Sir Charles Kingsford Smith –
Australia’s greatest
A national icon to rival Sir
Donald Bradman and Phar
Lap, Sir Charles Kingsford
Smith is unquestionably
Australia’s greatest aviator.
In 2010, some 75 years after
he disappeared over the Bay
of Bengal, Kingsford Smith’s
all-too-brief life has been
honoured with the release
of this outstanding full-
colour Silver Proof.
A ‘pioneer of the skies’
Defined by the same spirit
of adventure as the 19th
century pioneers, ‘Smithy’
was transformed into an
international celebrity after
becoming the first to fly
across the Pacific from the
USA to Australia in 1928.
Subsequently the first to
make a non-stop flight across
the Australia continent,
Smithy was also the first to fly
from Australia to New Zealand
– with both records also set
in 1928.
The first to circumnavigate
the globe in one plane in
1929, and the first to cross
the Pacific from west to east
in 1934, Smithy’s luck finally
ran out whilst attempting to
break the England-Australia
speed record. Taking off from
Allahabad in India aboard
the Lady Southern Cross,
he vanished en route to
Singapore in November 1935.
An exclusive, full-
colour legal tender
tribute…
Continuing his strong
association with official
currency, with Kingsford
Smith found on the first
Australian $20 note, this
unique Tuvalu legal tender
.999 fine Silver Proof forms
a memorable tribute to
Australia’s greatest aviator.

Smithy – official RAM tribute! An official Australian legal tender tribute to Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, this low-mintage $1 type is one of the most sought after issues in the Royal Australian Mint’s Mintmark $1 Series.
Struck to commemorate the centenary of Smithy’s birth – in Brisbane, Queensland on the 9th of February 1897 – this unique type was struck only for the Mintmark Series.
Distinguished by a small portrait of the legendary pilot, this coin was not issued for circulation and will never be found in change. The mintage of the 1997 $1 Kingsford Smith Small Portrait type was a tiny 285,000 – compared to the 24 million mintage of the 1997 Smithy Large Portrait $1 type. Crucial to those keen to assemble a complete $1 set, we have a small number of these official Smithy
commemoratives in stock. In Unc condition, each 25mm Australian legal tender coin is set in an official RAM pack – our choice of Mintmark.

Tiny allocation! Sure to sell out in days!Although we secured as many coins as we could, our allocation of the RAM’s 2010 $1 Brisbane ANDA Show
B Mintmark Silver Proof is tiny – and guaranteed to sell out at speed. And with the Mint MELTING DOWN
those coins not either sold at
the Show or set
aside
for the small dealer allocation, this coin will never be seen again.
This startling news regarding the Mint’s meltdown policy – aimed at guarding the integrity and exclusive nature of Australian Show product – emerged after the first coin in the 2010 Show series was released in Perth. Whatever remained from the 2,000-coin mintage
of the P mintmark $1 went back into the melting pot, and this coin will never be seen in surplus on the secondary market. This new 25mm 11.66g .999 silver Proof, celebrating the 100th anniversary of Australian national coinage and distinguished by a unique B mintmark, has already experienced the same fate – with the actual mintage closed at a tiny 1228 coins.
Housed in an official RAM case within official ANDA Show presentation packaging, complete with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity proclaiming the maximum mintage of 2,000, do not miss the chance to secure this exclusive Australian legal tender coin. As with the P mintmark issue, we will sell out in a matter of days.
RARE PAIR! Mintage spoken for…
Just six in stock!
Distinctive, unique and very exclusive, with the limited edition set at 5,000, this sensational .999 fine silver pair created frenzied demand when unveiled at the World Money Fair in Berlin – in part due to the inclusion of the 2009 Silver Kookaburra.
United with its 40mm 2010-dated successor within an individually numbered World Money Fair pack, the 2009 Silver Kookaburra was
Issued in tiny numbers at the ANDA Show in Canberra in 2006, this tribute to the 40th anniversary of decimal currency is rarely offered – and soaring in market value.

Launched in May, the 2010 $1 Celebrate Australia Brisbane ANDA Show 1oz Silver Proof created predictably fierce demand from Australian collectors. With the mintage of 2,500 fully allocated, and this coin no longer available at the Perth Mint, this will be one of few opportunities to add this sparkling precious metal Proof to your collection.
Like the Melbourne ANDA Show coin at right, the 2010 $1 Brisbane ANDA Show 1oz Silver Proof carries a stunning full-colour interpretation of one of the popular 2009 $1 Celebrate Australia
BU coins. Official Australian legal tender, each 40mm .999 silver $1 coin features a sea turtle and the Queensland Floral Emblem in fully struck-up silver Proof, set against a full-colour depiction of the Gold Coast and a coral reef. Low-mintage Melbourne Magic!
A stunning sequel and must-have partner to the Queensland ANDA Show 1oz Silver Proof, the second issue in this vibrant Perth Mint program was greeted with similar acclaim when unveiled at the recent Melbourne ANDA Show. With the same tiny mintage as the Brisbane issue (a mintage that is now
fully spoken for), the race is on to own this coin – and be one of the privileged few to attempt to assemble this complete, spectacular celebration of Australia. An official Australian legal tender issue, the imposing 40.60mm flan of this limited edition 1oz coin is distinguished by a striking recreation of the Victorian coin in the Perth Mint’s highly popular 2009 Celebrate Australia BU Series. A superb design, particularly fetching when struck to the highest standard, each coin depicts Melbourne’s famous Flinders St Station and the iconic tram in full-colour, united with a
Phillip Island penguin and the state Floral Emblem in fully struck-up silver Proof. Continuing a grand tradition of highly distinctive, extremely exclusive Australian Show products, each coin is housed within official ANDA Show presentation packaging, complete with a
numbered Certificate of Authenticity detailing the extraordinarily low mintage. Guaranteeing a sell-out, just 2,500 examples of the 2010 $1 Celebrate Australia Melbourne ANDA Show 1oz Silver Proof have been struck! With those coins released at the Show snapped up instantly, and attendees of the Show, such as Downies, allowed only the most minuscule of allocations, we highly recommend you get your order in early.

The Fall of the Berlin Wall…
Headlined by a piece of barbed wire AND a genuine piece of rock from the Berlin Wall, this unique presentation represents a sharp insight into the triumphant destruction of one of the most disturbing symbols of Cold War Europe.
Built by East Germany in 1961 to halt the flood of departures to the west, the Berlin Wall was more than a foreboding construction of concrete, steel and barbed wire. It was an oppressive reminder of the fierce struggle between East and West – a symbolic barrier to freedom. Capturing the essence of the divided Cold War world, this affordable set unites the two genuine Berlin Wall artefacts with
a West Germany 1pf coin, an East Germany 1pf coin, as well as an impressive crown-sized medallion. Stunning value at A$19.95, the presence of a piece barbed wire and a piece of rock from the Berlin Wall makes this a must-have for collector and non-collector alike.

Just as important, just as exclusive and just as beautifully designed as its predecessor, offered below, the Perth Mint’s 2010 $1 German Reunification 20th Anniversary 1oz Silver Proof will be just as sought after. With the mintage of the unique Fall of the Berlin Wall tribute smashed by international demand, time is of the essence for those interested in this inspiring new coin. And what a coin it is!
Marking the 20th anniversary of the union of East and West Germany in 1990 – when the German nation was reborn as a single state following 45 years of division after WWII – this unique 40mm commemorative is graced with a brilliant design. Uniting the finest Proof quality with an explosive
burst of full-colour, each coin bears a fully ‘struck up’ design of the Roman Goddess Victory in her chariot – the statue that sits atop the Brandenburg Gate. Contrasting superbly with the glistening surfaces of the 1oz .999 fine silver flan, the recreation of a fireworks display in the national colours of Germany – red, black and gold – makes for a truly eye-catching coin. A legal tender issue of immense quality, and an obvious must-have for those lucky enough to have secured the 2009 $1 Berlin Wall 20th Anniversary 1oz Silver Proof, the Perth Mint is rightly anticipating huge international demand. With our allocation strictly limited, do not miss the chance to guarantee supply of this vibrant commemorative coin at the Official Issue Price.

The last predecimal notes – scarce in this grade…
History, beauty, scarcity, importance…there are many factors behind the ongoing demand for Australia’s final £1 and 10/-. With the notes before you, however, the most enticing characteristic is the near flawless about Uncirculated quality.
Among the most significant types in the
Australian banknote series, the 1961 Elizabeth II Reserve Bank 10/- and £1 were issued for only a few years at the end of the predecimal period. Subject to the highest circulation rates as lower denominations, these historic, short-lived types are desirable in any grade – and a must-have in the superior
quality available here. Part of a recent small hoard find, obviously stashed away soon after issue in the early 1960s, these particular Reserve Bank £1 and 10/- notes are conservatively graded at about Uncirculated. The final predecimal signposts on the road to decimalisation in 1966,
the surprising thing about Elizabeth II notes in the higher grades is that, despite their importance and growing scarcity, they are still available at a value-for-money price. Buy both the Coombs/Wilson 10/- and £1 and save over A$200 OFF current catalogue value!
The £1 notes of the WWII era…
The last predecimal issues, the Coombs/Wilson Reserve Bank £5 and £10 are justly acknowledged as among Australia’s most historically important notes. Not only sought after as a compelling keepsake of a very different Australia, these ‘last-of-their-kind’ notes are also pursued for their rarity in the upper echelons of quality.
Completely redesigned upon Queen Elizabeth’s ascent to the throne, the £1 note of George VI forms a distinctive link with a very different Australia. As scarce as they are historic, the £1 notes of the WWII-era still represent outstanding value-for-money – as illustrated by this affordable George VI £1 signature set.
Indeed, of all Elizabeth II notes, the toughest to source in premium grade are the higher denominations. At the end of predecimal currency in the mid 1960s, the average

With the $1 note about to be replaced, and a full revision of Australian currency believed to be imminent, many collectors set aside Australian paper banknotes in the early 1980s – but seldom in such quantity as found in this hoard. Showing great foresight, one particularly passionate collector managed to compile an amazing stash of banknotes, with the 1983 $2 Johnston/Stone, 1983 $5 Johnston/Stone, 1985 $10 Johnston/Fraser, 1985 $20 Johnston/Fraser OCR-B and 1983 $50 Johnston/Stone all set aside in official, original RBA bundles. Retained by the original collector for well over two decades, until purchased by Downies early this year, this is the first time these notes have been offered to the collector market. As they were discovered in original RBA bundles of 100, every note is naturally in strictly Uncirculated condition. However, more than just a cast-iron guarantee of the best possible quality, our acquisition of original bundles allows us to present each note as a Consecutive Pair! Offered at below market price as individual pairs, the complete $2 to $50 Consecutive Pair set demand serious consideration at a whopping A$628 below the current catalogue value!

The King of Australian Coins!
A rarity
of world
standing,
the 1930
Penny is
Australia’s
most desirable
coin – regardless
of the grade. An
irresistible opportunity
for the serious
collector or astute
investor, we have
an example of this
legendary copper
coin in better-than-
usually-seen good Fine
condition with minor
reverse rim bruises!
Issued virtually by
accident, with the
small number of coins
struck in 1930 during
die testing thought to
have been released
with the 1931 Penny
issue, the 1930 Penny
is rightly recognised as
the ultimate collector
acquisition. The King of
Coins, it is Australia’s
primary numismatic
icon – the coin every
collector would love to
own. To many today,
however, the collector
importance and
illustrious Depression
Era heritage of this key
rarity is irrelevant. It is
viewed purely as a wise
portfolio diversification,
with investors joining
collectors in a fierce
battle for the 1,500
coins known to exist.
Market forces dictate
that increased demand
on a dwindling supply
can only result in rising
value. Highly sought
after in any grade, the
past decade or so has
seen the price of a
1930 Penny skyrocket.
A Fine example, valued
at A$8,750 in 1997,
now catalogues at
A$30,000, whilst this
iconic rarity in Very
Fine has soared from
A$17,000 to a current
price of A$50,000 in
the same period.
A mouth-watering
opportunity to dine
at the head table of
Australian numismatics,
immediate action is a
must – especially at
this price! In good Fine
condition, the presence
of some minor rim
bruising on the reverse
means we can present
this iconic rarity at well
below market price for

Sure to be among the hottest releases for the year, the inevitably huge demand for this unprecedented Australian legal tender type will, of course, be driven by the stunning Roo at Sunset design. Nominated by Krause for the Peoples Choice Coin of the Year Award,
and commanding the attention of collectors worldwide, this entrancing motif has been the key to demand for some of Australia’s most sought after numismatic issues. The 2007, 2008 and 2009 Roo at Sunset Gold Proofs all sold out at speed, and, issued at A$365, catalogue at A$2,000, A$1,500 and A$1,100 respectively. Fred Hollows – a truly inspirational Australian
Giving the gift of sight to many thousands of people around the world, leading
ophthalmologist Fred Hollows (1929-93) was and remains a truly inspiring figure. Now enshrined in Australian legal tender, the RAM could not have made a finer choice for the subject of the third coin in the Inspirational Australians Series.
A passionate believer in ending the economic disparity between the First and Third Worlds, Hollows devoted his life to providing aid to
the underprivileged and neglected elements of society, with his work in indigenous communities being particularly noteworthy.
Established in 1992, the Fred Hollows Foundation continues to provide assistance to the disadvantaged and the poor, and, with his impact felt as far afield as Nepal, Eritrea and Vietnam, it is thought that around one million people worldwide can now see as a result of Fred Hollows’ work.More than just a fine tribute to this pioneering medico, this one-year-only al-br $1 type is also a must-have for traditional collectors. Burke & Wills – 150 years on
With the Burke & Wills 150th anniversary commemorations in full swing, and an array of events planned for the next couple of months, now is the perfect time to play a part in one of the most important, most celebrated chapters of Australian history.
Genuinely eye-catching in either Proof or Unc quality, each 2-coin set unites a 20c and a $1 commemorative. Portraying John King – only man of the party to journey to the Gulf of Carpentaria and make it back alive – and
Burke and Wills setting out in 1860 respectively, neither Australian legal tender type will be issued for circulation. With both coins also absent from the 2010 Proof and Mint Sets, these sets are therefore crucial to anyone seeking to maintain
a complete collection. Ensuring these coins are amongst
the lowest mintage decimal types, the RAM has restricted the Proof Set mintage to just 25,000, with a mere 40,000 Unc sets issued!

A Test for the collector…
Unique $1 DBP Test Note!
Rare Error Test Note type!
Radical mis-cut Error!
With the existence of the 1997 $5 Macfarlane/Evans Test Note not revealed until five years after issue, it can be a real challenge for the
collector to acquire this key type in strictly Uncirculated quality – as presented here
It was in 2002 that the Reserve Bank of Australia confirmed the existence
of a very limited $5 ‘Test’ print-run. Instigated to trial new inks in the $5, and recognised by prefixes ranging from AN97 to DN97, only 300,000 such notes were issued. With a huge percentage of the tiny print-run lost, destroyed or well circulated, it stands to reason that the number of premium grade examples still in existence is very low.
Distinguished by prefixes from AP – the third prefix in the series – to CS97, we have just a few of these distinctive types in stock – all in pristine Uncirculated condition.
A unique and interesting variety from Australia’s decimal paper note series, the $1 DBP Test Note is important, scarce and highly sought after – especially in premium grade Uncirculated quality, as presented here.
In an attempt to determine the distribution, and speed of circulation,
of Australian banknotes, the RBA released one million $1 notes into the economy the mid-1970s as a ‘test’ run. Distinguished by the prefix ‘DBP’ – for a long time erroneously believed to stand for Durable Banknote Paper – a vast majority of these Test notes were well used before this unique type was discovered. Of the tiny print run of just one million notes, a
very small percentage remains in high grade. Your chance to secure this genuinely scarce note variety in the highest possible quality, we have the $1 Knight/Wheeler DBP Test Note in Uncirculated condition.
Seldom seen on the market in top grade, this distinctive 1997 Macfarlane/Evans $5 is one of few known Error types from the $5 Test print-run outlined above.
Known as a Dry Ink Transfer Error, types such as this 1997 $5 Macfarlane/Evans Test Note are caused by the use of too much ink in printing. The result is that, even after the notes have dried, the design
Although NPA quality control is extremely rigorous, mistakes still get through the system – as illustrated by this radically mis-cut 1997 $5 Macfarlane/Evans Test Note!
Taken from the 1997 $5 Test print-run, and never before offered by Downies, this dramatic Error variety has been mis-cut by several millimetres. Obvious to the
of one note is transferred onto the design of another when pressed together in NPA bundles of 100. The images above clearly show the dramatic ‘ghosting’ effect that defines a Dry Ink Transfer Error. Highly sought after, like all Error varieties, and especially desirable due to its ‘Test note’ status, there is no way of telling how many examples of this
eye, the error is most clearly demonstrated by the proximity to the top of the note of the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, and large gap below, as well as the significant difference in the size of the security bands found at the top and bottom of the note. A rare, distinctive blunder from NPA – and particularly sought after as
Dry Ink Transfer Error note there are in existence. As illustrated by its infrequent appearances on the market, however, it is unquestionably scarce in strictly Unc quality as here.

this lovable dog an ideal

Defending the nation
One of Australia’s
most essential canine workers,
the Beagle plays a key role in protecting the nation from diseases and pests through its employment by AQIS – the Australian
Quarantine & Inspection Service.
Appropriately, the Beagle is the focus of this official PNC tribute to the 100th anniversary of Australian quarantine regulations – being featured upon the cover, on the Australia Post stamp AND on the RAM’s
‘not-issued-for-circulation’
25mm al-br $1 coin.
Still fantastic value, especially as the low-mintage $1 coin (just 51,694 struck!) is a must-have for a complete collection, this PNC forms a fitting complement to the new 2010 $1 Labrador Retriever 1oz Silver Proof.
