Movie Review: HysteriaThis delightful little fi lm is based on true events in London in the 1880’s.After many jobs, the handsome Dr. Granville’s (Hugh Darcy) beliefs in modern medical theories have been shunned. He lands himself a job as an assistant to society’s Dr. Darymple who specialises in the female condition ‘hysteria’ - a catch all diagnosis that seems to be affecting most of the women in England.

Hysteria was an ailment which was treated with a rather hands-on approach. Demand for the treatment becomes so great that Dr. Granville just can’t keep up. In desperation he invents a machine that will solve his medical dilemma - the world’s fi rst vibrator.

Dr. Granville seems to fall into a promised marriage with Dr. Dalrymple’s youngest daughter, but he falls for her unconventional feminist sister, Charlotte (Maggie Gyllenhaal) who works with the underprivileged of London. She is often at odds with her father about where money should go for medical purposes.

Don’t be put off by the fact that this fi lm is set in the 1880’s. It is a rather unconventional witty, warm-hearted comedy with a touch of drama about real life issues relating to medical areas.

Rating 4.5 out of 5 stars.

4 - The Upper Hunter Entertainer - December 22 to December 28, 2012

UHCM Early Childhood MusicMusic is something to be fostered in all young children. It has been proven to contribute not only to their musical development, but to other important areas of intellectual, emotional and social learning and development. For example, involvement in music programmes and experiences has been demonstrated to facilitate the development of literacy skills in young children, as well as increase their vocabulary and aural language skills.

Children under the age of two are capable of engaging in vocal play, experimenting with sound (including manipulating simple musical instruments), and by 24 months are more than capable of singing short songs and improvising with known songs and even creating their own songs.

Give your child a head start during their formative years by enrolling them in a Babies, Toddlers or Pre-schoolers class with a specialist teacher at the Upper Hunter Conservatorium of Music. Available in Muswellbrook and Scone, classes introduce children to music through a variety of fun and engaging activities, including listening, dance, rhymes, singing and playing percussion instruments, and all in a friendly, nurturing and fun environment with children the same age. Festive Cheer Abounds at Local Homegrown and Handmade MarketBrisk trade and a strong crowd were the order of the day at Saturday’s Scone Homegrown + Handmade Christmas Market.Kerv café in Liverpool Street Scone hosted the popular quarterly market. More than 45 stallholders displayed a variety of wares that are sure to fi ll many a Christmas stocking and grace all number of dining tables across the festive season.

POWER FM broadcasted live from the markets and the radio commentators did a fantastic job in raising awareness of the Magic Garden project and associated market raffl e and silent auction; proceeds from which will assist in creating a safe sensory playground at Scone Public School for children with special needs.

The Magic Garden total fundraising efforts has nearly reached $100,000 and requires about $50,000 to complete the project. Anyone wanting to donate to the Magic Garden Project please contact Alicia Pittman 0427 451 988. If you are a builder / paver / landscaper or signwriter you may wish to assist with the construction works required to complete this project.

A cool summer handmade creations fashion parade was held during the day and $200 in market money draws found its way into the shopping bags of a number of lucky market-goers.

“The temperature was certainly warm but the turnout from both stallholders and buyers was fantastic,” said Amelia Wilkinson, director of the EVENT storeroom and organiser of the Scone Homegrown + Handmade

Market. “Stall holders spoke very positively of their overall sales and popular items were gone very early in the day! All of the Alexander Downs Christmas Hams were sold by 9am so they arranged another load from their premises at Merriwa to service the demand of market goers.”

Thank you to the Kerv Cafe management, John + Taka, and staff for being the host venue for the quarterly Scone Homegrown + Handmade in 2012. A big thank you to our market staff Danielle, Kylie & Fiona for their constant smiles and assistance and our delightful facepainter Sophie.

Merry Christmas to all our many market goers & stallholders.

The Perfect Cup of CoffeeBy Laura Sykes

Most people agree that the best way to start the morning is with a cup of hot, strong coffee. But for Vicki Asara, the love of coffee goes beyond simply liking the taste. It’s a passion.Originally a stay-at-home mum and self-professed dog washer, lawn and yard maintenance person and home reno queen, Vicki’s quest for the perfect cup lead her to establish caffe Mobilita, a mobile coffee stand that takes her to markets, regional shows, fi eld days and events both locally and further afi eld. Also the owner of Bridge Street Caffe Fresca, she says the name of her cafe says it all, “Translated from Italian it means - fresh coffee.”

“We roast our own blends for espresso and milk coffees. It is what we drink at home; our customers drink the same blend and also have the same blends available to them in the café.”

Also on offer at Caffe Fresca are a wide range of sandwiches, wraps, salads and sweet treats, all made with fresh produce and with gluten free options available. Fresh fruit, yoghurts and muesli are also on the menu ensuring there is something to tickle everyone’s tastebuds.

As well as being passionate about a good cup of coffee, Vicki enjoys the social side to the industry. “Everyday you meet different people from different walks of life and it is very rewarding when they come back and bring someone else back because they enjoyed the coffee and the service.”

And what is it that makes the perfect cup of coffee? According to Vicki, it’s not what, but who. “The person making the coffee should understand the beans they are using and they should understand the importance of the milk in the process.”

Caffe Fresca is located at Bridge Street Muswellbrook.

The 12 Do’s of ChristmasIt’s that time of the year where we can get carried away with the excesses of Christmas. We can reduce the amount of waste we produce when selecting and buying gifts for loved ones and also when preparing meals over the festive season.

The waste we generate over Christmas is a problem in our environment as it can become litter and easily enter our waterways as marine debris.

Problem waste such as unwanted plastic packaging is often not recycled properly and can end up in the landfi ll.

Landfi lls take up a lot of space, can fi ll quickly and also produce harmful greenhouse gases such as methane.

The Hunter-Central Rivers Catchment Management Authority CMA encourages everyone to check out Planet Ark’s 12 Do’s of Christmas website as it offers simple tips for making your family’s Christmas special while also being a little kinder to the environment.

Below are just some of Planet Ark’s 12 Do’s of Christmas, visit http://12dos.planetark.org for more hints and tips:

1. Buy good quality decorations that can be reused.

2. Give low impact gifts like experiences or practical durable items that meet a need.

3. Use paper wrapping rather than foil or plastic.

4. Compost or worm farm your unavoidable food scraps.

5. Sort and recycle all your aluminium cans, juice cartons, bottle and other packaging.

CMA staff would like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy and GREEN Christmas.

Regional Flagship Events ProgramGeorge Souris, M.P., Member for Upper Hunter has announced the successful events under the Regional Flagship Events Program for 2013. The Regional Flagship Event Program was established in 1996 to identify and assist the development of events that refl ect and contribute to the unique character of the tourism regions of NSW.

“The program has provided more than $5 million in funding to 224 separate events with one-year grants of $10,000 and also triennial funding of $20 per year for three years to support the marketing and advertising of events that refl ect the unique character of our regions and encourage visitors” Mr. Souris said

“Four events in the Upper Hunter region will receive funding including King of the Ranges Stockman’s Challenge and Bush Festival, WUPA@Wanaruah, Sculptures in the Vineyards and Hunter Valley Food and Wine Month under the Regional Flagship Events Program.

“Tourism is vital to regional NSW and the NSW Government is committed to supporting programs like this which help us to achieve the goal of doubling overnight visitor expenditure to NSW by 2010” Mr. Souris concluded.

Mine Hosts Tour For Local StudentsMore than 30 students from Muswellbrook, Gunnedah and Quirindi were given a close-up look at one of the region’s largest open cut coal mines last month. The students from the Muswellbrook Enrichment Centre, Gunnedah High School, St Mary’s High School Gunnedah and Quirindi High School were invited to tour the Mt Arthur Coal mine to learn about trade careers in the mining industry.

Mt Arthur Coal provided the tour students with information about career opportunities at the mine, including pathways from school to work through local apprenticeships and graduate programs.

During the tour, students visited the mine’s main lookout, the mine workshop electrical and engine repair bays, and climbed on-board a Liebherr truck and a dozer.

Michael White, General Manager Mt Arthur Coal, said Mt Arthur Coal was happy to give students fi rst-hand experience of what it is like to work at a mine.

“Visiting Mt Arthur Coal was a great opportunity for these students to learn more about trade skills that interest them and how they are applied in the mining industry.

“In particular, we showed them some of the equipment our qualifi ed tradespeople get to work with every day, some of which is unique to the mining industry.

“The tour was also an opportunity for the students to see an open-cut mine in operation and learn about the mining process.

“Mt Arthur Coal is committed to employing and training local people, and the tour was a good way to interact with local, enthusiastic students about career opportunities available with BHP Billiton, including the Mt Arthur Coal Apprenticeship program.

“With just over six months until we commence recruitment for our 2014 intake of apprentices, it is exciting to think that some of these students may become part of our workforce in the future,” Mr White said.

Celebrating 20 Years of International Day of People With DisabilityBy Laura Sykes

Monday the 3rd of December brought people from all over the community together to celebrate the 20th anniversary of International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD). Simpson Park came alive with sunshine, friendship and a common aim to promote an understanding of people who live with a disability and to encourage support and compassion for their rights, wellbeing and the contribution they make to society. Hundreds of such events were planned all over Australia in support of the worthy cause. The annual event was organised by Integrated Living and other organisations including the local emergency services, schools and charities. Muswellbrook PCYC generously donated the use of marquees for the day to provide shade for visitors who turned up for the fun-fi lled day.

Family friendly activities on the day included face painting with Sparkles the Clown - always a success with the kids; a sausage sizzle and drinks were provided by the Lions Club, while music and dance competitions kept everyone entertained. Staff and clients from Overton House attended, making new friends and helping out with activities while 2NM broadcasted continually throughout the day, conducting interviews including Chic Taylor (Overton House), workers and clients. Also helping out were staff and students from St Joseph’s Aberdeen, headed by Mandy Tobin.

Clients were also given the opportunity to experience the inside of both a police wagon and fi re truck, affording many delights for all.

Many thanks go to all who helped out or attended on the day, which was proclaimed by all as an outstanding success.

Volunteers Make a DifferenceVolunteers are the lifeblood of many community groups across the region. They are the people who provide countless hours of their time, skills, knowledge and experience to help make things happen that would otherwise not be possible. The Neighbourhood Centres, Scone and Aberdeen are no different to many other groups in the area and rely very much on volunteers to assist with things throughout the year. A regular band of volunteers has been involved in a variety of activities over the year at the

Neighbourhood Centre doing things such as, selling raffl e tickets, general offi ce work, helping out with BBQs and folding thousands of Bush Telegraph newsletters each four months.

The majority of our volunteers have been with us for many years, said Lee Watts, manager of the Neighbourhood Centre. The work they do for us is hugely appreciated and

I d like to thank each and every one of them for the support and assistance they have given us this year.

The Scone volunteers got together for the fi nal time in 2012 to fold the Bush Telegraph, meet with Santa to let him know what they would like for Christmas and to enjoy a Christmas Lunch hosted by the Neighbourhood Centre.

The local talent has been tipped to be a favourite when heavy metal takes over Scone for the Australia Day Bangover at the Thoroughbred Hotel Scone. Muswellbrook based band Evocatus have been ear marked as a band not to be missed, so if you can get there for one performance, let them be it.

Founded just this year by former Masters of Orion band members, Evocatus has grown and developed welcoming a new singer and an additional guitarist, who mesh together to produce all your favourite metals from Ferrite to Titanium and Lead.

The team of Nich Shields (vocals), Vaughan Jones (guitars/vocals), Philip Keong (guitars), Adam Watts (drums) and Heath Burkill (bass) love to play music, love to play together and are going to love playing for you.

Evocatus live by the philosophy that “A fresh combination of old school thrash, Euro power metal, and a good portion of heavy metal and you have an original yet familiar sound that will have your head banging.”

They have been described as being fresh, different, original and familiar and are sure to have an exciting line up of songs ready to bash out at the January 26 Bangover.

On Australia Day, Scone will not only feature one local band, but a smorgasbord of local talent including Texaw, Gutter Runner and Staunch, and it will all begin at 10am with the entertainment rolling into the late night.

Tickets are on sale for $30 at www.ticketbooth.com.au or will be available at the door for $40.
