Step 1: Open a new document

Step 4: Create a new layer to put your photos on

Window -> Layers

Illustrator automatically gives you a “Layer 1”. The new layer is automatically named “Layer 2”

InDesign automatically gives you a “Layer 1”. The new layer is automatically named “Layer 2”

PhotoSHop automatically gives you a “Background” layer. The Vector Smart Object layer was generated when the photoWas ‘placed’ in the document. The layer above was generated whenThe rectangle was drawn. “Layer 1” is the name of the new layer.

Step 5: ‘Crop’ photos (i.e. use part of an image)

You can create a mask to cover the portion of the image you don’t want to see

You can create a frame that the portion of the image you want to see shows through

You can select the portion of the image you want to use and paste that portion where you want it to be.

Preview – using part of an image

Mask part of an image in Illustrator by creating a “clipping mask”

1. Put an image in your Illustrator file by selecting File -> Place

2. Create a shape (probably a rectangle, but it could be anything) – make it cover the part of the image that you want to keep (it doesn’t matter what color the shape is)

3. Select both the shape and the image

4. Object -> Clipping Mask -> Make

5. You can undo this with Object -> Clipping Mask -> Release

Place a photo inside a frame

1. Use the ‘rectangular frame tool’ to draw a box where you want your photo to be

2. Choose File -> Place to bring in the photo you want to use

3. Drag the edges of the box to adjust the size of the frame

4. Use the select tool to grab the photo and drag it where you want it to be…or to resize the photo

1. File -> Open to open an image file

2. Use the “rectangular marquee tool” to select the portion of the photo you want:Copy it (Edit -> Copy)

3. Paste it in the brochure file (it will automatically create a new layer)

4. Make it the size you want (Edit -> Transform -> Scale) to get the corner boxes that let you do this

5. If it isn’t the right size, use the “eraser tool”

Paste in part of a photo from another file and tweak it

Step 6: Aligning elements

Step 7: Draw the ‘chevron’ shape in the banner

Use the pen tool and click 3 times to make the 3 points:

To make the line thicker,Window -> StrokeThen modify the width:

Use the eyedropper toolTo match the color in the model

Click on the fill/stroke boxesto apply color to the stroke rather than the fill:

Use the direct select tool to graph and reposition the three line points (it can be tricky to be sure a single point is selected)

To get make the ends look right, first turn the line into a shape with:Object -> Path -> Outline stroke:

Finally… use the directSelect tool to square off the ends the way they are in the brochure:

Step 8: Add text – making the font & size match the document

PREVIEW: All 3 apps have a “text tool”, and they work similarly…but not identically

1. Use the text tool to type the text

2. Use the direct select tool to select the text you just typed

3. Change the font with Type -> Font (Cambria italic is somewhat close, in this case). Note that the name of the font, the type and the size appear at the top of the page:

5. Change the color (one way is to use the color selection boxes that also appear at the top of the page).

1. Use the rectangle tool to create a box for the text.

2. Use the text tool to type the text inside of the box

3. Use the direct select tool to select the text you just typed

5. Change the size by choosing Type -> Size…If the box you had created isn’t large enough to contain the larger type, you’ll see a red ‘plus’ symbol. To fix that, grab the corners of the box to resize it.

6. To change the color, first use the text tool to drag across the text to select it…then double-click on the color box in the tool panel to bring up the Color Picker dialog box and select a color.

4. Type the text

5. Drag across the text with the text tool to select it.

6. Use the options in the bar at the top to change the font, font type and size
