brought us the book. Togara represented Zimbabwe at the Poetry Parnassus in London, ‘the biggest gathering of poets in world history’ where he read at the gala event in the Royal Festival Hall with other famous poets. Poetry Parnassus was part of the Cultural Olympiad that preceded the 2012 Olympic Games. John is an English teacher in Bulawayo and both are extensively published. It is interesting when reading their poems which are interspersed throughout the book that it is not always clear on first reading as to who wrote what. Two very different people united by place and birth but especially united by the English language which gives so many of us a common heritage. They both write quite beautifully so hopefully some bits and pieces will filter through to the Stoep! Great hope for the future these two men.
Birds, Beasties, Trees, Updates and Important Things.
Did you know? Temminck's Courser is at-tracted to burnt out areas and its eggs are almost completely black to blend in with the surroundings. (Photographed in Bryanston in 1960).
Have you ever wondered why a bird does not fall off its perch even when it is sleeping?
Watch the yellow tendon in the above illustration. As the bird lowers itself on the branch, the tendon shortens and tightens the bird's grip on the branch. As long as the bird maintains this squatting position it will not fall off its perch. (Drawings by Wim Spronk Jr ) .
This young Diederik Cuckoo was caught in early May 1958. Raised by a Bishop Bird it had never known its parents who by this time had already flown back to Central Africa. Yet in a few days time it would follow the same route the parents took on their migratory flight.

Dear Friends
My wife berated me for not acknowledging all you wonderful women out there for Woman’s Month so now I mustn’t forget that in September we celebrate Spring, Heritage Day and Arbor Day! When we still lived in Dainfern trees were in fact planted for Arbor Day and I’m sure they still are. Keep up the good work it is so important to respect both nature and our heritage.
Sitting on the Stoep“Whoopsie” said my wife yesterday as the lid on the pot started rattling on the boil and she jumped up to turn the stove down. I said, “You said whoopsie?” She replied, “Did I?” This same conversation occurred in the movie ‘Nottinghill’ when Hugh Grant followed Julia Roberts over the railing fence into a Chelsea garden. He said, “Whoopsie” And she said, “You said whoopsie?” And he replied, “Did I?It sort of stuck in my head, this strange English expression; and the same sequence occurring in our home yesterday. Comes from childhood from being tossed around in games with our parents and friends and “Whoop se daisy’ I suppose? Perhaps that’s why I remarked on it yesterday when oddly enough I got the same sequence!I suppose those expressions learned in childhood become ingrained in our psyche or something and come out almost subconsciously. Strange people these English speaking South Africans aren’t we? Sometimes more English than the English? So, I’m having an English moment; an English moment in South Africa; an English moment in Southern Africa with a book of poetry from Bulawayo. My ‘whoopsie’ wife grew up in Bulawayo and an old school friend brought us a book of poetry by two poets – John Eppel and Togara Muzanenhamo. This was a follow up visit from a year ago when the old school friend brought a lovely calendar with magnificent photographs of the Matopos each with an appropriate verse by John Eppel. Brenda noted my love of poetry so

The White Browed Sparrow Weaver (page 4) is a common bird in some of the drier parts of our country. It builds an untidy nest (as shown) and the entrance always faces west. Would this be to catch the last rays of the setting sun?Wim’s informative ‘Did you Know’ series contributes so much to our Birds and Beasties section. Thank you. Isn’t there somebody out there who could give us some ‘beastie’ information? Then there is this very interesting information emailed by Eco Solutions, quote “While chatting to a client on Monday in Waverley Johannesburg she informed us that she had seen a Bateleur (Terathopius ecaudatus) in her garden a few days before. We were skeptical to begin with and thought it was most probably a Juv. African Harrier Hawk (Polyboroides typus). Yesterday morning she sent us a picture. Wow! It is indeed a Juvenile Bateleur. According to SABP 1 and 2, a Bateleur sighting has never been recorded in Johannesburg. What a nice first!” unquote.
Nature’s True Colours It’s spring so we are looking forward to some bright happy colours – do your best! This month Loke managed to win the prize. Well done!
Crackerjack Brown-Hooded Kingfisher
“Your hyperbolic beak has mesmerised
you – you gaze past poems, past the abyss
of waters. You have been immobilized
by instinct, by a chronic state of bliss.
And
…….Impossible beak,
orange legs, reddish feet glued to a tree;
Dickensian eyebrows, unnerving shriek
shadowed by a gentling, ‘pity for me’.”
John Eppel
from ‘Textures’ poems by John Eppel & Togara Muzanenhamo (’amaBooks 2014)
Just such a Brown-Hooded Kingfisher used to come and visit us on the small tree just outside our back door onto the little stream and valley in Galloway so I had to quote from part of this poem. Some moments and pictures get etched into the forever in one’s mind. He was such a polite little fellow!
I know we are very lucky! Regards from Tony Borderfor the Nature Association

What is Land Use Management?
Property MattersAll your property related questions answered
Every property has a set of regulations to control development which is determined by the zoning of the property. Property zoning is set out in the applicable Town Planning Scheme for different areas, which determines possible land use, floor area, coverage, building lines and parking provisions.
It is important to establish which scheme applies to which area, as the specific requirements of the schemes differ.
In addition to zoning regulations, development is also controlled by conditions of title, as set out in the Title Deed of each property, which can restrict the way in which a property may be developed.
The National Building Regulations and Building Standards Act (Act 103 of 1977), the Public Health Bylaws and various other Municipal Bylaws also regulate development. Any development contrary to legislation and regulations can result in prosecution.
HOW TO ESTABLISH WHAT DEVELOPMENT IS ALLOWEDThe zoning regulations as well as the correct property description, and property size, can be obtained from the GIS information counter at the Metro Centre in Braamfontein.
Details of restrictions set out in the Title Deed can be established by obtaining a copy of the Title Deed from the Deeds Office, or from the Bank that holds the mortgage bond.
Building Control can provide information regarding the National Building Regulations and any information on bylaws.
TO CHANGE ZONING REGULATIONS AND/OR REMOVE RESTRICTIVE CONDITIONS OF TITLE Changing the regulations or amendment of the title conditions, requires an application and a formal procedure. There are numerous kinds of applications, it is therefore advisable to consult a professional town planning consultant, a land surveyor or a lawyer.
Proposals to develop agricultural land portions or small holdings require more than changes in zoning and removal of restrictive conditions. These are, effectively, proposals to establish townships, which require professional expertise.
Consent Applications are usually less complex and may not require a rezoning or removal of restrictive conditions but nevertheless need the Council's permission and need to be legally and technically correct.
TIMELINE FOR APPLICATIONS TO BE PROCESSEDDepending on the type of application, obtaining a decision may take as long as 12 months. After the application is submitted, it is circulated to relevant Council departments and agencies for comment. Then processed by a planning officer who makes a recommendation as to whether the application should be approved or not. If the official opposes the application and where interested parties have lodged objections, a Tribunal Hearing is scheduled. The applicant, objectors and Council officials are then given the opportunity to argue the case. If any party is dissatisfied with the Tribunal's decision, they may appeal to the Provincial authority, (known as the Township Board)
The LAND USE MANAGEMENT PLANNERS The planner on duty can give you further information regarding your specific land use query and is available on weekdays from 08h00 to 13h00, Area B (Sandton Area) 011 407 6244.

Spring Up Your Home!As the weather gets warmer, most homeowners are ready to wash away the winter blues and prepare for spring. The warming sunshine and refreshing rain causes the trees to start budding and flowers to bloom. But before you get caught up in landscaping and gardening work, here are a few tips to spruce up your home and also get it into the vibrant mood of springtime.
Interior Ideas
continue on page 18
Fresh Paint! The easiest way for a noticeable change in a room is to apply a new fresh coat of paint. Spring is a season of bright, vibrant colours as well as pastels. It is a great
exercise to get inspiration from Mother Nature. Some people will stick with a neutral wall colour and introduce splashes of aqua blues and crisp greens. Even if you find a crazy colour that you love, try just painting one wall and

see how it fits with your home. You may be surprised how a different colour on the walls can make your old furniture look new again.
In addition to the walls, spring is a great time to put a fresh coat of paint on your front door. Even if you do not wish to change the colour, a new coat of paint on the front door and frame will definitely brighten up the entry. Remember to clean your door first to rid it of the dust and grime that gathers throughout the seasons. It is also a good time to check the seals on your doors and windows. Since small cracks can allow heat in and out, replacing the weather stripping will reduce your energy bills all year long.
Lighter Fabrics & Furniture
Although that old, plush sofa is so comfortable, it doesn’t quite promote springtime. Try bringing in outdoor furniture to add a bit of bounce and texture to a boring room. A simple way to change up your couch is with a slipcover. Bright and colourful patterned scatter cushions are perfect for achieving a light and airy feeling. Additionally, they can
be stored for future seasons when fall comes around. Swap out woolly, winter rugs for something lighter or just simply remove them. Replace your bulky winter linens with spring bedding and window treatments with sheer curtains. Open up those blinds and curtains to let the sun shine inside. By eliminating the heavy materials from the room, you will find that your home automatically becomes lighter and brighter.
Change Up Your Wall and Table Decor
By the end of winter, most homeowners are tired of seeing the same old stuff on the walls and tables. Spring is the perfect time to switch up your decorations to create a newer, fresher feeling. Try separating your art into piles for the summer and winter seasons. To add more natural light to your home, hang mirrors that will reflect the sunshine streaming from the windows. Many people get creative with their spring decor. For example, a terra-cotta pot can be used inside as a utensil holder or fruit bowl to portray springtime on your kitchen counter. Other items like colourful lamps, vases and spring-scented candles can

add vibrancy to any table. Swapping out accessories will help breathe new life into your home.
The best way to really freshen up a room is to display fresh flower arrangements. Daffodils, tulips and other early blooming bulbs add lots of life and colour to a dull room. Place a side table with a lovely bouquet of flowers next to the front door so it will be the first thing guests see when they enter. When creating a fresh arrangement of flowers, pick a colour scheme that will enhance the surrounding area. After all, nothing says spring more than fresh flowers.
Spring Cleaning, of Course! In addition to the normal cleaning out of the garage, remember to get to those hardly thought about areas of your home. Give your floors a good cleaning by moving the furniture and vacuuming under those areas. Take the rugs and carpet runners outside for a good washing and vacuum the carpet where they were placed. Wash the curtains and other window treatments to get rid of dust. Clean out the refrigerator and cabinets to make space for fresh items and remove clutter. It is also a great time to clean and/or replace the stove-hood filter, service the air conditioner, etc.
So if you are ready to give up the winter sentiment, open up those windows and let the fresh, spring air sweep away
the stale atmosphere. Relax on your favourite wicker chair, feel the breeze from the sheer curtain blowing your way and plan your next task for inviting spring into your life.
Happy Spring 2015!

Oregano is a wonderful perennial culinary and medicinal herb. It has long been recognised as one of the"functional foods" for its nutritional, anti-oxidants and disease preventing properties. The herb, whose name means "delight of the mountains" in Greek, is native to the Mediterranean region.
Botanically, it belongs to the mint (Lamiaceae) family, in the genus; Origanum, and is known scientifically as Origanum vulgare.
The plant is a small shrub, growing up to 75 cm in height with multi-branched stems covered with small greyish-green oval leaves and small white or pink flowers.
Oregano is widely popular in Greek and Italian cuisines. Its leaves have a characteristic aromatic, warm, and slightly bitter taste. Their intensity varies; however, a good-quality oregano is so strong that it almost numbs the tongue.
Cooking with OreganoIn order to keep the fragrance and aromatic flavour intact, oregano leaves are generally used just before preparing recipes. Here are some serving tips:Oregano herb is widely used as a "spice." It is principally employed in the cuisines as a seasoning to enhance the flavour. It has been used in preparation of many popular dishes in Mediterranean and Mexican cuisine since ancient times. Along with other spicy items, it is being used as a flavouring agent in the preparation of pizzas, chicken, fish, and meat dishes. It has also been used in the preparation of soups, omelette, sauces, and pickling.Freshly chopped oregano leaves is a great addition to green/fruit salad.
We at Elia Organic Trading add about 1-2 teaspoons of freshly chopped oregano to our smoothies too.
Medicinal usesThe leaves and flowering stem of the oregano plant have antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, increase bile secretion, diaphoretic, expectorant, stimulant, and mildly tonic propertiesOregano decoction is taken by mouth for the treatment of colds, influenza, mild fever, indigestion, stomach upsets, and painful menstruation.Thymol has been found to have anti-septic, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal activities.
Safety profileOregano oil extracted from the herb parts may cause skin and mucus membrane irritation and hence, avoided in aromatherapy.

Tennis Update
The Joy of Tennis
Armstrong Tennis Academy (Pty) Ltd • Duane Armstrong 082 456 5441 Professional Tennis Coaching from Beginners
to Top National Players
One of the beauties of tennis is that it is enjoyed by all ages and levels and walks of life. I have always loved seeing youngsters learning to play, club social where the adults are playing to win and having fun. Most impressively the 65 years and older playing and how competitive they all are, it’s impressive to witness.
And of course many players stop playing when the work on the careers or families and time is limited or perhaps lost interest. Most of those players turn to the game again later in life or their kids take it up and continue learning.
I was very fortunate to visit an old school buddy and his parents on a farm in Vryheid the past weekend which I haven’t seen for 16 years. Nick hasn’t played for years and asked me to bring him a racket down so that he can challenge his mom again, she has been hackling at him for some time now. Nick was a tough players and we used
to train every day as kids and would cycle miles to get to a courts. Chatting to him was amazing and all the memories with our tennis days and how Nick and his parents still cherish it was awesome to hear. We were chatting about where the next set of balls and strings would come from, and how we used to take his dads balls after they used it once, and now mocking the old man that after he used the balls that they were still brand new. All those memories that tennis gave so many of us and still building more is truly a gift.
Nick’s mom was telling me how upset she was about six months ago, after a tennis game, and that she didn’t want to play again. She could not put her finger on it at first, and then her husband found the answer - Nick’s mom is so competitive and she wasn’t able to put the ball away the way she was used to. The penny dropped when her husband said “she is getting older and slower and the power game must now be converted into a clever game, and so what if, she can’t reach the short balls”. He also said that “neither can her aging opponents use the same power and speed”. Mrs Viljoen smiled and agreed totally. She has loved her tennis ever since.
At my age to have seen how much joy tennis has brought to me and so many others is priceless and we are all truly blessed. What a great game!!

Dealing with aggression in childrenMore than 60% of young children that end up in play therapy have problems with aggressive behaviour. Therapy is usually the last resort in a sequence of desperate attempts by the nursery school and parents to discourage the aggressive behaviour of the child. Punishment, threatening the child and time out seems to be popular but often ineffective methods used at home and at nursery schools to control the behaviour of the young child.
We tend to forget that young children, like any other human beings, experience a wide range of intense emotions but are not equipped to recognise (often not even having the vocabulary to name an emotion) and deal with their feelings in an appropriate way. Anger in a child is NOT abnormal! The challenge is to teach the child to deal with these feelings in a constructive way. Disciplining your child does not automatically imply that you must punish him. Effective disciplining requires defining the parameters for your child and assisting him in acquiring the skills to deal with different situations and emotions within these parameters.Successful modification of aggressive behaviour requires input on different levels:• The parent/care giver: A caring, positive foundation
in which the child can trust the adult to continue to love him, no matter what, should be established.
• The classroom: Preventative actions should be taken in the class situation to intervene in time, and to deflect or replace aggressive behaviour with more acceptable actions.
• Social and emotional training: The child should be equipped with social and emotional skills (by teaching, modelling, role play) as alternative ways to deal with adverse situations.
• Play Therapy is advised as a medium in which the child can safely express and process his emotions.
The first step of intervention is to closely observe the aggressive behaviour of the child:
• Who triggers the aggressive behaviour? (Younger/ older children? A specific child or care giver?)
• What triggers the behaviour? (Is the child tired or hungry? Does the aggression occur at school/at home? When he is amongst a lot of people? Specific times of the day? During transition from one activity to another?)
• What is the function of the behaviour? (To communicate/ask something? To avoid an activity? To ask for help? )
• What is the child’s emotional status during the aggressive behaviour? (Tired? Sad? Frustrated? Stressed?)
The response of the adult often impacts on subsequent behaviour of the child:
• How does the parent or teacher typically react to the aggressive behaviour? Does the adult’s reaction reward or reinforce the child’s aggressive behaviour? (Negative responses or punishment may be perceived as attention and lead to more aggression.)
• Have there been any recent traumas or stressors that could lead to acting-out behaviour by the child?
Relationships
continue on page 38
- 38 - - 39 -
For further enquiries please contact Arèt Du Preez, Psychologist, cell 074 482 7900
The above will certainly provide guidelines to addressing the child’s problem.
• Typical Behaviour Modification Strategies include neutralising the aggressive behaviour (remove the child when you see trouble coming and redirect his attention), rewarding positive behaviour and teaching the child coping skills to identify and cope with anger in a constructive way.
• A record is kept of the behaviour of the child at different intervals during the day. Strategies are modified according to the specific needs of the child.
We often focus solely on the “aggressor’s” behaviour and tend to forget the role that the “victim” plays in maintaining the behaviour of the aggressor: Example: Johnny is a 3 year old boy. His vocabulary is very limited. He has just enrolled as a pupil of a big nursery school (over 200 children). There are 20 three year olds in his class. It is very noisy and busy. His friend, Lee, is 6 month older than Johnny (a huge difference in capabilities at this age). Lee forcibly takes a toy from Johnny. Johnny hits Lee as a way to assert himself. Lee starts crying and the teacher responds by scolding Johnny. Lee (who is a bit of a tale teller) has now learned how to seek attention of an adult: he must just start crying and accuse Johnny of hurting him. After a vicious circle has been established the desperate teacher tries to deal with the situation by never letting Johnny out of her sight and letting him sit next to her, even on the play ground. Johnny is now labelled as a naughty, aggressive boy by his teacher, the assistant and all the children in his class. He has evolved from a happy, spontaneous little boy with limited communication and assertive skills, into an angry, unhappy little boy who acts out according to the label that has been bestowed upon him.
Possible indicators of more serious underlying problems:
• The behaviour of the child is reckless and he constantly invades the personal space of other children.
• He displays the need for continuous high-intensity stimuli (hitting, shouting, kicking)
• Aggression without instigation.• Preoccupied with aggressive themes when playing.• Aggressive behaviour after experiencing a trauma.

Dainfern FootballDainfern Lions Football Club has two lovely stories to share with you.
The first being that of an up and coming talented Under 10 Goalkeeper by the name of Benjamin Sher and here is his story and I quote ….
“Hi, my name is Benjamin Sher. I am 10 years old and I am a proud ADP [advanced development program] soccer goalkeeper. I chose to play goalkeeper because it is elegant and very difficult to master the art of being a goalkeeper. I would never be where I am now if it wasn’t for Coach Gary Avnit, my goalkeeper coach. He is an amazing cool coach. He trains me on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 4 to 5. If you want to be a goalkeeper I really recommend you go to him. He has been training me for 4 years now and I feel I am in the best hands. On Saturdays my team, the Dainfern Lions and I play soccer matches and we also play in tournaments. I love my soccer so much”.
The second story is about a young man by the name of Seth V D Vyfer. He has been playing for

Energy Saving
Why electricity consumption needs to be reduced
We urge all consumers to pay attention to the electricity saving messages that Eskom and City Power are sending out through the media at the moment. The City of Johannesburg fully supports all of these power saving initiatives and request that you react accordingly to avoid outages caused by local overloading.
How can it be done?Eliminate all wasted electricity consumption• Always switch off unused lights and appliances
wherever you are.
• Don’t be in two places at the same time – switch off lights and appliances at home when you go to work.
• When you leave work do the same - switch off all lights, machinery and office equipment. Live in one place at a time.
Conserve – use power for shorter times or deliberately avoid using electricity• Use heaters for shorter periods of time and use the
thermostats on heaters to limit their consumption.
• Use jerseys, warm clothing and hot water bottles to keep warm rather than using heaters at all.
• Use the least amount of hot water that you can. Geysers use a lot more electricity if they have to make a lot more hot water!
• Don’t run two fridges per household if only one is really needed. (Get rid of the ‘beer’ fridge in the garage).
Energy efficiency – get the same job done using less energy• Invest in energy efficient lighting - replace old
incandescent lamps with energy saver lamps – compact fluorescent lamps or new LED lamps.
• Use appliances efficiently – don’t boil more water than is needed in a kettle, fill it only with the right amount of water needed.
• Match the pot size to the size of the stove plate when cooking.
Change the patterns of electricity usage – use less in morning and evening week day peak times
• Use washing machines on weekends rather than week days when there is a shortage of power.
• Avoid using power between 8am and 11am and 6pm to 9 pm on weekdays, this is the high risk time.
• Switch off electric heaters between 6 and 9 pm and rather use gas heaters where possible.
• Check swimming pool timers – only run the pump between 9pm and 5am – never in daytime.

LED Lights – the new lighting standardWhat if you could cut down your lighting energy consumption by 80-90%, save a great deal of money on your energy bill every month and not have to think about changing a light bulb in your home for several years?
Well, here are some quick facts to help you learn more about the latest generation of LED light bulbs.
LED bulbs can be used in many common fixtures in your home including accent lighting, track lighting, room lighting and outdoor spotlights. They offer many unique money and energy-saving benefits over traditional bulbs.
• Reduced power consumption for lighting. LED bulbs allow major costs savings in the electricity used for lighting, since they use up to 80% less to produce the same amount of light as incandescent and CFL lights.
• Reduced power consumption for cooling. Since LED bulbs emit far less heat than conventional lighting, the power consumed by air conditioners is reduced. This also extends the life of the air conditioning units.
• Exceptionally long lifespan. LED lights can last up to 5 times longer than compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL) and much longer than traditional incandescent bulbs. A typical LED light that burns for 8 hours per day can last for about 10 years before it needs changing,
making LED bulbs an ideal choice for hard-to-reach lights.
• Durable. LED lights contain no filaments or moving parts that can be damaged by shock and vibration, making them extremely durable and long-lasting. LED is one of the most stable light sources available.
• Reduced Carbon emissions. LEDs convert up to 80% of energy into light. This dramatically reduces carbon emissions, an environmentally friendly choice for lighting installations.
• Lower Levels of UV and heat. LEDs emit minimal Ultra Violet light (UV). UV light attracts insects and can be harmful to skin, clothing and artwork. Heat emissions are greatly reduced with LED, which means they are cool to touch and perfect for heat sensitive applications.
• No flicker - Instant light. LEDs are free of visible flicker and they produce 100% light instantly from switch on, with none of the warm up time required by fluorescents.
Mokapane Electrical would like to encourage all residents to save energy by converting your normal bulbs to LED and to install geysers switches- Time it and Save it!We also specialise in electrical installations, maintenance, house rewiring, emergency call-outs, security lighting, LED conversions, fault finding, power failures , geysers, pool motors, underfloor heating, generators, UPS systems and Certificates of Compliance. Mokopane Electrical has been servicing Dainfern residents for over 10 years.

Paint Effect - Suede Effect on Walls
Paint Ideas
Plascon Suede is a premium, textured matt paint that produces a luxurious brushed suede effect when applied in a criss-cross method. The suede effect is enhanced by Plascon Suede’s ability to absorb and reflect light, providing a depth and richness that cannot be achieved by conventional faux finishes.
By Karen Schaefer Louw • www.interior-decor-design.co.za
Method
Step 1Apply a basecoat of Plascon Polvin to the wall using a long-nap roller. If there are areas that cannot be reached with the roller, paint these with a brush first. Don’t worry if the first coat looks uneven and streaky. Allow at least four hours of drying time before applying the Plascon Suede topcoat.
Tip: Ensure that the wall surface has been properly prepared. It should be smooth, clean, firm and dry. For best results, ensure that your Polvin basecoat is tinted a similar colour to your Plascon Suede topcoat.
Step 2Stir the Plascon Suede well with a flat paddle for 5 minutes before use, and at regular intervals minutes while painting. Do not dilute the paint.
Step 3The suede effect is easiest to achieve using two people: one to apply the Plascon Suede( Colour of choice) topcoat with a wide, good quality, 100 mm brush, and the other to follow behind with another dry 100 mm brush, stroking over the wet surface with random criss-cross strokes. Work in areas of 1-2 square metres, and overlap the criss-crossed areas to ensure an even finish. Take care not to allow the paint edges to dry until they have been brushed over in this way, otherwise dark lines will appear. Allow 30 minutes for the effect to appear.
Tip: Should you wish to paint over Plascon Suede, lightly sand the surface, and apply a single coat of Plascon Plaster Primer (UC56), or Waterbased Universal Primer (WUP1). Leave it to dry, then follow with two coats of Plascon Double Velvet or Cashmere.
Materials• Plascon Polvin Colour of choice• Plascon Suede Colour of choice• A long-nap roller• 2 100 mm brushes

Gardening
Growing your own veggies in containersContainer vegetable gardening is ideal for small spaces, balconies, urban-homesteading and roof tops. Growing vegetables in containers and pots can sometimes be more successful than conventional gardening as you can control the growing conditions more easily. You can easily move your plants from one area to another, and your soil moisture content is often better than open ground.
Another way of container vegetable gardening is to grow your plants and vegetables in wooden boxes, with a fixed grid and to plant within each grid which measures one square foot. This method is called Square Foot Gardening.
What are Suitable Containers and Pots for Container Vegetable Gardening? You can create a container vegetable garden any type of container from the simple bucket to purpose made planters and pots. Use plastic buckets, old sinks, polystyrene boxes retrieved from the fruiterer, cut down wine barrels and window box planters.
As long as you have good soil, a sunny place, fresh seed and good drainage in your containers, you can grow vegetables in containers anywhere.
Remember though, if you are using terracotta or wooden containers for container gardening the soil will dry out quicker than if you are using plastic containers. For top
heavy plants like tomatoes, peppers and eggplants, make sure that the container is heavy and weighted.
For trailing plants like snow peas think about growing vegetables in hanging baskets instead. Hanging baskets are also a novel way of growing herbs.
What is the Best Soil for Growing Vegetables in Containers?Growing vegetables in containers really need to have good soil to thrive. Most potting mixes that you can purchase these days will be fine. Some even state that they have been packaged for herbs and vegetables. You can however make your own if you are feeling adventurous.
Make your Own Container Gardening Soil:You can make your own container gardening soil by taking 3 parts of good garden loam, 1 part of moistened peat moss, and 1 part coarse river sand. Added to this should be some well-rotted farmyard manure or compost .
continue on page 50
- 50 - - 51 -
In addition to your organic material, you can add the following to every 8 litres of soil:
1/2 cup Epsom salts1/4 cup coffee grounds (rinse them clean)4 egg shells (dried and crushed to powder)
To get air into your soil and to make it lighter, add some granular polystyrene, or better still Perlite. A couple of cupfuls to your containers should be enough. Adjust according to the size of the container, but can make up 1/3 of the volume. Don't add too much as it is a water-repellent, and unless you add extra peat moss, you will find that your soil will dry out quicker than you want.
It is always good to add a handful of blood and bone to give the vegetables a good start in their containers.
Growing Vegetables in Containers and DrainageMaking sure that your containers have good drainage is essential. In wide, shallow containers make sure that the holes are well spaced around the perimeter of the base. Rectangular containers should have at least one drainage hole in each corner. If sufficient drainage is not provided your plants will become water-logged and the soil will turn sour. In the end they will come to nothing.
You can use broken pottery or stones at the bottom of your containers or to prevent the soil being washed away through the drainage holes place a piece of metal, mosquito netting or fly screen across the holes before adding the soil.
What are the Best Types of Vegetables to Plant when Growing Vegetables in Containers? The sky is the limit you can even grow potatoes in old tyres and tomatoes in a plastic bucket. Sweet peppers can also be grown in this way, and because they are ornamental and attractive, they can be very successfully grown in a nice pot on your patio. Both tomatoes and peppers will probably need to be staked.
As long as you containers have depth you can grow carrots and parsnips in containers and other root vegetables such as beetroot, turnips, and radishes, and even garlic.
Small vegetables like cress, mustard, spring onions and most herbs of course, are ideal for growing in containers, as is fast-growing rocket, spinach and a variety of lettuces. Leaves can be picked on an ongoing process, even before they have matured.
Estate Map BoardsLarge map boards detailing roadways, stand numbers, nature trails and other interesting information have been placed at strategic locations around the estate.
These have been manufactured and installed to assist both residents and visitors to Dainfern. Many visitors tend to have difficulty in locating their destination upon entering the estate, thereby causing unnecessary delays with access control personnel having to provide directions. Many member are also largely unaware as to existence of the nature trails and nature areas which have been developed over many years for their enjoyment and convenience.
Map boards have been located at both entrances to Dainfern, the Clubhouse parking lot and at the Pavillion in Highgate Village.

Bird WalkA group of 11 birders gathered at the Clubhouse early on the morning of 8 August when the frost still lay crisp and white on the golf course.
It was a chilly start but as the morning wore on it grew warmer and a good number of birds were seen. The river produced Yellow-billed Duck, African Black Duck, Grey-headed Gull and Three-banded Plover, as well as a family of Egyptian Geese with young goslings, more evidence that this species is now breeding throughout the year on the estate. A pair of Red-throated Wrynecks perched obligingly in the open and Crested Barbets and Grey Go-away-birds were very vocal and conspicuous.
Further along it was noticed that another pair of Egyptian Geese had commanded an owl nesting box and appeared to be incubating eggs (see above photo). They always breed at a nesting site above ground and the goslings will be coaxed by the parents to leap onto the ground after hatching. The soft bodies of the goslings cushion any injury they may suffer from the fall.
One of the more interesting sightings of the morning was of a group of Rose-ringed Parakeets, sighted amongst the poplars near The Glades. This is also a species that has become established in Dainfern and which now breeds on the estate. A pair of Cardinal Woodpeckers provided an interesting diversion in the same area.
It was a good morning’s birding and a taste of what is to come with spring and summer just around the corner!
Upcoming Bird Walk
Our next walk will take place on Saturday 12th September; meet at the clubhouse at 6.45 to leave at 7.00am sharp. Hopefully it will be a little warmer in September!! Please remember to bring along your binoculars and wear walking shoes. All welcome but no dogs please.
The Red-throated Wryneck is reasonably common in Dainfern estate and in most parts of the Highveld in South Africa, preferring fairly open country with large trees that it uses for foraging and breeding purposes.
It looks like a nondescript bird with mostly brown plumage; however on closer inspection one will notice that its plumage is vermiculated with grey, it has a black stripe down its back, and the throat and chest is a bright reddish-chestnut colour, which gives the species its name.
Pairs of these birds can be found foraging together, obtaining most of their food on the ground when they feed mainly on ants and their eggs and pupae, using their long sticky tongues to reach their prey from inside nests. This is another species that has a very distinctive call and often their presence is given away by the high pitched keek-keek-keek call the bird makes and which is quite far-carrying. When calling the bird will usually perch on a prominent branch or post. Birds have favoured roost sites which they retire to at sunset, such as a nesting log, hollow pole, or building cavity, leaving again just before sunrise. Wrynecks are often mistaken for woodpeckers because of their similar habits and undulating flight but
are actually quite distinctive and exhibit different plumage and behavioural characteristics.
Wrynecks breed in old barbet and woodpecker holes in our region in the summer months, mostly from Sep-Feb, with a peak of breeding activity in early summer in Oct and Nov, when the birds will lay 3-4 eggs. This is a reason to keep a nesting log in your garden after barbets have used it and moved on. You can prolong the life of the nesting log by ensuring that it is watertight by fastening either metal or plastic at both ends of the log, since once a hole is hollowed out at the very bottom and at the top no bird will use it again.
Our habitat is well suited to the Red-throated Wryneck as Dainfern has open areas of grassland with large trees and we should continue to enjoy the presence of this enigmatic species if our environment is maintained in a healthy state and the habitat remains intact.
