INTRODUCTIONKaitlin is a second year Masters of Urban and Regional Planning student at University of California - Los Angeles, concentrating on urban design. She is focused on re-imagining streets and public spaces, through both design interventions and programming, and is particularly interested in community-based design and accessibility to public space and community participation in design planning.

CONTENT
In her future professional work, Kaitlin hopes to continue increasing underserved neighborhoods’ access to open space by recapturing and rethinking underused spaces like vacant lots and sidewalks. She hopes to accomplish this by designing and planning public space with community members, rather than simply for them.

As an intern with Mayor Garcett’s Great Streets Initiative, I led production of visual materials including renderings, documents, grants, a new Great Streets website, outreach materials, and maps. The other portion of my work consisted of event coordination and project management, and assisting with developing grant programs.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH TOOLSWhile working at the Great Streets studio in the Office of Mayor Garcetti, I lead the development of visual outreach materials.
After surveying the community members of Mar Vista, I pulled together the infographic featured on this page as a clearer way to present the data we collected to the public.
I also produced interactive community engagement tools for specific streets and events. I helped brand, program, and design materials for [Re]visit [Re]seda Blvd, a series of events that took place on the Great Streets segment of Reseda Boulevard in Northridge.
The booklet featured on page 7 was used as a “passport,” encouraging community members to explore Reseda Boulevard by foot or bike, and support their local businesses.

I was given a number of opportunities to lead event coordination, such as community workshops, receptions, and pop-up activities. I acted as project lead for a month-long series of streets and public space-themed events, Eyes on the Street LA.
Most noteworthy was my effort as project lead for Great Streets’ PARKing Day 2015 parklet on Hollywood Boulevard. In collaboration with HR&A and the Hollywood Business Improvement District, I designed a parklet that featured seating and shade, as well as Van Beethoven (LA Phil’s virtual reality experience), puppy adoption from LA Animal Services, and face-to-face time with the Mayor. Our Lights-Camera-Parklet! was featured in Parking Professional Magazine in November 2015.

While pursuing a Master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning, I am focusing on public space design and accessibility. Wherever possible, I have framed my academic projects around public space and in groups, I have taken on roles that include design (graphics, layouts, drawings) wherever possible.
My capstone project (in-progress) involves producing a public space toolkit and a community participation process for Tacubaya, Mexico City in partnership with CTS EMBARQ.

Seminar on Public Space: The final assignment was to design a parklet for the city of Pasadena. I was in charge of my team’s drawings. In alignment with the city of Pasadena’s objective to create a pedestrian-friendly experience within its Playhouse District, my team designed a theatre-themed parklet for Colorado Boulevard. The proposed parklet, which encompassed two angled parking spaces, included an elevated stage for live performances, public seating, drought tolerant landscaping, bicycle parking, and a shade canopy with the Pasadena rose pattern.
My team incorporated the Playhouse District’s mission to “promote culture, commerce, and community in the heart of Pasadena” by emphasizing the importance of live performance and community engagement within the parklet.

SITE PLANNINGMy team’s proposal, connectLA, aimed to connect four distinct neighborhoods of downtown Los Angeles - Little Tokyo, Skid Row, the Toy District, and the Art District - while maintaining their unique indentities and satisfying the needs of local residents.
Our interventions were based upon an extensive site analysis and conversations with community stakeholders and residents. They revolved around four themes: the public realm, the built environment, land use, and the enacted environment. Through connectLA, my team hoped to instill a stronger connection among these neighborhoods to create a vibrant communityt that benefits the residents, neighbors, and visitors of each district.
My role in the project was to produce graphics and drawings. This example was our site located on Omar Street between 3rd and 4th in Skid Row. Here, we proposed basic pedestrian amenities, a shared street, moble sanitation stations, a flex park space for daytime activation and safer nighttime sleeping, and a gallery to showcase Skid Row artists’ work.

My team was tasked with producing an improved Community Design Overlay for Pacoima. Additionally, we had to choose one of Metro’s proposed transit alternatives for the Van Nuys corridor. My team chose to propose a median-running Bus Rapid Transit system, alongside a road diet that would allow for additional public space to be captured.
My work on the project consisted of writing design guidelines for the CDO, as well as producing a portion of our graphics.

PARKINGCGuideline 7: Provide safe, secure, and consolidated parking at the rear of buildings that limits the number of surface parking lots.
Standard 7a: Whenever possible, consolidated rear parking shall be accessed through safe, activated pedestrian passthroughs.
Standard 7b: Whenever possible, locate shared parking entrances for mid- block projects at an alley in the rear of the property. Standard 7c: Where surface parking lots cannot be avoided, face lighting inward and downward into parking areas, and away from residential property.
Standard 7d: Consolidated parking structures should use design tactics that beautify and conceal them (e.g. green walls).
Guideline 8: Incorporate landscape features into parking areas.
Standard 8a: Whenever possible, landscape surface parking lots to shade, at maturity, fifty percent (50%) or more of the surface area of a parking lot (see examples in Figure 12 below).
Standard 8b: Tree-planting in surface lots shall rely on the drought-tolerant tree selection guide included herein. Each individual parking lot shall be planted with a variety of tree species.
Standard 8c: Maintain all landscaped areas.

This joint Architecture and Urban Planning course was the final piece of a three-year project by CityLab and Gensler. My team’s project, Slip City, looked at the intersection of live, work, and play. Slip City was a more conceptualized play on the “artist-in-residency” model, consisting of a wider variety of industries, activities, and spatial designs. My role was concept design, lay outs, and graphics. After the completion of our course, the entire project was on exhibit at the A+D Museum in July 2015.
