Co-op ExperienceDuring the summer of 2014 I had the opportunity to Co-op at the City of Kettering, near Dayton, Ohio. I had the opportunity to assist the city planners in the creation of their new form-based pattern zoning districts as seen to the right. These codes, when implemented will be in addition to the existing zoning codes already in place. I also worked to categorize all the buildings within the buiness zoning districts as well as create hypothetical buer zones between restuarants and food truck selling poins as seen below. This is in case the city wants to add such buers, or other regulatory rules into the city code.

A big part of my job at the city of kettering was doing researchand evaluation for the Planning Commision cases as well as the Board of Zoning Appeals cases. In many cases I would have to go out into the eld in order to take pictures and do on site evaluation. The pictures on the left are examples of some ofthe eld work I did. After returning from the eld I would helpto compile the reports that would be presented. A second job I had was looking up old landscape plans tomake sure that the plans that were in place were being upheldby the occupants. I specically looked at planned unit developments. Some of the plans found can be seen on the left.

At the end of the year I succesfully organized a t-shirt drive, through every city department. I eneded up raising 119 t-shirts which I took with me to Haiti and gave out on my last mission trip to Haiti. The t-shirts as well as the poster I created for the drive can be seen below.

Geographic Information Systems

These are examples of work I created in GIS class.Through the class I accomplished the basicsof GIS as well as gaininga knowledge of its applications and how it isused in real world situations. I also learnedhow to use it as a tool for planning.

OTR Neighborhood Analysis

6

The nal project in our GIS coursework was to create an updated database of information for the Over-The-Rhine neighborhood of Cincinnati. The class was split into nine dierent groups who were in charge of updating the land use, address, and year built for every building in our area of OTR. We also had toupdate the building les if there was a new building or if a building had been demolished since the last time the information was updated. My team had the northern-most part of OTR. Our results can be seen in the maps below.

Site Planning

Land Use Streets

In our current studio we are working on site analysis and development. Our hypothetical development will occur in the Mount Airy Forest. To this date we have done analysis of the surrounding areas to gauge the sort of development we should create. We have also started on the context analysis of the forest itself in order to locate which areas within the forest will be the best for development. The surrounding maps look to convey the information we have found. In the future we will use this information in oder to pick our site of development.

Mt. Adams Work done in the spring of 2014 in studio. Teams in studio were taskedwith doing an analysis of a certain neighborhood’s business district within Cininnati. We were then tasked with creating recomendations for improvments for the NBD. This studio required using GIS for annalysisas well as look at the built environment using tools such as AutoCADto create elevation models and Sketch Up to create 3D models.

Haiti Mission Trip

My rst mission trip to Haiti through Sigma Chi Fraternity occured during a week in August 2013. Eight of us worked with a Hatian work crew to create a house for a woman and her daughter who is disabled. They had been homeless since the earthquake of 2010.

Haiti Mission Trip

My second mission took place during a week in August 2014. this time we brought seventeen people along. We worked on the renovation of a medical clinic which serves over 200,000 Haitiansin the poorest part of Port-Au-Prince. One afternoon we visited a site that was soon to become a high school. We had the chance to look at the building and site plans while we were there. Two of the members and I who had gone on the trip the year before also got a chance to visit the family of the house we had built the year before.
