UPLAE IN THE GRAND MANNER is a product of over 10-year experience in facilitating UPLAE review classes at various review centers in Metro Manila. The endeavor of publishing a comprehensive study material for the UPLAE started when I realized that the competition is getting tougher every year that even honor students from different colleges and universities can hardly pass the U.P. Law Aptitude Examination. It was in 1997, during my 2nd year in college taking up B.S. Psychology, that I attempted to conduct a research—as part of the requirements to complete the subject STAT 101—with an objective to understand the demographics of the UPLAE applicants. It was an interesting statistical inquiry for me as I was thinking of entering the College of Law after my undergraduate studies. Surprisingly, I discovered that in the previous year’s UPLAE, about 40% of the takers were honor students, the cream of the crop from different colleges and universities in the country. But of this cluster of applicants, only 9% were able to pass the UPLAE. It was a big realization for me that in order to enter the country’s premier law school, I had to be more competitive than those students with “laude” on their transcript of records. But I was just an average and sometimes immature student. So as early as my sophomore year, I already planned how to outsmart other students, whom I would compete with in the future for the College admission, by researching on the coverage of the UPLAE. In 2000, I, together with my three cousins, took the aptitude examination. Four of us prepared hard for the UPLAE. But only two of us managed to pass the entrance examination. I was just an ordinary, average student with no medal or academic awards. But my success in surviving the four-hour long aptitude examination is a result of my hard-working attitude to know what to expect during the examination day. While it was a big accomplishment for me, I did not actually pursue studying Law. It was not really a sudden change of heart. I received a scholarship grant to pursue higher learning in Psychology in India which I found myself to be more passionate about than Law. But before I went to India, I had tutored my other two cousins for the UPLAE of the following year. And they finally passed in 2001. When I went back to the Philippines after more than 2 years of studying in India, I was asked to be a guest lecturer in one of the UPLAE review centers in Manila. Being a Psychometrician with a few Philosophy subjects completed during my undergraduate studies, I was assigned to handle the Abstract Reasoning and Logical Reasoning module for the class. There were about 15 students coming from different universities such as UP, Ateneo, Miriam College, La Salle, UST, etc. enrolled in the review class offered by the center. Many of them were still taking up their undergraduate studies at that time and only few had already completed their Bachelor’s degree. All the fifteen of them passed the UPLAE. I am not claiming that they succeeded entirely because of my facilitation. But I am confident that I became a big part of their success. Holding review classes and doing consultancy work for different review centers for UPCAT, UPLAE and civil service became the center of my career until November of 2012. Currently, I am based in London as a Psychometrician. For aspiring UP Law student, passing the Law Aptitude Examination is just one hurdle out of so many hurdles that you will face in reaching your ultimate goal to be a Lawyer with UP diploma. Hopefully, this study material will let you overcome that first obstacle and help you prepare for the UPLAE IN THE GRAND MANNER. Martino Jose
