PHILOSOPHY
The philosophy fo the USA Jag’ D umline is based on leade ship,
musicianship, teamwo k, p epa ation,
esponsibility and commitment. We st ive to teach and wo k BEYOND
just the d umline. Buying into
and demonst ating these qualities th oughout the enti e season
will be the key to ou success. In addition,
you must have a positive attitude and be able to get along with
othe s.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
PREPARATION
P epa ation efe s to how much and how well you p actice. It also
efe s to whethe you have spent time
eading and studying the enti e packet in detail. You p epa ation
will dete mine how confident you a e
when you play and how well you know the mate ial.

TECHNIQUE
Technique efe s to g ip, st oke, cont ol, and hands. We utilize
a RELAXED and REBOUNDED
philosophy of technique which p oduces a quality sound at all
levels, speeds, mediums, and playing
philosophies that t anscend mo e than just the activity of ma
ching pe cussion (TRANSFER VALUE).
READING
Reading is NOT optional. With the la ge quantity of music that
college d umlines play, the ability to
visually ead and ve bally count hythms as well as unde stand
standa d stickings is equi ed. We will
pe fo m app oximately 50 cha ts including exe cises, cadences,
chee s, stand tunes, p e-game, and
multiple half time shows.
MEMORIZATION
Memo ization demonst ates attitude and confidence. It shows that
a pe son is dedicated to being a pa t of
the d umline and has tho oughly p epa ed. Given that auditions a
e held so close to the beginning of the
Jag’ D umline Camp and USA Ma ching Band Camp, memo ization
becomes even mo e valued.
COLLEGIALITY
Students a e expected to t eat othe students and staff with
espect.
TEAMWORK
A team playe is someone who is not only willing, but eage to do
what is best fo the g oup. Team
playe s emb ace thei ole, ega dless of what section they make,
and they put the inte ests of the
ma ching band and d umline ahead of thei own.
AUDITIONS
Students MUST be en olled as a FULL-TIME student at USA and p
esent a valid JAG ID and copy of
a FALL 20 5 CLASS SCHEDULE at the time of the audition. Each
section will audition togethe as an
enti e ma ching pe cussion section on a otating basis, t ying va
ious playe combinations. Following
that, students will be asked to sight ead and play individually.
Results will be posted at va ious points
du ing the camp. It is highly encouraged that you prepare to
audition on various instruments based
on you expe iences and st engths (i.e. bass d um / f ont
ensemble o cymbals / sna e d um). Students a e
placed acco ding to thei pe sonal st engths and NEEDS of the
section. Be p epa ed to audition on
multiple inst uments within the section. If you a e auditioning
fo the F ont Ensemble, please be
comfo table playing all exe cises/exce pts on ma imba, vib
aphone, and xylophone. If you a e asked to
play something that you have not p epa ed, then do you best. The
staff knows this and is mo e inte ested
in seeing how quickly you lea n, you musical aptitude and most
impo tantly, you ATTITUDE towa ds
doing it.
Students auditioning on bass d um should p epa e multiple pa ts
(#1-5). Cymbal playe s should pick one
of the split pa ts ma ked as A (above the line) and B (below the
line) in the pa ts. The cymbal line
