The first three sections of the survey are standard questions that all schools ask. There are three additional questions about homework and one question where you can comment about any element of our school. The homework questions will give us valuable feedback on our Homework Policy. Our current policy is on our website and is sent as an attachment with this newsletter. Teachers and Year 5 and 6 students are also completing a survey with standard questions with extra questions about homework. The results will be compared to the previous survey in 2014. Any issues that are identified will have a planned, documented response. Doing the Survey Unless you log on from a different device, you can only do one survey per family. If you have more than one child at Upper Swan you have to decide which child you are going to do the survey about. The survey works best if it is done only once per family. You have until May 31 to complete it. Last time we had 27 responses. This time it would be nice to think we can get close to 75. (We have 319 families in our school). Survey Address To complete the survey you can “control click” from here, although it may be more rel iable to “control click” from the message pane of your email. https://www.schoolsurvey.edu.au/s/bHRH87Ax Fundraising This year we are running three types of fundraising. The first two are the same as they have been for several years. The third has happened a few times over the years, but not every year. 1. P & C Fundraising events that raise money for expanding school resources. Events like the Easter Raffle; Bunnings Sausage Sizzles; Mothers’ Day Stall; Subway; Toastie Tuesday and so on. Just last week the P & C committed $9500 to buy resources for Technologies Education; Music and Social Sciences (HASS).

Parent Satisfaction Survey All families have the opportunity to complete a school satisfaction survey. Survey Address To complete the survey you can “control click” from here, although it may be more reliable to “control click” from the message pane of your email. https://www.schoolsurvey.edu.au/s/bHRH87Ax Fundraising This year we are running three types of fundraising. The first two are the same as they have been for several years. The third has happened a few times over the years, but not every year. 1. P & C Fundraising events that raise money for expanding school resources. Events like the

Easter Raffle; Bunnings Sausage Sizzles; Mothers’ Day Stall; Subway; Toastie Tuesday and so on. Just last week the P & C committed $9500 to buy resources for Technologies Education; Music and Social Sciences (HASS).

2. Student Council Fundraising. Every year, under the guidance of Miss Kongras, our Year 6

student councillors coordinate fundraising events then donate the money to a chosen charity or not for profit organisation. The events are usually dress days held two or three times per year and there is the Golden 5 Award. We do this to encourage all students and families to develop citizenship skills and for our school to develop relationships in the wider community. This year we are raising money for Karakamia Wildlife Sanctuary.

3. Year 6 Graduation Dinner. This has been ‘revived’ for 2017. In previous years our P & C made a donation to the Year 6 dinner. Under updated state rules for P & Cs, this is no longer allowed. With the permission of our P & C, a separate committee of year 6 parents is raising money for the dinner. The money raised is to keep the cost down, enabling all students to attend at reasonable cost.

The Cookie Dough fundraiser is their first activity. Like all fundraising events, your support and participation is optional. With the dinner, the great majority of Year 6’s have spent all or most of their education at Upper Swan. They have contributed a lot to our school in many ways; particularly in leadership roles in years 5 and 6. Most children in our school will continue on to year 6, and most children and families will eventually be in the position of raising money for graduation.

City of Swan – School Parking Inspection The City of Swan’s Community Safety Advocate conducted “education patrols” during Term 1. The focus of these patrols was to inform people of the parking requirements surrounding the school and issue cautions when necessary. At Upper Swan the following cautions were issued.

0 Parking Regulation Signage Offences

6 Footpath Parking Offences

0 Intersection/Obstruction Offences Considering our complex issues, this is a reasonable result. From Term 2 the Community Safety Advocate team will commence enforcement patrols around the schools and infringement notices will be issued to alleged offenders. On a different note, we are making inquiries with the Education Department on the possibility of leasing neighbouring land to increase the availability of safe parking places. Ines McKeon – Cricket Star Year 5 student, Ines McKeon, has been selected in the W.A. Cricket Association’s Under 13 Female Development Squad for the 2017/18 season. This is an outstanding achievement and one that Ines should be very proud of. Ines will have the opportunity to prepare for the national school championships in January, 2018. I wish Ines well in making the most of her talent and the opportunities she will have. Billy Attwood – John Forrest Secondary College Cricket Academy Billy is a Year 6 student at our school. Billy successfully applied for a place in John Forrest’s Cricket Academy for his secondary schooling. He had to attend a ‘skills’ trial and also show the selectors he has a preparedness to work hard as well as demonstrate leadership qualities. Billy applied himself to the tasks extremely well and I congratulate him on his success. Darling Range Sports College (Forrestfield) – Year 7 Programs Sent as an attachment with this newsletter is a flyer from Darling Range Sports College. The flyer has information about sport programs and upcoming trials. The Darling Range website has the enrolment packages for completion prior to trials. http://darlingrangesc.wa.edu.au/enrolments/

Website Updates The term 2 calendar, date reminders and Dress Code policy have been updated. http://www.upperswanps.wa.edu.au/ P & C Scholastic Book Fair This Week The book fair runs in the library from this Wednesday through to Friday morning. We appreciate the fabulous support you give your children in developing a love of reading. In doing so you help us earn credits that we use to buy new books for our library.

VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS

Voluntary Contributions for 2017 are $60.00 per child, per year. We do encourage payment of the Voluntary Contributions for your child/ren at the beginning of each school year, directly to the school office. Payments can be made via EFTPOS, cash or direct deposit into the school bank account. Reminder Statements of outstanding amounts will be issued at the beginning of each Term to parents. If you would like to make arrangements to pay instalments on either Contributions or Charges please contact Wendy Dailey on 9296 4622. Thank you to the families that have made payment to date. Your continued support enables us to provide the extra resources we need to enrich your child’s/ren’s learning. The money we collect is a vital part of our school budget. There is an expectation that all students pay for incursions/excursions, or make arrangements for a payment plan with classroom teachers or directly with the office. Charges for each optional activity should be paid into collection envelopes and placed into the collection tin outside reception. Permission slips should returned to the class teacher for their records.

EFTPOS FACILITIES For your convenience we have an EFTPOS machine in the front office for processing your payments.

PAYMENTS FOR INCURSIONS/EXCURSIONS Please complete all the sections on the yellow payment envelope, especially writing the full name of your child, to ensure that your payment is allocated to the correct child and event. Your co-operation is greatly appreciated. If paying for more than one child, they can all be put in the same envelope. Slips go to the teacher; money in envelopes goes in the black box outside admin.

PREPAYMENT OF 2017 CHARGES Last year the School Council approved a prepayment of charges only option for those parents that would like to make a lump sum payment at the beginning of the school year; i.e. excursion, incursion, swimming etc charges that are applied throughout the year. This would alleviate counting and handling of cash and will make it easier for families that operate under a cashless budget. Voluntary contributions will remain as in previous years, where there is an expectation parents will be able to pay at the beginning of the school year or on statements issued at the beginning of each term.
