• FutureGen was a US government project announced by President George W. Bush in 2003• The initial plan involved the construction of a near zero-emissions coal-fueled power plant• Planned to produce hydrogen and electricity while using carbon capture and underground storage• In December 2007, Mattoon Township, Coles County, was chosen as the site for the plant from among four finalists in Illinois and Texas• The goal was to prove that coal could be burned to make electricity while the carbon dioxide that makes coal a pollution problem could be captured and safely stored• The project promised 1,300 construction jobs and 150 high-skilled positions • However In 2010, after a number of setbacks, the city of Mattoon backed out of the project• Sorry To Break Your Hopes!
