Develop a participant screener

Solicit applications

Set up time slots that screened participants can sign up for

Get participants to sign up

Confirm their sign up once they have chosen a slot

Remind them at least 24 hours prior to their session

Prepare waiting area (if needed)

Disable all notifications/distractions on testing device

Make sure testing device is reset to a common state

Make sure participants can find you (address, directions, parking, etc)

Make sure to get all forms signed by every participant before each session

Provide refreshments

Record and/or simulcast every session

Brief and debrief each participant

Measure task completion percentage (per user and per task)

Measure task duration (average, median)

Analyze demographic information

Analyze results of any standardized (briefing, debriefing) questions

Watch every recorded session to take notes, gather quotes, and identify trends

Synthesize notes, quotes, statistics, and your intuition into a detailed analysis of the experiment

Provide actionable recommendations on how to improve product usability

Prepare a report to stakeholders that covers study design, methodology, setup, testing procedure, results, and analysis

Include an executive summary that only covers the high-level details

Work with the product/development team to prioritize findings and recommendations

Anonymize/clean any sensitive data for release as a blog post or white paper

Write and release the blog post or white paper
