U.S. History Parent Guide (11 th Grade) Unit 1 Connecting Themes in U.S. History Unit Focus This unit is designed to teach the themes used in the course: beliefs and ideals; conflict and change; culture; distribution of power; individuals, groups, and institutions; location; movement/migration; production, distribution, and consumption; rule of law; and technological innovation. Concepts Explored Beliefs and ideals of a society influence the social, political, and economic decisions of that society. Conflict between or within societies, results in change in the societies. Culture of a society is the product of the religion, beliefs, customs, traditions, and government of that society. Distribution of power in government is a product of existing documents and laws combined with contemporary values and beliefs. Actions of individuals, groups, and/or institutions affect society through intended and unintended consequences. Location affects a society’s economy, culture, and development. Unit 3 Creation of the United States

Unit Focus This unit examines the conflict and change associated with the American Revolution, including the ideological background of the Declaration of Independence. Through the conceptual lens of beliefs and ideals, the unit focuses on early American documents including the Articles of Confederation, Constitution, and the U. S. Bill of Rights. The unit ends with the Presidencies of George Washington and John Adams, which along with the contributions of early American leaders such as Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and Alexander Hamilton, show how individuals, groups, and institutions affect societal change.

Early American documents: Articles of Confederation, Constitution, and the U.S. Bill of Rights

In this unit, students will analyze territorial and population expansion, economic growth, and the impact of these elements on the local, regional, and national levels in the United States during the first half of the nineteenth century.

Unit Focus This unit examines the causes and effects of the conflict and change of the American Civil War. It also provides a rich field for examining the role of individuals, groups and institutions in shaping history and will also show how production, distribution and consumption help the economy to thrive as industry supports the war. The unit concludes with a focus on the beliefs and ideals of political reconstruction of the South and the struggles of newly freed African-Americans.

The Changing Role of Government

Unit Focus This unit examines the Great Depression and focuses on under consumption, stock market speculation, and the impact of the drought in regards to the Dust Bowl. Actions taken by Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Congress are also addressed within this unit. The impact of Individuals, Groups, and Institutions and Conflict Resolution will also play a role in the United States during the Civil Rights Era of the United States. Students will also explore the Civil Rights Movement in this unit.
