• USB 3.1 specification (announced July 2013) absorbed USB 3.0 and added performance boosts to meet requirements for USB storage, display and docking applications

• USB 3.1 Gen 1 (synonymous with USB 3.0)

• Product signals at 5 Gbps

• Market name/certified brand: SuperSpeed USB

• Products signal at 10 Gbps

Power — USB Power Delivery 2.0

• USB has evolved from a data interface to a primary provider of power

• USB Power Delivery specification (and subsequent v2.0 update announced August 2014) provides more flexible power delivery along with data over a single cable

• Voltage, current and direction can be negotiated without changing cable direction

• Higher voltage and current can deliver power up to 100W

• Upper limit bound by international safety requirements

• Manufacturers can implement USB PD on hosts, hubs, cables and devices

• In order to experience the full user benefits of USB PD, the host, device and cable must support USB PD

• There was an industry need for a new connector to meet the demands of emerging computing platforms

• USB Standard-A was too tall and too wide

• USB Micro-B was designed specifically for mobile phones, not robust enough for larger platforms

• Solution: USB Type-C™

• Redesigned the form factor and used the opportunity to overhaul all aspects of USB and future-proof the technology

• Slim and sleek design enables ultra-thin form factors

• Reversible plug orientation and cable direction solves user confusion

• Scalable power and performance capabilities future-proof the technology

• Alternate Modes enable a truly single-cable solution


USB Type-C™ Alternate Modes

• Permits a vendor or standards organization to utilize USB Type-C™ cable and connector and provide additional features

• Requirements for a standardized Alt Mode:

• Execute liaison agreement with USB 3.0 Promoter Group and USB-IF

• Obtain standard or vendor ID (SVID) from USB-IF

• Standardized Alt Modes available today:

• DisplayPort™ Alternate Mode (Developed by VESA, announced Sept. 2014)

• MHL Alternate Mode (Developed by MHL, LLC, announced Nov. 2014)

• USB-IF has defined joint port identification guidelines to ensure consumers can easily recognize what capabilities a USB Type-C™ host or device supports
