WHAT IS IOT IN HEALTHCARE…?

Definitions are important!

• We have tendency to screw up definitions…– we call strategy a strategy even while it has no

single component of strategy…– we call person a leader even while he does not

lead…– bass players call themselves musicians…

• IoT = Internet of Things– does it mean the Internet as we all know…?– …or whatever net?– …or whatever connection?

What of these, or all…?

• Device-to-Device information transfer (no internet)

• Device-to-System information transfer (no internet)

• System-to-Device information transfer (no internet)

• System-to-System information transfer (no internet)

• Device-to-Cloud information transfer (on internet)

• System-to-Cloud information transfer (on internet)

• Anything connecting to anything (whatever net)

HISTORY

Page 8: Upgraded Life Festival 2015. Janne Aaltonen, HYKSin

8

Connectivity has been important

• Medical information systems have been interconnected as long as it has been possible– LIS to MIS– PACS to RIS– etc.

• Many medical devices today are connected to the information systems– in hospital– at home

TRUE IoT…?

• Device-to-Device via Cloud…?• Doesn’t bring my mind anything… YET!

FUTURE & BENEFIT

Page 16: Upgraded Life Festival 2015. Janne Aaltonen, HYKSin

16

What TRUE IoT could be…?

• Closed-loop anaesthesia– BIS-monitor to infusion pump connection, etc.

• Physiologic insulin-pump control– Insulin pump controlled by pedometer, etc.

• Self-adjusting CT/MRI devices– Adjusted by image analysis – no nurse needed

anymore?

• …or lots of other things!• Why isn’t there any?

– It can kill you, if it’s malfunctioning

It’s coming… some day!

Needs – Benefits?

• Shortage of personnel is problem now already– IoT can make processes self-operational– IoT can make patient to do it by himself/herself

• Quality can always be approved– IoT can make adjustment more timely and

precise– IoT doesn’t suffer from deficiencies of human

senses

• Service… is there any…?– IoT isn’t impatient nor has bad days– IoT can alert and help in self-diagnosis; better

access

Efficiency

Quality

Perception
