Jerningham Road London SE14 5NY Tel: 020 7652 9510 email: [email protected]Website: www.haaf.org.uk This is my first opportunity to introduce myself as a newly appointed Assistant Principal at Hatcham College. I am very excited to be joining a school that places such a high value on the importance of educaon and I hope to contribute to this ethos during my me here. One the things that aracted me to Hatcham College is a tradional belief in the value of discipline and high expectaons of student behaviour. There is also a very clear vision that extends all the way to the top of the Haberdashers’ Aske’s Federaon; our purpose is to improve the life chances of the young people we are educang. These are very important pillars for the success of any school and I feel privileged to be in a posion to help fulfil these goals. I will be based predominantly at the Jerningham site and I look forward to working with the students and parents of Middle School over the course of this year and beyond. It seems a very poignant me to think about first impressions; not just in light of my arrival here but as we all embark on a new year at school. I am very pleased to report that our new Year 7’s have been making very posive strides in this regard since they joined us a fortnight ago. An overwhelming majority of students have made an excellent start to the year, evidenced in excellent aendance, punctuality and behaviour so far. It makes the staff at Hatcham College very proud to acknowledge the excellent first impression Year 7 are making and we look forward to this connuing as we move through the year. I would extend this sense of appreciaon across Middle School with students in both Year 8 and 9 also making a very posive start to the year. As a new member of the school community I feel well placed to reflect on the impression that students in Middle School are making. I have been very impressed by the conduct of students in lessons and around school. There is a palpa- ble sense of purpose among students who aend school expecng to learn. I have also noted the respect with which a huge proporon of students treat staff in the school; a clear indicaon of the high expectaons that sees the school thrive. This is my first opportunity to
introduce myself as a newly
appointed Assistant Principal at
Hatcham College. I am very excited
to be joining a school that places such a high

that attracted me to

high expectations of
student behaviour. There
is also a very clear vision
that extends all the way
to the top of the

These are very important pillars for the

It seems a very poignant time to think about
first impressions; not just in light of my arrival
This week, students in Year 7 have come to the end of their transition unit. Next, they will next embark on the study of 'Animal Farm' by the acclaimed author George Orwell. Year 8 are continuing their exploration of Edgar
Allan Poe's poems and short stories, whilst also refreshing their understanding of key writing skills. Finally, Year 9 have
begun reading and analysing 'Great Expectations' by Charles Dickens. Their upcoming writing assessment will require them to have a good understanding of the differences between country and city life in Victorian England. A homework will be set on this area of context, but any additional work completed at home will be highly beneficial.
Hatcham's Literary Legends
In order to acknowledge the immense hard-work and effort students put into their studies in English, we are starting a new weekly competition to recognise those who demonstrate a passion and enthusiasm for the subject. Teachers, as well as members of the middle and senior leadership teams, will be nominating students for this new title based their observations during lessons.
This week Year 7 and 8 students have been working on the SMASHfest competition in class and entries are now all in. The researchers will be looking
through the entries and letting us know by the beginning of next week who has been successful and
will be going through to the next stage of the competition.
The Year 9’s have continued with the transition unit and have completed topics on Biomimicry looking at
Nanotechnology, Developments in Microscopes, Glow in the dark matter and Termite mounds. This is all in preparation for their transition assessment at the end of term.
Assessments this term will take place as follows:
Year 7 – 06/10/17 – 1 paper - KS2 – 3 Transition paper
Year 8 – 02/10/17- 06/10/17 – 3 recap papers – Biology, Chemistry and Physics
Year 9 – 12/10/17 (Boys) and 13/10/17 (Girls) – 1 paper – KS3-4 Transition paper
Recommended Reads
All KS3 students are now completing a reading journal during form time each week. Students have free choice on what they read, however, we would like to promote the reading of more challenging texts. Each week, the English department will recommend a text for students to read at home which can also be used alongside their
journal. This week's pick is… ' The Hobbit' by J. R. R Tolkien.
In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.
I have had parents ask me which books to order and get for their
children so I have included ISBN’s below for the books that we use in school:
Year 7 and 8: AQA Activate 1 (ISBN: 978-0-19-840824-6) and Active 2 (ISBN: 978-0-19-840825-3) student books.
Year 9: AQA GCSE Biology (ISBN: 978-0-19-835937-1), AQA GCSE Chemistry (ISBN: 978-0-19-835938-8) and AQA GCSE Physics (ISBN: 978-0-19-835939-5)
There is an exciting STEAM Club enrichment happening this term with Mr Gregan and Mrs Payne in J72 / Art block on Wednesday’s after school open to all Year 7, 8 and 9 pupils.

Pupils in years 7 and 8 have been working on the Arithmetic and Number unit this term. They will be taking their first assessment during the week beginning on Monday, 2nd October. Some pupils may be moving classes based on the outcome of these tests. The GCSE course has begun in Year 9 with the pupils in this year group also studying the Number Unit.
