‘... a model for all of us in every way.’

Today’s First Reading, Psalm and Gospel all relate to the way in which we are called to live in right relationship with God and with one another. What is referred to as the ‘Law’ is generally used as shorthand for the Torah – the first five books of the Bible – which first of all establishes the history of relationship between God and humanity through the books of Genesis and Exodus and then provides detailed instructions about how that relationship should be honoured and observed.

When Jesus speaks about the Law and the Prophets, he is deliberately including the extensive collection of prophetic writings that interpret the Law in terms of justice and right relationships with others as being a reflection of the right relationship with God.

By declaring that he has come not to abolish the Law and the Prophets, but to complete – or fulfil – them, Jesus is making it perfectly clear that his ministry and teaching is in alignment with and in accordance with the historical tradition and he is not setting out to overthrow the Jewish tradition. Rather, throughout his ministry, Jesus repeatedly calls the people to be true to the teachings of old and to live them with integrity and dedication. His constant complaint is against those who live by the letter of the Law and ignore what we would call the spirit or intention of the Law. This is the root of his swipe at the shallow virtue of the scribes and Pharisees in today’s gospel. The criticism that Jesus levelled at these two groups was that their adherence to the Law made no room for the compassionate heart that the writings of the Prophets demanded.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word

‘Let the little children come to me and do not stop them;

for it is such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs’ Matt 19:14

The Liturgy of the Word with Children is truly a celebration of Liturgy. It is a prayerful celebration of God’s Word. It is a reflection on the way we live our lives in the light of God’s Word. It is not a lesson or simply an activity time with young children.

Our parish strives to offer this to our children: the Liturgy of the SAME Word but simplified for children to get the message from Scripture that we as adult do at Mass. How often have parents heard from their children ‘It’s boring!’ Children need to be engaged at an appropriate level and in a meaningful way. They return to participate in the Liturgy of the Eucharist with parents where they can see, feel and participate with the adult community, being immersed in the body of Christ.

This ministry has been operating in our parish through the generosity of leaders who have been faithful and generous with their time over quite a number of years and are ready for a well deserved break. Leaders work in pairs.

We are in need of more people willing to be trained in leading Children’s Liturgy at both St Bernard’s at 9.30 am and St Catherine’s at 8.30 am Sundays, except during school holidays. Volunteers would only be required to assist one Sunday per month. Upper Mt Gravatt Wishart Parish Workshop for those who plan and

preside at funerals

Liturgy Brisbane held a session in November for people involved in planning and presiding at funerals to explore the new Vatican Instruction To rise with Christ (on the burial of the deceased and the conservation of the ashes) and to discuss the challenges of celebrating funeral rites today. Participants found the session informative, enjoyable and helpful. This would be most helpful for Sacristans, Funeral coordinators, and Liturgical Ministers; Readers, Extraordinary Ministers of Communion and Musicians. Monday 20 March 7.00 pm to 8.30 pm Aspinall Centre, GPS entrance is 28 Klumpp Rd, UMG. Presenters:-

Catering: supper tea provided. Enquiries: Elizabeth Harrington [email protected].

UP FROM THE WATERS’ Prayer groups

One of our very own parishioners will feature in the Lenten Program this year. You will be inspired! All members of the parish are invited to join one of two group sessions. There are two options.

7.00 pm Tuesdays in Lent: 28 Feb, 7, 14, 21, 28 March & 4 April,

St Bernard’s Community Centre. OR 10.30 am Wednesdays in Lent:

1, 8, 15, 22, 29 March & 5 April, St Bernard’s Community Centre.

For all Christians this is a season for deep reflection and prayer to discern and review the ways we are living out our baptismal call to be ‘missionary disciples’ (Pope Francis). Sign on sheets available in our parish churches.

Bless your servant and I shall live and I will ever obey your word.
