History of UPMC Shadyside
UPMC Shadyside had its beginnings in 1866 as Homeopathic Medical and Surgical Hospital and
Dispensary in downtown Pittsburgh. In 1884 it moved to a new building, again downtown. The
same year, the hospital established western Pennsylvania’s first school of nursing.
In 1896, the hospital pioneered the first x-ray in western Pennsylvania. It was also among the
first to use Joseph Lister’s antiseptic techniques for surgery.
The hospital moved Shadyside in 1910, on a site just in front of its present location. In 1938, its
name was changed to Shadyside Hospital. The present building was erected in 1972, and it
became part of UPMC in 1997.
The hospital has a long legacy of leadership in cardiology and cardiac surgery. In the 1960s it
was an early adopter of the cardioverter to correct erratic heartbeats. In the next decades it
moved to the forefront of interventional cardiology, developing new catheters and performing
angioplasties. Shadyside Hospital had Pittsburgh’s first coronary care unit. Geriatrics also has a
strong legacy here; Shadyside Hospital boasted the nation’s first physician to be board certified
in geriatrics.
Geography and Demographics
Allegheny County, Pennsylvania
Allegheny County is an excellent example of how a county
overcame great adversity resulting from the demise of the steel
industry and how it built a new future through substantial economic change. The area was once
the steelmaking capital of the world. Now only about 4 percent of the labor force is employed in
primary and fabricated metals.
The backbone of the economic base is health care, education, high technology, light
manufacturing, professional services along with retail and wholesale trade. Allegheny County is
considered an international leader in the fields of chemical, plastic and nuclear research. Nearly
1,000 high technology companies are located in the Greater Pittsburgh area.
Film makers have chosen the area for moviemaking because of varied topography, unique
architecture, strong ethnic neighborhoods, cooperative government officials, low costs and
friendly environment. The new Pittsburgh International Airport is the largest airport complex
built since the construction of the Dallas-Fort Worth airport in 1974.
The airport is dubbed the “airport of the future” because of its advanced operational functions
and built-in expansion capabilities. Employment spin-offs from the airport will generate between
18,000-20,000 new jobs over a 10 year period. Allegheny County has more than 50 hospitals,
many of which are recognized
nationally as high-quality medical
research and teaching hospitals,
including a leadership position in
organ transplantation. New home
costs are about 16 percent less
than the national average while
the older housing stock is
excellent and well maintained.
The four rivers that flow through
Allegheny County now allow
fishermen to land game fish where
20 years ago there were lifeless
bodies of water.
The soot, smog and grime
associated with the booming steel
industry are a thing of the past. The area houses many local performing groups, orchestras,
choirs, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Ballet Theater and the Civic Light Opera. The region also
maintains more than 100 art galleries, historical landmarks and museums including the
Carnegie’s Museum of National History, Art Museum, Music Hall, Library and Science Center,
the Pittsburgh Zoo and the Pittsburgh Aviary.
There are three major sports teams in the county (Pirates, Steelers and Penguins). In the summer,
the Three Rivers Regatta draws more than 500,000 spectators. The Three Rivers Arts Festival
and the Pittsburgh Marathon are also major summer events.
Shadyside is a neighborhood in the East End of
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. It has
zip codes of both 15232 and 15206, and has
representation on Pittsburgh City Council by the
council member for District 8 (East Central
Neighborhoods). The nomenclature Shadyside
is drawn from the 19th century Pennsylvania
Railroad station in the area, named for its
unique shady lanes.
Shadyside is home to many of the more upscale
stores and boutiques in Pittsburgh including
Moda, Coach, Williams-Sonoma, and White House Black Market. The Shadyside Market,
owned by the Dupuis family of Baton Rouge, LA for more than 50 years, features fresh produce,
an on-site butcher, and a deli which is frequently packed by locals. Stores are located in two
corridors; one centers on Ellsworth Avenue, the other on Walnut Street.
Walnut has more stores that belong to national chains, including Gap (along with Baby Gap, Gap
Kids and Gap Body), Apple, J.Crew, American Apparel, Chico's, Victoria's Secret, Banana
Republic, Talbot’s Coach, and United Colors of Benetton. Local restaurants include Jitters,
Cappy's, Doc's, William Penn Tavern, and Pamela's.
Ellsworth tends to have smaller locally owned businesses, including Eons (a vintage store),
Gallerie Chiz (an art gallery, and beauty salons such as 5804, Capristo salon and Mikel's.
Ellsworth has a number of restaurants such as The Elbow Room, Bites and Brews, and Soba.
Ellsworth also features two of Pittsburgh’s' gay and gay friendly bars, Spin and 5801, formerly
known as New York, New York. Shadyside also features boutique Inns and Hotels like
Shadyside Inn Suites, The Inns On Negley, and Sunnyledge
Shadyside is also home to the Winchester Thurston School, as well as The Ellis School on Fifth
Avenue, Pittsburgh's only all-girl pre-K–12. Another neighborhood institution is Shadyside
Hospital, a member of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Additionally, Pittsburgh
Center for the Arts and Chatham University are located just across the northern edge of the
neighborhood in Squirrel Hill.
The Jam on Walnut is a summer concert series that features local and regional music concerts.
The concerts are held on the last Saturday of each summer month on the corner of Bellafonte and
Walnut Street. Proceeds from beer sales go to Cystic Fibrosis.
Since the 1920s, residential Shadyside has been home to a mix of affluent families, young
professionals, artists, students, and apartment dwellers. The residential areas of the neighborhood
include well-maintained Victorian mansions along with modern apartments and condominiums.
The neighborhood has a compact layout, which prevents most houses from having garages.
Public transportation is available via Port Authority bus system; a busway stop is conveniently
located in the neighborhood on Negley Avenue between Ellsworth and Centre avenues.
