The Urbana University alumni and friends magazine is the result of a fantastic collaboration between the University’s Marketing, Communications, and Alumni Relations staff. Although the name of the magazine has remained the Urbana Update for more than 25 years, the magazine was re-launched in 2010. Since then, it goes out twice a year and has captured the attention of our alumni.

We are so proud that the Urbana Update is consistently evolving to reflect campus news, sharing stories that express the uniqueness of our alumni, and recognizing the accomplishments of our alumni in their chosen fields since earning their degree. As part of the University’s commitment to being eco-friendly, alumni who once received our magazine by mail now receive it electronically. We hope the stories inspire you and bring back fond memories of your time at Urbana.

Urbana University and the UU Colleges

Against Cancer student organization hosted its annual RELAY FOR LIFE fundraiser to support the American Cancer Society. As part of the RELAY, President Jones led a 22-hour overnight bike ride to

celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. The event also consisted of a continuous walk around the center of campus and a pinwheel ceremony honoring those touched by the disease. In

eight years, Urbana University has raised nearly $75,000 to benefit the Champaign Co. Relay for Life. ■

Dr. Vedder spoke to an invited group of community leaders, visited with Urbana University students in Dr. Rachel Wilson’s macroeconomics classes, and made a public presentation on “The Roots of American

Exceptionalism.” The speaker provided a much needed dialogue for the campus community regarding academia, business practices, and policies critical for understanding the foundations of capitalism.

His visit was the first in a series of lectures sponsored by the BrownRidge Foundation and former United States Representative Clarence Brown Jr. and Mrs. Joyce Eldridge Brown. ■


Urbana University is frozenUrbana freezes tuition, room, and board fees for the 2012-2013 academic year.

The Urbana University Board of Trustees and

Administration are pleased to announce that the tuition, room, and board charges for the 2012-2013 academic year will not increase for undergraduate students.

“These times demand that we do all we can to help students and their families. Urbana University remains committed to providing a quality education at an affordable price,” said Dr. Stephen Jones, president of

Urbana University. Dr. Steve Polsley, chair of the Board of Trustees, added, “In a time when our prospective and returning students are struggling to afford their education, we remain committed to holding down the cost of

tuition. We are dedicated to the success of our students and that requires that we make their education affordable.”

Tuition increases for 2011-2012 averaged 4.6 percent at private institutions

nationwide and similar increases are expected for 2012-2013. Urbana University’s commitment to making an excellent private education more affordable extends beyond the 2012 – 2013 tuition, room and board freeze. During Winter and May Intercessions, the University offers accelerated online courses at significant discounts. Undergraduate students can also earn credit at greatly reduced rates by enrolling in summer term courses.■

children’s literatUre befriends sWedenborG libraryCorfman Brings Reading to Community through Book Donation.

The Swedenborg Library will be a little

friendlier to early childhood education majors, thanks to the donation of more than 600 books made by retiring education faculty member, Ann Corfman.

When it came time to find a home for her extensive collection of children’s literature, she wanted to make sure that the books found a good home and were used for what

Corfman spent her life doing; teaching others. The library was a logical fit for the books, which will continue Corfman’s legacy.

The gift is appreciated at the University. “This is a significant boost for our Children’s Literature collection and will be valuable for students majoring in education as well as our students who have children that accompany them to

the library when the parents need to study or conduct research,” said Librarian Julie McDaniels. ■

Thanks to a visit from Dr. Devin Zuber,

Urbana University’s 2012 Swedenborg Scholar-in-Residence, campus got a real understanding of how the Swedenborg faith connects to ecology.

During his visit, Zuber introduced the notion of Greek “oikos” or sense of community amongst all peoples. He continued

to discuss how influential Swedenborg’s writings in the Principia was on the scientific community. “It was a really marvelous moment when Swedenborg describes the paradigm shift movement, nebular hypothesis,” shared Zuber. Swedenborg is credited for the nebular hypothesis, which explores the formation and evolution of the solar system.

Dr. Devin Zuber is an assistant professor for American Studies, Literature, and Swedenborgian Studies at the Graduate Theological Union (GTU) in Berkeley, California, where he serves as a faculty member for the PhD Program in Art and Religion. The Swedenborg Scholar-in-Residence at Urbana University is made possible by funding from

the General Convention of the Swedenborgian Church. ■

alUMni creatinG a cUltUre of PeaceUrbana University Remembers the 10th Anniversary of 9/11.

On the 10 year anniversary of 9/11,

John ‘77 and Beverly (Bev) Titus ’90 marked the event with a commemorative week on campus that had everyone asking, “What Does Peace Mean?” After losing their daughter Alicia in the 9/11 attacks, “We are trying to get young people thinking about peace and how the world will look in 10, 20 or 30 years,” stated Bev Titus.

Dorothy “Dot” Maver, president of the National Peace Academy and peace advocate, spoke to the campus community about the impact 9/11 made on the country. Maver stated, “There have been moments in our human history that we can term a great turning. When it has gently, sometimes forcibly moved humanity in another

direction.” Her lecture encouraged students to ask: Are we creating a culture of peace?

John Titus, the Board of Trustee member, alumnus and former faculty signed copies of his book, A Father’s Journey: Losing Alica After 9/11. During the commemorative week he shared, “One of the blessings I have been given in the midst of all of this hopelessness is a greater compassion, new hope for a brighter tomorrow, keener insight and understanding with an ever-growing love in my heart.”

John and Bev have continued advocating for peace education in the community and at Urbana by assisting with the UU Student Peace Alliance. After a spring

meeting, “More than half of the students said they were concerned about the growing violence not only within our community, but on campus within this past year. We talked about things to do to create a culture of peace on campus and how

we might carry that out into the community,” Bev said.

Alumnus Dave Ross ’76, dedicated

to Urbana University and a strong supporter of athletics, is the commencement speaker on Saturday, May 5, 2012.

A philanthropist and media figure, he serves as an active member of the Urbana University Board of Trustees, he focuses on the Intercollegiate Athletics program to recognize former student athletes by steering the Athletic Hall of Fame. He played a

major role in the University Stadium project.

In 2010, he was inducted into the Sidney City Schools Hall of Honor. His support is steadfast for City of Sidney and Shelby County. His broadcasting career covers college and professional sports in the northern Miami Valley.

Assessment plays a major role in the

nursing field. Director for Urbana University’s Center for Leadership Excellence, Terry Pope, is working to ensure that standards within the industry remain high to promote excellence in nursing and global healthcare.

Pope will be serving as

an Accreditation Program Appraiser through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). “As a health care executive for the past 25+ years, I have seen some of the best examples of the most powerful and influential leadership demonstrated over and over again by nurses who were directly involved in patient

care,” she says.

The ANCC is the world’s largest and most prestigious nurse credentialing organization; it is a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association. Pope also serves as a Urbana University Foundation Director. ■


UU senior sPeaks at nUl conferenceStratton presents short story at national conference.

Heather Stratton, a senior majoring

in English, received the opportunity of a lifetime this spring—thanks to the 27th National Undergraduate Literature Conference. At the annual conference, held at Weber State University in Utah, Stratton had the opportunity to present an original short story titled Wilkins and Schmidt, to a nationwide audience of peers and hear some of the most important writers in contemporary literature speak.

Her story was inspired after reading the journal of

James Watson, known for the discovery of the double helix DNA model, in her Honors seminar class. Stratton was impressed with Watson’s attitude and age of 25. She stated, “He completely tore down the white-lab-coat stereotype, and showed us that no matter how we may view someone based on who he is or what he does, at the end of the day, he is still human.” Through this, she created two characters who argue over technology and its impact on social aspects of life.

Dean of the College of

Arts and Sciences, Dr. Cheryl Fenno shared, “We are proud of Heather for winning this wonderful recognition. It speaks to her creativity, work ethic, and writing skills. Heather is an exemplary student who always goes above and beyond. She is one of the finest students I’ve ever taught.”

During her visit to Utah, she met with fellow authors who share her passion for writing. She is currently exploring graduate school options. We are confident that Heather will continue to represent the University in a positive light. ■

at theUWhether it was in class, in The Commons, or by

chance encounter, all of our alumni couples have one thing in common—they met and fell in love

at school. The Urbana Alum Facebook page asked alumni to share their personal stories so that we could recognize and celebrate them. In their own words, here are the stories of 10 Blue Knight alumni sweethearts.

Bill '71 and Audra (Dawson) Bean '03I was first introduced to Bill Bean when he came to my office to give a presentation to my Board of Trustees on D&O liability insurance. Afterwards, he ended up in my office with my boss and for some reason, the subject of marriage came up. Bill shared with us his philosophy on how marriage should be and that you should love but also like the person that you marry and never want to change that person. I fell hook, line and sinker. I called him and asked him for his email address and we started chatting. We started dating in November 1998. He later discovered that I wanted to go back to college and earn my bachelor’s degree. It was with his encouragement that I began UU For Life and obtained my bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 2003. We were married on February 7, 2000. He is my soul mate and love of my life. Bill is a UU alumnus from 1971 when he received his bachelor’s degree in religion & philosophy. Bill was a UU board member for 20 years and still remains active on the Alumni Advisory Board. Story submitted by Audra Bean. ■

Dave '99 and Heather (Rose) Taynor '98Dave was an All-American football player and I was a pitcher on the softball team. I also was an athletic training major and was fortunate to be a student athletic trainer for the football team where I met Dave during football camp in the fall of 1995, when one of Dave’s best friends and fellow UU alumnus-- Rich Newsome ‘97-- set us up on a date. Our first date was watching Cowboy Way! We dated off and on during the next few years of college then officially became a couple in October of 1997 and have been together ever since.

We have been married for almost 11 years and just had our first daughter (Chloe) on January 12, 2012. In May of 2008, we came full circle when Dave was hired as the head football coach at our alma mater after being away from Ohio since the fall of 1999. I also work in higher education as the executive director of enrollment management at Ivy Bridge College of Tiffin University. Go Blue Knights! Story submitted by Heather Taynor. ■

Ronald '74 and Valerie (Wilson) Brugler '75One crisp September morning in 1971 I was walking from the Hub to my dorm room in East Hall. While strolling that

gravel path, my eyes saw the most beautiful girl I had ever seen coming toward me. That one moment forever changed my life.

My sister Rita ‘75 lived in Blackmer and Valerie lived in the suite below hers. For the next week or so, I used any excuse to go over there. Being the best sister in the world, Rita arranged for Val and me to meet.

We were married on June 29, 1973 in the Urbana Swedenborgian Church. When I graduated, we moved to Boston so that I could attend the Swedenborg School of Religion. Val finished her degree in 1975 with independent studies and seminary classes.

We have now been married for 38 wonderful years. We have two grown children, Toby and Jessie, who both live in New York City. Val and I are retired now and live in Cleveland. I have oftentimes said that Urbana College gave me an excellent education and the woman I love! Story submitted by Rev. Ron Brugler. ■

Dylan '07 and Jodie (Snyder) Walker '06In 2002, Dylan was an incoming freshman and on the men’s soccer team and I was a sophomore trying out for the women’s soccer team. In April 2003, Dylan and I played a one-on-one game of basketball and during this game, Dylan tried to “steal the ball” from me, but ended up holding my hand. We started dating September 24, 2003. Dylan and I were married on November 24, 2007 in Cloverdale, OH. We currently live in Urbana and I am an admissions counselor at UU. Dylan is a 3rd grade teacher at North Dayton School of Discovery and we had a daughter on August 12, 2011. Story submitted by Jodie Walker. ■

Kyle '05 and Jessica (Yunker) Wunderlich '07Jessica and I met on campus through a common friend and UU alumna, Mary Brunner. Jessica played hard to get for a little while, but once we were on the same intramural basketball team, she fell hard for the vintage Karl Malone uniform. We were two people from different worlds. Jessica, a country girl from Marysville, and me a city boy from Cincinnati. Somehow, that was the perfect combination. We registered as students at Urbana University and left with our futures in hand. Our first child and potential “Future Blue Knight” will arrive any day. Submitted by Kyle Wunderlich. ■

Jeffrey '05, MBA '07 and Julie (Metzger) Sasala '06Jeff and I unintentionally met in the spring of 2005 while I was the soccer GA and he was an undergrad. I was going on rounds with the RAs and stopped at the Maple Suites because students were being loud. I ended with writing up Jeff and his friends. In the Fall of 2005, Jeff attended UU for his graduate degree and we met for the second time at Catfish Jones. We started dating and were engaged November 2006. We had our wedding rehearsal at Catfish Jones were we meet and were married on June 14, 2008. Story submitted by Julie Sasala. ■


Greg '02 and Grace (Nannarone) Hower '02Greg and I met at an Urbana University Homecoming football game in 2000. Greg approached me and offered to buy me a soda. We sat together and talked throughout the rest of the game.

We fell in love instantly and met each other’s parents within a week or two of dating. Our lives since graduation have been filled with love and laughter. We got married in 2001, had children, and now live and work in Urbana. One of our favorite things to do is taking our family on walks and bike rides through UU campus and showing our children “where Mommy and Daddy fell in love”. Submitted by Greg and Grace Hower. ■

Eli Oliver '10 and Ashley Powell '07 Eli and Ashley met in 2006 when attending the same high school together in Versailles, Ohio. Eli was an 06’ graduate while Ashley was an 07’ graduate. They attended Urbana University together. Eli is currently finishing his MBA from Urbana University while Ashley is finishing her MS in clinical psychology from Morehead State University. The wedding date is October 13, 2012. Submitted by Ashley Powell. ■

Julia Daulton '04 and Keith Monroe '08In 2004, Keith and I had one of Dr. Cooley’s European history classes together during the presidential election between John Kerry and George W. Bush. Keith, a Kerry supporter, and I an equally supportive of Bush supporter, had a rather loud argument on one of the first days of class. Dr. Cooley had to raise his voice to get us both to shut up! Keith and I actually didn’t begin dating until several years after we had both graduated from UU. We have been dating since May 18, 2011. Story submitted by Julia Daulton. ■


Jerry '86 and Billie Jo (Tavenner) Fetherolf '88Jerry and I met in fall 1984. I would go to the library where he did his work study. He asked me to the Valentine’s Day dance and we danced all night. In December 1985, we were engaged. It was the best Christmas gift ever. After graduation in 1988 we got married on July 29, 1988. We have a daughter, Amber, who is a successful student attending a local college. She will graduate on May 5, 2012. She will continue her studies after she graduates in the Speech Pathology field. Todd '93 and Barbara (Dillon) Charles '96My husband and I met when I was a freshman and he was a senior. I had moved off-campus with two friends the second semester of my freshman year. Todd showed up at a party that we hosted to celebrate our new apartment. We didn’t know him and I’m still not sure how he ended up at our apartment! He kept asking me out - I eventually said yes. We had our first date in March 1993 and were engaged in June 1993. We were finally married on August 5, 1995. We celebrated our 16 year anniversary this past summer. We have two daughters and we are both teachers and still have ties to Urbana. Submitted by Barbara Charles. ■

Almost everyone has a dream to meet their hero. For some, their idol is an actor or actress of the stage and screen, big or small. For others, it is someone who has changed the world or is going to change the world through science, medicine, or politics. This particular article is about the night of April 7, the night I got to meet my rock hero, Rick Springfield. It wasn’t until I started college that I started going to Rick’s concerts. When it was announced on Facebook that Rick was coming to Columbus to do a charity concert, I knew I had to go and take my best friend Katie. During intermission, the concert staff was selling raffle tickets to benefit the charity; a guitar signed by Rick Springfield was the grand prize. Since it was for a good cause, I bought a set of six tickets. The winning ticket was announced; it was mine! I ran to claim the guitar and realized that it was one he played earlier - the grand prize wasn’t just a signed guitar, but a Meet and Greet!

“I, somehow, got up enough courage to talk to him. He gave me an extra hug and asked how old I was going to be. I told him and he said ‘I remember 23,’ with a sly smile.”

While he signed the guitar, the photographer in the room took a picture of Rick putting his arm around my shoulders and hugging me tight. He then kissed the side of my head goodbye and I left, signed guitar in hand, walking on air. I still can’t believe any of that happened! I will never forget meeting my rock hero. ■

Justin Edwards has always been an extremely competitive person. It was his desire to be the best that fueled the work that eventually turned him into a football and wrestling stand-out. A passion for athletic competition and enduring work ethic led Justin on a new path, one inside the steel cage of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). The UFC is the holy grail of competitive mixed martial arts fighting. As MMA has continued to grow in popularity over the last two decades, so has the UFC, becoming the home for the best fighters and events in world. Justin has had a great deal of success in mixed martial arts. He has compiled an 8-2 record in his young career. He was also featured on the UFC’s reality TV show “The Ultimate Fighter”, in which a house full of aspiring professional fighters competed for a UFC contract. Justin did not win the competition, but he was signed on for additional fights after the show. This is an accomplishment and Justin believes that his time at Urbana University helped prepare him for this task.

“There is always a Blue Knight cheering section. The majority of my fans are Urbana alumni. That’s what it is, a bunch of guys that I played with. In one fight, it was all alumni students.”

Justin will continue to train locally, and hopes to someday open up a gym of his own in the area. He shared that he would love to help develop the careers of other aspiring fighters. And while his involvement as a professional athlete continues to grow, Justin will always carry a bit of Urbana University with him. ■

Dr. David George, professor of English, College of Arts and Sciences, is known on campus for many things. For some, it may be his English accent; for others it may be his regular bike rides to his campus office. He is also likely to be remembered for his high standards in the classroom and the love of Shakespeare, who he has researched for almost three decades. Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Kirk Peterson stated, “Dr. George has faithfully served Urbana University and its students for 31 years. I applaud his continued professional growth through scholarship, which includes articles and chapters published, and papers presented at local, state, and national conferences. Dr. George is recognized for his volunteer work in the University’s Success Center and our students are better because of his dedication and effort.” His work as a scholar is undeniable. He regularly contributes to the literary world and is professionally engaged in his craft. Dr. Cheryl Fenno, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, shared, “Dr. George’s list of publications and presentations is impressive indeed. A

renowned Shakespearian scholar, he is one of the most widely published scholars at UU. His Variorum edition of Coriolanus will be an invaluable contribution to Shakespearian study. It is also splendid that Dr. George has involved several UU students in his research, thus exposing these students to the world of academic scholarship.”

After 26 years, Dr. George’s book, A New Variorum Edition of Shakespeare’s Coriolanus, is in the process of being published.

It has been a labor of love for him that has not gone without its fair share of stories and adventures. Dr. George spotlighted his earlier adventures by sharing what he does best, writing. ■

A degree from Urbana University can take a Blue Knight many different places. Those who have studied at 579 College Way have found themselves staying in the area, pursuing work in other sections of the state, or even moving across the country to chase their dreams. But for Kate Malone, her Urbana education and dreams have lead her even farther away from the Urbana University campus, so for away in fact that she needed a visa. Upon completing her degree, Kate went on to further her education, receiving a master in social work from Ohio University. Her degree in social work led her to London, Ohio, were Kate spent five years working in the field. However, it wasn’t her work experience that took her on her latest adventure. In fact, it was Kate’s love of travel that led her to her current chapter in her life, living and doing social work in Auckland, New Zealand. Kate has always been a fan of traveling and had visited numerous countries including Australia and England, but never felt more at home than when she first visited New Zealand. After returning home from her first visit, Kate knew that she wanted to return and began making arrangements to do so. She applied for a one year work visa and left, not entirely sure of what the future might bring.

“I knew I wanted to be in a social sciences field and to help people improve their lives. I have really enjoyed becoming a social worker and working with a variety of age groups since I finished school.”

Upon arrival in New Zealand, Kate spent time working in door-to-door sales and also did a stint picking Kiwi fruit. In May, Kate received the offer she had been waiting for; she was given a position as a full-time social worker at a child and adolescent community mental health facility. She cites the faculty and staff of the UU campus as being very knowledgeable and supportive of her during her time as a student. She also made great friends, with whom she is still in contact, despite the extreme distances between them. Kate even believes that being exposed to roommates and other students from different countries influenced her decision to move abroad. ■

HOMECOMING ‘11H omecoming 2011 attracted more than 3,000 visitors, alumni, and their families and friends

back to campus on October 15. Highlights included the Kids Zone, the Alumni Advisory Board Happy Hour, the tailgating tent, the football game, and honoring the football teams from 2005, 2007, and 2009 (579 Club) in the end zone at the start of third quarter. The 579 Club was recognized for their accomplishments on the field.

Jake Kubuske ’08 stated about the 579 recognition, “Even though we weren’t all there, we got to see a lot of our former teammates and friends that we lived some of the best years of our lives with. We knew back then we were a part of something special, and it was great to be recognized for constructing the foundation that Blue Knight football continues to build today.”

Blue Knight fans showed their pride and cheered on the football team during the game. Their hard work and determination of every player, supported by an enthusiastic crowd, led to a win for the Blue Knights! A proud moment for the Urbana community! ■

G-MAC MAKES APPLICATION WITH NCAAUrbana University’s new D-II Conference remains on course for participation in 2012-2013.

The Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC), which came together in October of 2011, has officially made application with the

NCAA to become the 24th conference at the Division II level. The President of each member institution has signed the application, which was submitted to the NCAA in advance of the required December 1, 2011 deadline.

“The G-MAC represents an exciting breakthrough for Urbana University,” explains President Dr. Stephen Jones. “We’re charter members of a conference that will mature into a showcase for NCAA Division II competition within our region. What a pleasure it has been, and will continue to be, formally interacting with these fine institutions.”

Over the past month, the G-MAC has come together quickly with six schools from Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee, including Cedarville University (Cedarville, Ohio), Central State University (Wilberforce, Ohio), Kentucky Wesleyan College (Owensboro, Ky.), Trevecca Nazarene University (Nashville, Tenn.), Urbana University (Urbana, Ohio), and Ursuline College (Pepper Pike, Ohio).

The submitted materials include a letter of application, a completed application document as prescribed by the membership process, a feasibility study, a strategic plan for the league and the approved G-MAC Constitution, Bylaws and projected budgets.

The NCAA Membership Committee will review the application and make an official decision on February 20, 2012 on the status of the G-MAC as an active NCAA Division II conference. If approved, the G-MAC will begin an educational assessment program with the goal of satisfying the requirements of the program within the year. As part of the process, Tom Daeger was hired as the G-MAC’s first commissioner on November 21.

“If approved, we will continue to advance the growth of the conference membership,” said Daeger. “The G-MAC intends to incorporate by July 2012 and provide the services expected of a NCAA Division II conference for the 2012-13 academic year by offering all administrative, scheduling, officiating, championship, and other opportunities for the members of the league. It is the intent of the G-MAC membership to build a model NCAA Division II conference office from the outset and steps are being taken to achieve this goal.”

If the G-MAC gains active approval, and at such point at which the league meets sports sponsorship and active member requirements, it will gain full privileges of NCAA Division II Conference membership, including conference grant distribution, voting

The G-MAC will receive a share of the NCAA Enhancement Fund one year after meeting active conference membership requirements and hopes to gain automatic qualification for NCAA Championships two years after active membership for those sports in which the league meets the necessary requirements.

“The G-MAC members have worked diligently to compile a detailed application for the NCAA Division II Membership Committee’s review,” said Daeger. “We will continue to work hard in ensuring we are embracing the NCAA Division II philosophy and will strive to be an asset for the D-II membership if approved as the division’s 24th conference.” ■

University is approved as a

charter member of the G-MAC

December 2011The G-MAC officially applies to become the 24th conference at the NCAA D-II level. The

conference expects more charter members to be added before the conference officially begins competition during the 2012-13 school year.

July 2010 The NCAA sends official notice that UU has been approved for

full-fledged D-II membership during the 2010-11 school

year, ending the school’s 3-year mandatory transition.
