showed that the colonists could hold their own against the British and this was not going to be a quick war

October 1777The British suffered embarrassing

defeats in New England and planned to strike back

British wanted to cut New England off form the rest of the colonies and attack from three directions but two groups were late

Greatest win to that point during the war for the Patriots

Led to an increase in foreign support for the Patriots

South Patriot plan was to break into 3 lines

October 1781Lord Cornwallis decided to take

Virginia – costly mistakeGeorge Washington and French

commanders surrounded Cornwallis and British military on the peninsula of Yorktown

Cornwallis surrenders and the war is over

Great Britain recognized the US as independent
