US Back-to-School Report #4: Top Trends for 2016 According to Trendalytics, a merchandise intelligence platform trackingtrends,searchesfor“backtoschool”accelerateinJulyandpeakinAugust.Such searches are up from last year: the week of July 10, 2016, Googlesearchesfor“backtoschool”wereup37.5%comparedtothesameweekin2015.Thisyear’smust-havetrendsforschoolrangefrombomberjacketsto sneakers, denim to athleticwear, and embellished backpacks to do-it-yourself(DIY)schoolsupplies.
Themajorityofpeopleheadingbacktoschool this fallareGenZers,whoplaceagooddealof importanceontheirappearancesandtheirability tostandoutfromthecrowd.Thelatestfashiontrendsallowforablastfromthepast—intheformofvintageT-shirts,athleticwearandsneakers—tobepersonalizedwithpatches, fringeandpins thatsuit the individual styleofthe2016GenZer.

Denimjacketsarealsotrendingthisseason,withonlinesearchesforthemup 31% compared to last year. Particularly trendy are theways inwhichdenim jackets can be personalized with pins, patches and customembroidery.Thesedenimstaplesarebeingpairedwithevenmoredenim,asdenimshirtsanddressesarealsoverypopularthisseason.
In line with our opinion that athleisure is here to stay, retailers such asAmericanEagleOutfittershavehighlightedtheireffortstoadoptfabricstogivedenimnewlifewithintheathleisuretrend.AmericanEaglesaidthatitsawdenimoutperformknittopsandaccessoriesinthesecondquarter.Thecompany’s back-to-school and fall collections include an expansion of itssignature Denim X and Flex jeans, which are said to offer “360-degreestretch.”AmericanEaglenoted in its second-quarterearnings call that itsbottomsbusinesswasstrongerthanever.
Abercrombie & Fitch launched a campaign based solely on denim thisquarter, called “The Blues,” and the company also integrated “Epic Flex”materials into itsHollisterbrand jeans for a stretchier,more comfortablefit. The company launched an additional campaign for back-to-schoolcenteredonitsnewEpicFlexjeans.
Gap Inc., inspired by the success of its Athleta brand, introduced stretchfabricacrossall threeof itsmainbanners (BananaRepublic,GapandOldNavy),referringtothemoveas“adirectliftfromtheactivespace.”
BomberJacketsaHotItem
One of fall’s biggest trends is the bomber jacket. Originally created formilitary pilots, bomber jackets recently gainedmainstream cultural cloutafter they were featured on runways by Raf Simons, Helmut Lang andVetements and were then quickly adopted by celebrities such as KanyeWestandRihanna.
Trendalytics says that, based on social media buzz and online searchpatterns over the past six months, bomber jackets are a growing trend.Online searches for the jackets areup148%compared to last year. Fast-fashion companies H&M, Topshop and Forever 21 now offer affordableversionsthataredestinedtobesomeoffall’smostpopularitems.
Whilebackpackshavealwaysbeenaback-to-school staple, theyarenowconsidered to be a growing trend, according to Trendalytics. Onlinesearches for backpacks are up 15% compared to last year, as fashionbrands and socialmedia influencers have been sporting themoutside ofschoolinleather,satin,velvetandembellishedversions.
