During George F. Kennan'sambassadorship in 1952, a Secrettechnical surveillancecountermeasures (TSCM) Inspectiondiscovered that the seal contained amicrophone and a resonant cavitywhich could be stimulated from anoutside radio signal.

active only when a radio signal of the correct frequency wassent from an external transmitter.
Sound waves caused the membrane to vibrate, which variedthe capacitance "seen" by the antenna, which inturn modulated the radio waves that struck and wereretransmitted (backscattered modulation).
A receiver demodulated the signal so that sound picked upby the microphone could be heard, just as an ordinary radioreceiver demodulates radio signals and outputs sound.
