URBANA FOOTBALL GAME OVERVIEW • Urbana is ranked No. 7 in the first edition of the NCAA regional rankings and playing for the first football postseason appearance in school history. • Urbana has not won four straight games in a season since 2013. • Urbana is 8-15 with seven straight wins under the lights; WLU is 11-14 in night games. • UU scored at least 24 points in all six wins while WLU has put up 24 or more points in every game this season. • W.R. Sanders is two rushing TDs shy of breaking the Urbana single-season record. NOTING THE BLUE KNIGHTS • The program turnaround continues for Tyler Haines, who now holds the most wins in a single season during his five-year coaching career. The Blue Knights finished 5-6 (4-6 MEC) in each of the past two seasons, and last week’s victory clinched the first winning season since 2013 (7-4). • Urbana has improved steadily each year with Haines at the helm. UU is 16-14 in three seasons (2017-19) after going 8-25 in the previous three campaigns (2014-16). • Speaking of improvement, UU started 3-0 for the first time ever and is 6-2 for only the fourth time: 2005: 6-5 (started 6-2); 2007: 6-5 (started 5-3); 2009: 6-5 (started 4-4); 2011: 8-3 (started 2-3); 2012: 7-4 (started 6-2); 2013: 7-4 (started 6-2). • An Urbana win Thursday night will tie the team’s record for most wins in the MEC era (7). The Blue Knights also have a shot at breaking the school record for wins. UU’s best ledger came in back-to-back years in 2011 and 2012 with an 8-3 overall record. • UU leads the MEC in several categories. Defensively, the Blue Knights lead the way in fewest yards allowed (313.3), scoring defense (23.3), first downs allowed (136), opponent third-down percentage (.288) and team sacks (3.13). On offense, UU has the fewest turn- overs (9) and fewest tackles for loss allowed (4.88). • The Blue Knights are 6-0 when holding possession for over 30 minutes this season. Two weeks ago, UU recorded a season-high mark of 37:05 at West Virginia State (W, 35-31) which was the second-highest TOP in the school’s D2 era. The highest time of possession (37:33) came two years ago in a heartbreaking home loss to West Virginia Wesleyan. • UU is 24-4 when rushing for 200 or more yards in the D2 era. UU has topped 200 rush- ing yards three times this season in wins over Wesleyan, Wheeling and WV State, once in the series against West Liberty with 213 in the last visit to the hilltop. • UU has had success passing the ball over the past five games with 11 of 17 touch- downs through the air. That’s a rerversal from the first three games when UU scored 11 of 15 touchdowns on the ground - the second-most rushing TD’s in any three-game span during the D2 era. • Under Haines, Urbana is 8-3 in road games decided by seven points or less. One of the losses came in the last trip to West Liberty (24-21 WLU). on this date - october 31st • 1987 vs. Defiance: W, 31-7 • 2009 vs. Ohio Dominican: L, 21-12 • 1992 at Findlay: L, 47-12 • 2015 at UVa-Wise: L, 24-19 • 1998 vs. Trinity Int’l: W, 46-34 game #9 vs. west liberty GAME INFO details urbana blue knights west liberty hilltoppers 2019 Record: 6-2, 6-2 MEC Ranking: 7th (NCAA SR1) NR (Coaches or Media) Head Coach: Tyler Haines Alma Mater: Defiance ‘06 Overall Record: 21-31 (.404) Record at UU: same (5th) vs. West Liberty: 1-3 2019 Record: 4-4, 3-4 MEC Ranking: NR (Coaches) NR (Media) Head Coach: Roger Waialae Alma Mater: Dubuque (Iowa) ‘89 Overall Record: 81-82 (.497) Record at WLU: same (15th) vs. Urbana: 4-2 Date: Thursday, Oct. 31, 2019 Location: West Liberty, W. Player notables• Senior QB Eddie Stockett was named the MEC Offensive Player of the Week after his clutch performance in the win at WVSU (13-19, 236 yds, 5 total TD). Stockett (14 TD, 4 INT) has thrown a career-high three TDs twice this year. He is riding a career-best three game streak without a turnover.• Junior RB W.R. Sanders is tied for second in UU single-season history for most rushing touchdowns (10). He needs two to pass former All-American quarterback DJ Mendenhall, who had 11 rushing TDs in 2011. Sanders set a new school single-game record with four rushing TDs in his first game as a Blue Knight (Week 2 vs. Charleston). He has three 100-yard games and is currently 139 yards shy of crack-ing the top 10 in school history for most rushing yards in a season.• Sophomore wideout Rafael Floyd has emerged into a threat with a team-high 407 receiving yards on a team-best 34 receptions. Remarkably, 20 of his grabs have gone for first downs (59%).• Senior linebacker Duray Hall has moved into third place on the school’s all-time career list and also third among active D2 career leaders with 342 tackles. He needs 32 to take over second place on the school’s all-time chart. Former All-American D’Gary Wallace (‘15) is the all-time leader with 431 tackles.• Senior DE Mikal Toliver, a two-time MEC First Team selection, had his season cut short after suffer-ing an injury at West Virginia State in Week 7. Toliver will end his playing career with the second-most sacks in school history with 23.5 and the seventh-most TFLs with 44.
notes continued• Taking care of the rock has been critical for Urbana’s success this season. UU has only turned it over twice in four weeks with no interceptions. The importance of ball security is magnified even more since the Blue Knights have not forced many takeaways, recently. UU’s defense has gone four games without an interception after pulling down five in the first four contests of the season.• The tunover margin is trending up for the Blue Knights this season. The last time UU had a positive margin was the last time the football program had a winning record: -1 (2019) -12 (2018) -5 (2017) -10 (2016) -9 (2015) -8 (2014) +1 (2013)• Since adding lights to UU Stadium in the summer of 2017, the Blue Knights football team has won seven straight night games. The last Urbana loss under the lights? Well, that happened at West Family Stadium in the 2017 season opener, a 24-21 Hilltopper victory. UU had a punt return TD called back which proved costly. The Blue Knights have never lost a home night game at UU Stadium.• UU piled up a season-high eight sacks and 12 TFL in last week’s win over Concord in a downpour at UU Stadium. Senior DE Onajai Davenport had a career day with three sacks and four TFL. The eight sacks tied a D2 era record and is third in program history. UU had 11 sacks in a 2007 win over Walsh - the team’s last win over a ranked opponent at UU Stadium.• The Blue Knight defense has the second-most sacks in the MEC since the start of the 2017 season with 87 in 30 games. Notre Dame College has 101 after producing a whopping 50 sacks in 2018.• Urbana is riding one the most successful three-year spans in school history with 16 victories. A win on Thursday would tie the program’s fourth-highest mark for combined wins over three seasons. 22: 2011-13 20: 2010-12 19: 2009-11 17: 2005-07, 2012-14 16: 2004-06, 2017-19• The Blue Knights have led at halftime in four games (Wesleyan, Wheeling, Glenville, Concord).• Urbana garnered a vote in the Week 4 edition of the national coaches’ poll. It was only the third time UU received votes in the AFCA poll during the D2 era. (Sept. 3 & 20, 2012)• UU had a record-setting performance in a 41-26 win at Wheeling, where it racked up a school-record 441 rushing yards on 64 attempts. It was the fourth-highest total in MEC history and the second most in a NCAA Division II game in 2019. Three different players went over the 100-yard mark, led by W.R. Sanders Jr. (207), Isaiah Young (132) and Maurice Warren Jr. (102).

series notes• The team leading at haltime is 7-1 in the series between Urbana and West Liberty. The first meeting was tied 10-10 at intermission before WLU came out on top.• Urbana has scored 15 of 19 touchdowns in the series on passing plays.• The two teams played in the first full varsity season for Urbana in 1986, a game in which the Hilltop-pers outscored the Blue Knights 35-10 in the second half, despite Urbana grabbing six interceptions. • West Liberty snapped an Urbana three-game winning streak in the 1987 season finale, limiting the Blue Knights to just 63 total rushing yards.• UU threw the ball 71 times in first-ever meeting in 1986 and 61 times in 2015 matchup, both losses for the Blue Knights.• The 2004 season opener between the two schools was a wild one. UU led 13-0 at halftime before WLU pulled out a miracle to win in overtime. After UU scored first in OT, WLU responded with a TD pass on 4th-and-16 and then made the 2-point try to win. Regulation ended in similar fashion as WLU scored on 4th-and15 from the UU 30 and converted the 2-point PAT to force overtime. The game also included a 45-minute lightning delay.• Urbana’s eight sacks in the 2004 meeting is tied for third-most in team history.• In the most recent game, UU led 21-0 in the second quarter before hanging on the rest of the way. The Blue Knights stuffed a potential game-tying 2-point try with under four minutes remaining.• Urbana’s first touchdown of the 2018 season came on a 85-yard TD pass, which was longest passing play in the MEC last season.• Urbana’s last punt return for a touchdown also came against the Hilltoppers in the 2018 opener, an 83-yard gallop by Khaliq Muhammad.
notable individual performances• Last year, wideout Jesse Bray hauled in his first TD as a Blue Knight on a 47-yard reception. • Former wideout and kick returner Trevon Saunders pulled down a 69-yard TD grab in the 2015 game.• Former QB Tajuan Green ran for 104 yards and two TDs, and passed for 161 with a TD in 2017.• Former QB DJ Mendenhall threw four TDs on 255 yards passing in the 2013 game, including three TD passes to WR Joe Webb, who had eight grabs for 141 yards.• Former All-American LB D’Gary Wallace had 15 tackles (8 solo) in the 2013 game. • Duray Hall had 15 tackles (11 solo), a sack and fumble recovery in the last appearance at West Fami-ly Stadium. Chris Richardson had 10 tackles (9 solo).• Mikal Toliver debuted as a Blue Knight in the 2017 game with two sacks and pair of forced fumbles.
