URANQUINTY PROGRESS GROUP – DECEMBER 2016
Summer has finally arrived after a long delay and Christmas is almost upon us. We wish everyone in the community a safe and happy holiday season and every success in 2017.

ECO-CULTURAL GARDEN PROJECT The new garden opposite the school is now in construction phase. Once funding was secured the committee was able to engage Peter Ingram, who has now made a start on the paths and paving. Peter is hoping to have the paths finished in early December. The excess soil from the path will be used to build up other areas; the small bridges have been made and a few native plants have already been discovered on the block. Riverina Water has enclosed the bottom of the tower and made some alterations to concrete structures on the site to make them more attractive. There will be plenty of progress in coming weeks.

This year’s concert was a great success, we were pleased to welcome the Minor Details Choir from the Riverina Conservatorium of Music who performed for the audience and then encouraged everyone to sing along to their favourite Christmas carols. Santa arrived via the RFS firetruck and the Uranquinty Public School P&C and Uniting Church did a great job with supplying food for everyone. Our thanks to the school choir and all our sponsors, particularly Origin and Riverina Water who are great supporters of our community.
MOBILE BLACKSPOT COVERAGE Following submissions made in January 2016, decisions regarding rural and regional mobile blackspot coverage were announced on 1 December. Unfortunately, Uranquinty was not successful in gaining funding and all we can do now is apply for Round 3 and hope that Telstra is able to improve the existing service from their mobile tower. UPA is liaising with Telstra and Michael McCormack’s office and Round 3 will open sometime in 2017. We will keep the community informed of any developments. KERBSIDE WASTE COLLECTION Wagga Wagga City Council have advised that the timeline for new contracts for kerbside waste collection has been extended to October 2017 and they will keep the community informed of developments. In the meantime there will be no changes to current kerbside collections. COMMUNITY SAFETY GROUP

Also, a special mention to the Rural Fire Service and their pumps. Their responsiveness to the situation with personnel diligently manning the trucks to get the water to the good side of the levy was a great effort. Our radios worked well to keep everyone in touch with each other and we were very appreciative that the SES kept a close eye on the village. The container should soon be at the Men’s Shed site to store safety equipment – courtesy of an NRMA grant via SES. We are always looking for volunteers to join the team, if you would like to receive an invite to the next meeting please send details to [email protected]
Please keep an eye on the website for regular updates on what is happening in the village. If you have anything you
would like to post on the website (i.e events, flyers, community and business news), please make contact either via
the contact page on the website, or send us an email. Bookings for the Community Hall can also be made via the
website or email. We are taking a break over summer and the next UPA meeting will be in February 2017 – everyone
is welcome to attend and make a contribution.

We were planning to host an open day but due to flood activity still affecting many areas around the region it was felt that we should postpone this event until the New Year. The team came together to help protect our village on two occasions and was on alert/monitoring over various days during our wet months. We are very lucky to have wonderful village volunteers available to fill sandbags and pitching in to help in many ways.
Multi-Purpose Sports Court Opening We are so appreciative of the considerable support of Origin Energy to provide our students with this amazing new artificial turfed sports court, complete with reversible Netball/Basketball poles and a removable tennis net. The students have made good use of the court over the last term and this will be an asset for all students at our school over many years to come.
‘Uranquinty’s Got Talent!’ Our biennial school concert was another huge success with all students K-6 taking part in the singing, dancing and drama. We strolled through the music of the decades and were reminded of hits from Elvis, Spice Girls, Queen, The Beatles and many more.

NAIDOC Celebrations This year our students travelled to the Riverina Environmental Education Centre to celebrate Aboriginal culture. Our students listened to stories, handled artefacts, threw boomerangs, built Gunyahs, played Didgeridoos, painted outback scenes and made Johnny Cakes. We appreciate the assistance of Origin Energy who provided the transport costs for this event.
CPR Training Origin Energy has ensured that each year our students are trained in basic first aid and emergency care. This year students simulated making a call to 000, experienced bandaging techniques and practiced CPR on manikins. Our students are well prepared in the event of an emergency.
Footy Colours Day / Jump Rope for Heart This year we combined these two fundraising initiatives and had a wonderful sporty day. Our students raised money for the Cancer Council by wearing their favourite footy gear. They then went on to demonstrate their jumping skills and complete the Jump Off! Our students raised over $1300 for The Heart Foundation which was a huge effort for a small school.
Mini-Olympics Our school joined together with the Wagga Wagga Community of Small Schools to celebrate a Mini-Olympics at the end of last term. Students from Collingullie, Kapooka, Ladysmith and Tarcutta joined us to form countries and mixed teams competed in novelty Olympic themed events all day such as track, equestrian, fencing, pole vault and swimming. Thank you to the P&C who provided delicious catering on the day.
Thank you to all our supporters this year who have made 2016 a wonderful year of essential learning and extra-curricular events. Our P&C have worked hard to provide many extra opportunities for our students and improvements around the school. Many thanks also to Origin Energy for all the support and extra resources they have given the students this year.
We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a safe & Happy New Year!
Uranquinty Preschool News
As the preschool year comes to an end we will finish the year with our an-
nual concert and gallery night. This year our theme is Australia. All the
children’s work uses recyclable materials.
Recently, we enjoyed a visit from Mel and her dog Envy. This is a gov-
ernment funded program that teaches children how to be responsible with
dogs. All the children practised asking if they could pat the dog and then
used the ‘sausage roll’ hand position for the dog to smell their hands be-
fore patting. We are also looking forward to another visit from Mark Sad-
dler (Wiradjuri Man) next week. Mark will be here to teach us some
more about Aboriginal culture and we will also do some Aboriginal art.
We will soon farewell some of our children that will be going on to
school. We wish these children all the best for their new adventures at
school. We are looking forward to meeting some new friends who will
start in 2017.
The Start Strong Funding Model which will take affect in 2017 has given
us the funding to reduce the fees. In 2017 our 4 year old fees will be
$25.00 per day. Our 3 year old fees will be $30.00 per day. Please con-
tact Louise on 6922 9787 for any enquiries. The preschool will be open
Wednesday – Friday 8.30 am to 4.00 pm
This term we have all enjoyed the sunshine playing outside and some Christmas craft. We are all looking forward to our Christmas party on the 18th with many yummy things to eat and a visit from our favourite man in red. Uranquinty Playgroup is run by the community and anyone with children 0-5 years can join in on a Tuesday morning between 10-12am. Grandparents, parents, carers or even those visiting the town would be warmly welcomed for a cuppa and kids can play. We will have between Christmas and the New Year off and we will be returning on the 3rd Jan. Older siblings are more than welcome to join us during the holidays. Merry Christmas and a happy and safe new year to all!
