How did the economy, society, and culture of the south and the west

change after the civil war?

Racism• African Americans– Continued after civil war

• African Americans were given rights (civil and voting rights)– Some African Americans began to leave the South– When blacks moved to the North there was still racism

there– Jim Crow Laws

• Native Americans– Reservations– Boarding schools– Dawes Act (1887)

• Chinese Immigrants– Helped build transcontinental railroad– Criticized as cheap labor– Laws were made that prohibited Chinese Rights– Chinese Exclusion Acts (1882-1943)
