U P L A N D T E R R A C E 1 Newsletter Principal’s Message Dear Upland Terrace Family, September has really flown by. Just as we are beginning to experience some cooler weather, the air conditioning construction project is coming to an end. We are anticipating that the construction clean-up process will be happening very soon. The school fundraiser for this year, the Entertainment Book sale, went very well. Thank you to everyone who worked to raise money for our school. We are planning on using the funds earned to support our SMART Board campaign and to purchase needed supplies for our school. Speaking of SMART boards, we have begun to get the word out that our goal is to put one SMART board in each classroom at Upland Terrace. There has been one on display at each of our last couple of events, and we actually have an interactive SMART board in two of our classrooms already. If you would like to learn more about what a SMART board is and does, please visit the following website: http://smarttech.com/us/Solutions/ Education+Solutions/Products+for +education/Interactive+whiteboards +and+displays/SMART+Board +interactive+whiteboards/800+for +education Donations are being accepted! Please continue to help make our parking lot safe for our students. We are having a small bit of difficulty in our west parking lot during drop off and pick up times. I would like to ask all parents of students who attend Upland Terrace Elementary and Preschool to park in a parking stall if you are leaving your car. Please DO NOT leave your vehicle in our drive through lane unattended. This causes our lot to get backed up and creates an unsafe situation for pedestrians. Be aware that an informational letter will be coming home with your student(s) about Granite District’s Gifted and Talented Program. This letter will contain information about testing that will take place before the winter break for grades 2-6, and continue in grades k-1 after the break. Please direct questions to myself or Mrs. Gardner, our school’s G/T facilitator. In October we will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week with many exciting activities to educate students about the dangers associated with drugs and alcohol, and begin providing them with strategies to “Say No”. We will also have an assembly about internet safety. School pictures are on the Oct. 24 th and the Halloween Parade will be on Wed., Oct. 31 st . No school on Oct. 18-19 for fall recess. Thank you to everyone for making our first SEP conference of the year a giant success. Having wonderful parents and guardians supporting our students is essential to our success as a school!! T H E P TA S C O O P ! We made it through our first month of school. Hooray! A few points to review:

• T-shirt's will continue to be on sale for $10. If you didn't get one during SEP conferences, they can be bought in the main office at the school.

• Due to the early SEP's schedule, we were unable to coordinate for a book fair. We WILL do the Scholastic Book Fair with the next conferences in February.

• Volunteer Hours-  For grant applications and school awards please document your hours at our school.  This also includes those who need someone at home so you can come in and help at Upland.  These totals are extremely valuable in showing our parent and community support.

! Thank you to everyone for your cooperation and patience. Our school is wonderful in how we pull together.Sincerely,

Susan Parker

Did you know that International Walk to School Day involves communities from more than 40 different countries walking and biking safely to school on the same day?

We can work together to clean up our environment by walking & biking to school. This can reduce congestion and air-pollution emissions.

Check out Upland’s safe walking route.

Thank you for participating in the annual walk to school days. It was great seeing all the families walking together.

As you know, Walk to School Day is an annual event that promotes walking and bicycling for several reasons:

• Physical activity

• Teaching safe pedestrian and bicycling skills to children

• Awareness of how walkable & bikeable a community is and where improvements can be made

• Concern for environment

• Reducing traffic congestion, pollution and speed near schools

• Sharing time with community leaders,

The testing window for placement in Granite School District’s Advanced Learner Programs isOctober 15 – December 14 for grades 2-6 and January 3 – February 25 for kindergarten and first grade. Testing at Upland Terrace will occur in November and December for grades 2-5 and at a different time to be announced for 6th graders entering junior high. It is not necessary to have your child tested each year; however, children who want to be considered for placement in a third grade advanced learner cluster group must be tested in second grade. Students in grades K-5 who would like to be considered for the Advanced Learning Center Programs at Fox Hills and Morningside Elementary must participate this year in the assessments. In addition, sixth graders interested in taking GT classes in junior high must also be tested. It is not necessary for 6thgraders registering for honors classes to be tested. If you would like your child to participate in the Advanced Learner testing please notify your student’s teacher by October 11. There will then be a form that will be sent home that needs to be filled out before a seat for testing can be reserved.

T E A C H E R F E AT U R EWelcome to Mrs. Riggs!

We have a new fourth grade teacher at Upland. Her name is Mrs. Riggs and she comes to us with 26 years experience in education. She is married and has two grown sons and four grandchildren.

Some of her favorite things include the color blue (which will not surprise you when you learn her favorite team is the BYU Cougars), shopping at Dillard’s, crocheting, and spending time with her family. She loves M&M’s and her favorite drink is milk.

Mexican food is her favorite food and she knows all the best restaurants. El Rancho Grande tops her list for places to eat. Mysteries are her most loved genre and she loves to read anything by Gordon Korman.

Some of the places she has visited are Switzerland, East and West Germany, and Alaska. We are just glad that she decided to settle down here with us!
