PRESIDENT
Shawn Teoh Thuan Song
Hey guys! I'm Shawn and I am doing my 3rd year of ChemicalEngineering. Being in Australia does make me grow fond of home, butUQMSA has filled up this emptiness for me. To me, what makesUQMSA different from other clubs in UQ is be-cause of the people init. Nothing beats the sense of belonging and warmth of UQMSA (notto promote the club, but hey, that's what many others say as well ;)).Trust me, sometimes you might feel that you are not in Australia atall. Spread your wings and adventure, don't worry if you fall, causeUQMSA will always be there (not starting a poem here, just trying tosay that UQMSA is a good starting point to get to know people andeven lifelong friends)! So do join us and embark an exciting journey inSunshine State! Far from home, but close to heart.
The only thing that does not change is change itself

Hi, my name is Shiet Siabut most people just call me Sia. I’ll be your social convenor (alongside Michelle) for 2015. I am a second year chemical engineering student. I’m just a normal girl from Kelantan (NOT Kuantan). Like all Malaysians, I love good food. I am sure we can all be really close friends. *wink*
A smile is the shortest distance between two people. So if you see me, don’t be afraid/shy to smile. If you have any questions/doubts, feel free to ask me and I will try to help you in any way I could. UQMSA is here to make you feel at home, so don’t hesitate to talk to the committee members! --Victor Borge
Sup guys! I’m Michelle, third year in Bachelor of Science majoring in Food Science and Nutrition and I’m your social convener this year =). I do love sports even though my locomotion is not the best nor gifted. I’ve doing mostly ultimate frisbee in Brisbane and I’m always up to do any other sports! [as long as it gets me moving =P]
Short, quite talkative, easygoing, adventurous and friendly are probably my characteristics, based on my judgement, but feel free to approach me if you think otherwise! XD I’m looking forward to meet new people and mingle around with you guys! Don’t be shy to come and approach me cause by approaching people, that’s how you make friends and expand your connections. This is what I have learnt when I got here. If you have done nothing you would get nothing but anything can lead to something. Enough with the philosophical talk, see you guys soon ! =D

I'd like to wish all you newcomers good day and welcome to Brisbane. Word of caution: Do not be startled by the number of wild Turkeys roaming around the campus and remember they are friends not food.
A few things I enjoy doing in my spare time include playing the guitar, singing, cooking and baking (although I usually don't eat what I bake heh). I also enjoy trying out Break-fast / Brunch places around Brisbane So if you ever need a breakkie partner CALL ME hahah. I also love to talk about everything and anything under the Sun, so feel free whenever you need someone to talk to, especially if you're feeling even the slightest bit homesick :)) Once again Welcome to Brisbane and I hope to see fresh faces very verysoon! SPONSORSHIP CONVENORS
Lee Fang Yi Oon Chu Hean
I am Fang Yi, currently in my 2nd year pharmacy at UQ. I am from Penang and I love to eat especially laksa. :) I am very grateful that I get to know many good friends here. Joining UQMSA is the one of the greatest thing that I have done in Brisbane.
My life in Australia will be truly memorable and unforgettable by par-ticipating in this club. I hope that everyone will have the same feeling too!! All the best to all of you. Fighting!
Hey peeps! As the sponsorship convener, one of my tasks is to ensure that our members will have the chance to get all sorts of discounts (perk of being a unistudent!) wherever you go, cause our sponsors are pretty much located throughout Brisbane. Just a friendly reminder, remember to cultivate a habit of showing your membership card when paying for meals. Sometimes I only realize the shops do offer discounts after payment, aaarrrggg...
Now jumping to other topic, personally I enjoy playing soccer (yep aussiecall it soccer haha), reading and watching movies during free time. I have to say UQ is quite an awesome uni where you get to meet lots of new faces from all over the world, as we have quite a high number of international students (actually just like other Australian unis). The thought of arriving in Brisbane for the first time was still like a thing of yesterday, and now look at me, I am already in my second year. How time flies! Remember to make full use of your time here, don’t be afraid to meet out with other people, while joining some activities to enrich your life! When you come to think about it, this is what uni life is all about. I wish you the best of luck in whatever you are pursuing. We will make sure to do our best to bring you the benefits and activities you will never experience elsewhere.
When life gives you a hundred reasons to cry, show life that
you have a thousand reasons to smile.

UQMSA for an awesome year
ahead! Stay tuned!
As always, we’ll kick off our semester with our MARKET DAY! It’s always lovely seeing fresh new faces who are all excited to be part of our university. Brings back many memories to our first day of university.
In collaboration with UQ Union, the Bazaar of Light was held in conjunction with the celebration of the Lunar New Year Festival. Various clubs and societies set up stalls for selling food and for games.
Makan Night is an event which is held fortnightly over the semester. During this day, Malaysian food is sold to curb everyone’s cravings.
Welcoming BBQ and Explorace were held around Brisbane city and Southbank to let new and returning members to mingle with each other. Selected members were required to complete one task at each checkpoint which was located at many iconic places in Brisbane.
Australians love their coffee. To show cast the Australian cultures as well as to let members connect to other members and committees, UQMSA brought 60 members to different cafes around Brisbane.
It’s hot around this time in Brisbane so UQMSA decided to bring our members to Stradbroke Island to beat the heat. Members were split into 2 teams. While one was surfing, the other went to point lookout to enjoy the breathtaking scenery and delicious gelato!
The Malaysian Summit of Australia (MASA) was held in Brisbane this year. UQMSA was proud to collaborate with the Malaysian Student Council of Australia (MASCA) to organise the closing ceremony. This was held as a farewell ceremony to all the participants as well as to celebrate the hard work of every one involved in MASA.
We live in an image-conscious, visual society, where certain concepts of beauty and attractiveness continue to pervade our lives. LEMAK Workshop was held to provide a chilled-out, zero-judgment, intimate space for discussing and sharing issues pertaining to our body image and appearance. The response was surprisingly very good considering that this is a non-academic related workshop.
UQMSA collaborated with UQU in Cultural Fiesta!
This is the day where we can flaunt Malaysian cultures, traditional food and traditional games to non-Malaysians!
We had a Malaysia various costume fashion show as well!
In collaboration with MASCA Queensland, we introduced a workshop provide students with the chance to gain first-hand insight into the job industry.
The events included guidance on writing resumes and interviews as well a social media connectivity.
Among the companies present were KPMG, Navitas, to name a few.
UQMSA was proud to be a part of the UQU Merriment Movement this year! It was organised by the Australian Red Cross in conjunction with UQU.
The Merriment Movement was a four day event including seminars and activities which targeted issues such as managing exam stress, anxiety and depression, healthy eating, to name a few.
UQMSA prepared coconut bowling at our booth to show our support to the event.
This year’s Mamak Night was bigger, bolder and better! A change of venue meant an increase in the number of participants to 200 instead of the usual 150 people. We had Malaysian food and freshly-served Roti Canaifrom Dapur Dahlia, one of our Diamond sponsors.
UQMSA was proud to be part of this event which served to let people experience the traditions and customary practices of Ramadan, with the Muslim community. This was organised by UQU alongside participating clubs and societies.
