ATLAS PROJECT DIRECTIONSEach day at the beginning of class we will be working on the Atlas project. We will focus on one state per day and learn about information and historical events related to that state. In class your responsibility is to copy all of the information provided about the state, the historical event (if you have not researched your own), and shade in the state on the map. This information will be on the overhead screen in the front of the classroom at the beginning of class. Note that you must come prepared with your own historical event each day in order to receive full credit for this project.  Your ongoing homework assignment is to research and learn about a historical event related to the state of the day and come prepared with that information for that state. The historical event must be significant and cannot be about sports or entertainment. In order to receive credit for the event you must be able to explain the event if called upon to do so in class. In addition, you may not copy events from other people. In other words, your work and research must be your own.

ATLAS PROJECT RESEARCH TIPSThere are several approaches that work well for finding historical events for each state. Some options you may want to try include the Internet, books, or other people.

Some good Internet sites include:1. www.theus50.com

(Select your state)2. www.google.com

(Enter the name of the state and history) example- California history (Enter the name of the state and timeline) example- California timeline(Enter the name of the event you have in mind) example- The Gold Rush

Some good books to use include:

1. The U.S. History textbook and other books we use in class.(Anything we learn about in class this year is fair game for the Atlas.)

2. Encyclopedias(Wikipedia, and encyclopedia books are great sources.)

Some other people you can get help from:

1. Mr. Mercer(Suggestions/previews will be given for each state the day before it is due as homework.)

2. Other teachers(They may give you some ideas about events too.)

3. Parents(You may be surprised about how much knowledge they have.)
