentlyhear the term“latency”used inconnectionwithdigitalaudiosystems. TheScarlett2i2isfittedwitha“DirectMonitoring”option,whichovercomesthisproblem.Setting the frontpanel“DirectMonitor”switch toONwill routeyour inputsignalsdirectly to theScarlett 2i2’s headphone and main monitor outputs. This enables you to hear yourself with zerolatency–i.e.,in“realtime”–alongwiththecomputerplayback.Theinputsignalstoyourcomputerarenotaffectedinanywaybythissetting.
When“DirectMonitoring”issettoON,ensurethatCubaseLE(orotherDAW)isnotsettorouteitsinput(whatyouarecurrentlyrecording)toitsoutput.Ifitis,youwillhearyourselftwice,withonesignalaudiblydelayedasanecho.

Connecting Scarlett 2i2 to headphonesTheScarlettStudiopackageincludesapairofhighqualityheadphones,theScarlettStudioHP60.Theyarelightweightanddurable,andshouldprovecomfortabletowearforextendedperiods.Theheadbandisadjustable.
TheHP60headphoneshavealownoise,oxygen-freecoppercable,fittedwitha¼”(6.35mm)3-pole(TRS)jackplug.ThisshouldbeconnectedtothesocketattherighthandsideoftheScarlett2i2frontpanel(indicatedbya symbol).TheScarlett2i2’sheadphoneoutputis,ofcourse,suitableforusewithothermodelsofheadphones.
Thevolumeintheheadphonescanbeadjustedbytherotarycontrolimmediatelyabovethesocket.
Pleasebeawarethatheadphonesarecapableofgeneratingveryhighsoundpressurelevelsat theear;prolongedexposuretohighsoundlevelsmay impairyourhearing.Neverturnheadphonesvolumeupanyfurtherthannecessary.
Connecting Scarlett 2i2 to loudspeakersThe1/4”jackoutputsontherearpanelcanbeusedtoconnectmonitoringspeakers.Self-poweredmonitors (i.e., typicalcomputerspeakers) incorporate internalamplifiers,andmaybeconnecteddirectly.Larger,passiveloudspeakerswillrequireaseparatestereoamplifier;inthiscase,therearpaneloutputsshouldbeconnectedtotheamplifier’sinputs.

The line output connectors are 3-pole (TRS) ¼” (6.35 mm) jack sockets, and are electronicallybalanced. Typical consumer (hi-fi) amplifiers and small powered monitors will have unbalancedinputs,eitheronphono(RCA)sockets,orviaa3.5mm3-polejackplugintendedfordirectconnectiontoacomputer.Ineithercase,useasuitableconnectingcablewithjackplugsatoneend.
Professionalpoweramplifierswillgenerallyhavebalancedinputs.
