Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is a public uni-

versity, funded by the central Government

of India. It was established by Sir Syed Ahmad

Khan as Madrasatul Uloom Musalmanan-e-Hind

Higher Education World University Rankings.

Department of Geography

The Department of Geography, Aligarh Muslim Uni-

versity, Aligarh was established in 1924 which is the

oldest department of Geography in the Indian sub-

continent. Since then the department is catering geo-

graphical knowledge at under-graduate, post-graduate

level and pursuing research in almost all the fields of

Geography, especially in Agriculture, Rural-Urban

Development, Population, Environment and Planning.

Department has got support under UGC-SAP DRS-

III (UGC) and FIST-Level I (Department of Science

& Technology-DST).

Presently, there are more 700 students in the depart-

ment studying at the undergraduate and postgraduate

level besides around 90 students are pursuing their

Ph.D. The thrust areas of the department are Agricul-

ture, Regional Development, Urban Geography, Envi-

ronmental Studies, Population Geography, Social Ge-

ography, Transport Geography and Urban Environ-

ment.

The AMU Geographical Society publishes a bi-

annual peer reviews Journal ‘The Geographer’ since

1926, which is the oldest journal of geography in In-

dia. The faculty and research students are actively

engaged in innovative research in varied field of ge-

ography. Faculty members and research scholars have

contributed in the field of academic research by pub-

lication of large number of research papers in Nation-

al & International journals with hundreds of citations.

Infrastructure

The Department has a well-equipped Remote Sens-

ing & GIS laboratory with 40 computers, 10

handheld GPS, one DGPS, 1 Total Station, audio

visual equipment and lecture halls.

Lodging Facilities

The University has it own guest house with AC/non-

AC rooms and has 24x7 wi-fi facility across the cam-

About the Summer School in Geospatial Technol-

ogies (Level 2: Urban Planning)

Winter School (Level 2 - Advanced) on Urban Plan-

ning focusses on developing capacity and enhancing

the perspectives of the geospatial aspects of Urban

Planning.

Urbanization has emerged as one of the most serious

challenges before the planners for sustainable devel-

opment. Due to unplanned growth, cities are con-

fronted into complex problems such as degradation

of environment, acute shortage of drinking water,

insanitation, health and hygiene, lack of amenities

and facilities, social insecurity, improper disposal of

waste air, water and noise pollution.

Geospatial technology has emerged as one of the

most important state-of -art for planning and develop-

ment, especially the high resolution satellite data

helps to analyse the existing trend and pat-

tern as well as future implications through

geo-spatial modelling.

through geo-spatial modelling. The proposed pro-

gramme will benefit the stakeholders like urban

planners, policy makers, academicians and research-

ers through deliberations and practical work. This

will also provide an insight to recent trends in urban

planning with the help of geospatial technologies i.e.

remote sensing, GIS and GPS.
