change after the civil war?

Racism• African Americans– Continued after civil war

• African Americans were given rights (civil and voting rights)– Some African Americans began to leave the South– When blacks moved to the North there was still racism

there– Jim Crow Laws

• Native Americans– Reservations– Boarding schools– Dawes Act (1887)

• Chinese Immigrants– Helped build transcontinental railroad– Criticized as cheap labor– Laws were made that prohibited Chinese Rights– Chinese Exclusion Acts (1882-1943)

Homestead Act of 1862

Started settling in the “interior areas” of the country

Passed by Congress May 20, 1862Gave people 160 acres Criteria:• Head of household (male and female)• 21 years of age • Citizen of almost citizen of U.S

Only 40% of population were able to obtain the land

• Build on land • Live on land • Maintain land and 5 years minimum Hard to maintain • 0-20 inches of rain per year • Hard to grow crops and create farm land

American Cattle Industries Cowboys drove cattle from Texas to Canada and Westward to the Rocky

MountainsCattle supplied meat the fed the nation Over 40,000 cowboys – over 9 million miles

End of Era 1881 - last big cattle drive to Dodge City Open range transformed into farmland

Started ranching and farming Makes it easier for cattle to be raised on ranches then being driven
