It is an attribute of God. It is one of His favorite ways to describe Himself. It is unique to Him. We are not born holy, we’re born sinners. To be holy is to be clean, pure, upright, righteous, and without sin. God is Holy, and we are to be holy (I Pet. 1:15-16). How can an unholy person be holy? How can a person be what God is? The answer is that he must be in relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ. He must turn from his sin to God, trusting God to cleanse him and make him holy through the blood of Jesus Christ. It should be the concern of every Christian to live a holy life that reflects the holiness of God. When a Christian fails to demonstrate the holiness of God, the Holy Spirit who lives in him is being grieved and quenched. Moses was a holy man. Yet, there was an occasion in his life when he failed to treat God as holy. In consequence, he was not permitted to enter the Promised Land. Was there some big, gross moral failure that occasioned his treating God as unholy? No. Moses struck a rock instead of speaking to it. In doing so, he failed to treat God as holy. How is that? We know from 1 Cor. 10:4 that the rock represented Christ. Striking the rock was a picture of Christ’s crucifixion for our sin. Striking the rock after it had previously been struck destroyed God’s picture of Christ dying once for sin, never to die again. But how did striking the rock the second time mean that Moses was treating God as unholy? And how did God prove Himself as holy in response, as Numbers 20:13 says that He did? These questions are answered by observing the connection between the thrice repeated refrain “Holy, Holy, Holy” and the following statement “The Almighty” (Rev. 4:8). When God is not trusted as the Almighty, He is not being treated as Holy. He is not being trusted to be the Almighty God when we do anything in independence of Him or when we seek to help Him do what only He can do. Moses said, “We will bring water from the rock.” Really? Only God can bring water from a rock. God proved Himself to be holy when He proved Himself to be Almighty – the One able to do the impossible. We treat God as unholy when we fail to trust in Him completely as the only One who is able, powerful, almighty. Do you want to walk in holiness and reveal the holiness of God? It isn’t simply about turning from the big, gross sins that we think of when we think of what is unholy. It is about living in complete dependence upon God and His power for all of life. When He is my strength, He is made holy. An unholy life is a life that is not utterly dependent upon Him. A life may look very respectable, clean, and even zealous for God. But if it is not a life dependent at its core in all things on Jesus Christ as The Almighty, it is an unholy life and God is not being treated as holy. Is it any wonder that nations legalize what is unholy when both the citizens and the Church fail to live in complete trust (dependence) upon God? The Court’s actions are typically the culmination, not the origination, of a people failing to depend upon God. A self-sufficient people refusing to trust in God as The Almighty in all that they do is an unholy people. A holy God must be the Almighty God. God will prove Himself as Holy. Of that we can be sure. May it be that He does so through us as we live in humble dependence upon Him. Mark Thomas is the second son of the founder of Capernwray, Major W.I. “Holy” is one of those words that though seldom used needs little explanation.

He is not being trusted to be the Almighty God when we do anything in independence of Him or when we seek to help Him do what only He can do.

S t a f f C h a n g e sHerb & Sue Wohlgemut, after 27 years on staff, have left us to be closer to his aging mother in Canada. Herb, Sue, and their kids have been an integral part of the whole ministry here. We thank the Lord for them and for all the ways we have been blessed through them – ways too numerous to count. Herb’s roles have included head of maintenance, Bible school secretary, assistant director, business manager, and teacher. His greatest role, though, has been that of “friend”. If there’s a spiritual gift of being a friend, Herb has it. The Lord has ministered to many through his warmth, encouragement, and faithfulness. Sue has overseen all lifeguard

training for a number of years and their kids have been very involved in camp. Levi continues on maintenance with us. We can’t describe the loss we feel with having to say good-bye to Herb and Sue. But the Lord is good, and we praise Him for the great gift that they have been to us.

We are very grateful to Daniel Cooper for the year that he served here. Daniel was Music Director, taught classes, and helped as an outreach leader. He always made a point to invest and spend time with students. His desire to be a part of the students’ lives was a great example to the rest of the staff. We wish him all the best as he is now studying at CIU.

Jade Hazelwood served for a little over a year as our Camp Secretary and we are very grateful for her. Jade handled her job well and always sought out opportunities to grow in her walk with Christ. She impacted students and staff alike during her time here and we are sad to see her go. Jade is back home in Montana and will be married next summer.

Rebekah Shinkle served as our Housekeeper at His Hill for almost 2 years. We are very grateful for her hard work and handling of such a big job. Beka showed great leadership on workdays and was a blessing to the students and staff. She is now back in Houston preparing for the next step.

A warm welcome to our new staff members!

Kevin & Alina Martin joined staff this August. Kevin grew up in Texas and attended His Hill from 2010-2011. Kevin has enthusiasm and a passion for people that will serve him well as our field representative. We are thankful to have him help spread the word about Torchbearers. Alina is from Ukraine and is leading a weekly discipleship group. She is also plugging in with campus life as much as time allows. We are happy to have them both!

Megan Sypolt is a native of Maryland and joined staff this October. She has come on board as our Camp Secretary. Having served as a Camp Health Officer this past summer, Megan has a head start understanding how camp runs. We are grateful for her desire to serve here and are excited to see how the Lord will use her in the upcoming years.

Olivia Kincheloe is a native of Idaho and also joined staff this October. She completed a first year of Bible School at The Crossing in New Zealand in ‘13-’14 and a second year here at His Hill in ‘14-’15. Olivia is now our Housekeeper. She is a hard worker, has a servant’s heart, and is excited to use her time here investing in the lives of our student’s. We are thankful to have her!

Kateri King is a native of Michigan. Kateri attended school at Capernwray Hall. Currently she is pursuing a nursing degree, but is taking a year to serve here in the kitchen. Kateri enjoys spending time with the students and is a blessing to staff as well. She has been an invaluable asset, filling in wherever she has been needed.

Michael & Brooklynne McCall joined staff in May. Growing up here, Michael has always been involved with summer camp and also completed a second year of school here in ‘09-’10. He will be serving as our Business Manager/IT Guy. His attention to detail and hardworking attitude perfectly fit his new position. Brooklynne has also been involved here in years past as a student (‘08-’10) and summer volunteer. She now heads up a weekly discipleship group, and is intentional about investing in the lives of our girl students. We are thrilled to have them & their adorable son Weston on the Hilltop!

F a l l M i s s i o n T r i p This fall our 55 students, along with 7 staff members, traveled to Eagle Pass, TX to serve with “Mission: Border Hope”, a non-profit service mission. While there, we had the opportunity to serve seven different families by doing home repair/property cleanup. Our days were spent at the worksites doing yardwork, replacing windows, roofing, cleaning, demolition, and construction. Along with working at the sites, students took turns going to the local Food Bank to help organize donated food. In the evenings, we shared dinner together and then spent time playing games, chatting, or enjoying the nearby “Huddle House”. On Wednesday night, everyone attended a service at a local church. It was encouraging to be with other believers and know that even with a language barrier we can encourage one another in the Lord. Through the whole trip, students cheerfully served, even in the mundane tasks. Many of the students shared different ways they were encouraged by fellow students who were simply going about the day. It was a neat testimony to how the Lord can use even simple things to impact another.

N e w B u i l d i n g P r o j e c tOur new dorm is nearing completion, and will hopefully be in use this coming January! We would like to thank all of those who’ve volunteered their time and money for this project and our great maintenance staff/second years for all of their hard work. It is exciting to see more space become available to house students as they learn about the Lord.
