1 ProgramIntroduction

1.1 ProgramDescription

Radiographyisanalliedhealthprofessionthatinvolvesimagingoftheformandfunctionofhumananatomyusingionizingradiationforthepurposeofdiagnosingand/ortreatingpathologicalconditions.

TheProgramofferedbytheUPEISchoolofRadiographypreparesstudentsforentryintothiseverevolvingprofession.StudentswillachieveclinicalproficiencyinallaspectsofRadiographyandwillattainallcompetenciesasdetailedintheCanadianAssociationofMedicalRadiationTechnologists(CAMRT)Competencyprofile.Thisprofile,developedbytheCAMRT,providestheprogramwiththeframeworkforitscurriculum.UponsuccessfulcompletionofthenationalcertificationexamthegraduatewillbecomeaRegisteredTechnologistinRadiography(RTR)andiseligibletopracticeinmostCanadianprovinces.

TheUPEISchoolofRadiographyoffersafouryearintegratedDegreeprogramwithstudentscompletingbothhospital-basedcourses(designatedasQEHinallProgramliterature)anduniversity-basedcoursesattheUniversityofPrinceEdwardIsland(UPEI).

UponcompletionofallProgramrequirements,studentsareeligibletowritetheCAMRTcertificationexamThisexamisdevelopedandadministratedthroughtheCAMRT;passingthisexamisarequirementforemploymentonPEIandinmostotherprovinceswithinCanada.

1.3 RadiographyasaProfession

Therewardsofthisprofessionaregreatbuttherearebothphysicalandpsychologicaldemandsofwhichstudentsshouldbeaware.Theseincludetheabilitytobeonone’sfeetforprolongedperiodsandtheabilitytoenduresustainedphysicalactivitysuchasliftingandpositioningpatients.Thestudentmusthavesufficientvisualacuitytoperformalltherequiredtaskssuchasimagereviewandassessment.

Thereisalsosomerisktostudentsduetoexposuretoionizingradiation,disease,bodilyfluids,andmusculoskeletalinjury.Somestudentsmayalsofindthattheemotionalandpsychologicaldemandsoftheprofessionhaveadetrimentaleffectontheirwellbeing.Thesedemandsmayincludebeinginvolvedinstressfultraumascenariosorinthemorguesetting.Somestudentsarenotwellequippedtodealwiththesightofsevereinjuryandbloodlosssotheschoolrecommendsthatprospectivestudentsconsider“jobshadowing”priortoapplying.

AnystudentwhoisfeelingstressedduetothenatureofthejobwillbedirectedtotheHealthPEIEmployeeAssistanceprogramortheUPEIStudentAffairsdepartment.http://www.upei.ca/studentlife/student-affairs/counselling

1.8 ProgressingthroughProgram

• OnceacceptedintotheRadiographyProgram,studentsenterintothesecondyearoftheprogram.• AllQEHcourses,includingclinical,mustbetakenintheorderprescribedbytheProgram.Students

cannotprogresstolateryearswithoutcompletingallrequirementsofthepreviousyear.Thisincludes:o AchievingapassinggradeinALLQEHcourses(NOTE:ApassinggradeinQEHcoursesis70%)o Completingallclinicalrequirements

• QEHdesignatedcourses(exceptclinical)areallheldatHillsboroughHospital(115DeaconGroveLane,Charlottetown)

• Insecondyear,studentsspendapproximately1.5daysperweekinclinicalpractice.Thisisinadditiontoclassroomcourses.

• Infirstsemesterofthirdyearandsecondsemesteroffourthyear,studentsspend2.5-3daysinclinicalpractice.Again,thisisinadditiontoclassroombasedcourses.

• Insecondsemesterofthirdyearandfirstsemesteroffourthyear,studentstakeUPEIcoursesonlyandwillnotbeinclinicalpracticeduringthesemester.

• Attheendofthewintersemesterinsecondyear,studentscompleteatenweekclinicalpracticum;inthirdyearthisbecomesa14weekpracticum.

• AllclinicalpracticaaremandatoryandmustbecompletedatthetimeandlocationsetforthbytheClinicalCoordinator(JulieHall).

2.1 Attendance• Attendanceatclinicalismandatory.Anytimemissedfromaclinicalpracticummayneedtobe

resolvedinordertoprogressfurtherintheProgram.TheClinicalCoordinatorwilldeterminehowandwhenmissedtimewillberesolved.

• AttendanceatQEHcoursesisstronglyencouraged.ItistheresponsibilityoftheindividualcourseInstructortodeterminetheattendancerequirementsofhis/hercourse.Missedtimemayresultinadeductioningradeoradesignationofanincompleteforthecourse.

2.2 Punctuality• Arrivingontimeforclinicalpracticaisessential.Astudentwhoischronicallylatemaybe

requiredtomakeupthemissedtimebeforeprogressingthroughtheProgram.• Astudentwhoarriveslateforclassmaynotbepermittedtojoinaclassinprogressifitis

deemeddisruptivetootherstudents.Thismayresultinthestudentbeingmarkedabsent.Studentswhoarrivelateforquizzesorexamswillnotbeallowedadditionaltime.

2.3 StudentAttire• WhileattendingQEHclassesatHillsboroughHospital,thestudentmaywearcasualclothingof theirownchoosingwithsomerestrictions:

• Whileatclinical,studentsmustadheretohospitaldresscode(seeclinicalsectionofhandbook)

2.4 Tattoos&Piercings• Nofacialpiercings(withtheexceptionofdiscreetnose/eyebrow)allowedwhileatclinical• Tattoosarepermitted,however,studentsmayberequiredtocovertattooswhileatclinical.

2.5 ElectronicDevices• UseofelectronicdevicessuchasSmartphones/tabletsisnotpermittedduringclass

o Allphonesmustbeturnedofforplacedon“silent”duringclasso Thesedevicesarepermittedduringlunchbreaks.

• Useofcellphonesduringclinicalpracticaisnotpermittedexceptinlunch/breakarea

2.6 CriminalRecordCheck• Studentsmustsupplyavulnerablepersons’criminalrecordchecktoUPEIbeforebeginningthe Program.• Studentsareresponsibleforanycostsincurred.

2.7 CPRTraining• StudentsmustacquireandmaintaincertificationinCPR.Trainingwillbeprovidedfreeofcharge

throughouttheProgram.• TheProgramwillselectthetimeandlocationofCPRtraining.• AnystudentwhoisunabletoattendCPRtrainingmayberequiredtoacquirecertification

throughaprivatebusinessatthestudent’sownexpense.

2.8 Venipuncture• PerformingvenipunctureisamandatorypartoftheProgram.Duringvenipuncturetraining

studentsmaypracticeonfellowstudentsandstaff.Toallowstudentstopracticevenipunctureoneachother,signedconsentmustbefirstobtained.

2.9 ClinicalSimulations• AnimportantaspectoftheRadiographyPrograminvolvesthesimulationofradiographicexams.

Duringsimulationstudentswillpracticeradiographicpositioningontheirclassmates.

2.10 AccesstoFacilities• StudentsmayhaveaccesstoclassroomslocatedatHillsboroughHospitalduringweekends,

eveningsandholidays.AccesstoInstructors’officesafterhoursisnotpermitted.• RadiographystudentshavefullaccesstoallUPEIfacilitiessuchasthegym,library,healthcenter,

etc.• Accesstoradiographicexamroomsisonlypermittedunderdirectsupervisionofaprogram

Instructorordesignatedcertifiedmedicalradiationtechnologist.

2.11 ComputerUse• Studentswillbeissuedausernameandpasswordwhichwillgivethemaccesstoanycomputer

intheIslandHealthnetwork.o TherearecomputersdesignatedforstudentuseatHillsboroughHospital

• StudentsaresubjecttoallHealthPEIguidelinespertainingtocomputeruseo Seepage11-12athttp://www.gov.pe.ca/photos/original/hpei_employhand.pdf

2.12 Pregnancy• AstudentwhobecomespregnantwhileintheRadiographyprogramshallbeallowedto

continueintheProgram.• Anytimemissedfromclinicalasaresultofpregnancywillneedtobecompletedbeforethe

studentcanprogressintothefollowingyearoftheProgram.• PregnantstudentswillbeissuedanadditionalTLDasperQEHpolicy

2.13 RequestforDeferment• TheUPEISchoolofRadiographyProgramisdesignedforstudentstocompletewithinthe

designated,fouryear,timeframe.

• Thesequencingofcoursesandintegrationofclinicalpracticewithdidacticlearningaimstoallowstudentstobuilduponpreviouslearningandexperienceastheyprogressfromyeartoyear.

• AfterbeginningthePrograminSeptemberofsecondyear,studentsneverspendmorethan14weeksawayfromtheclinicalenvironment.

• ItisstronglyrecommendedthatstudentscompletetheProgramasitwasdesigned;defermentisnotencouraged.

• Defermentwillbeconsidereduponrequestbutisnotguaranteed.ConsenttodefercompletionoftheProgramwillbedependentuponmanyfactors,includingbutnotlimitedto:

o AvailabilityofclinicalplacementsforthestudentuponreturntotheProgramo Academicandclinicalstandingofstudentwhendefermentisrequested.o Reasonsforrequestingdeferment.o Grantingofdeferralisentirelyatthediscretionofthefacultycommittee.

• Studentmayberequiredtocompleteadditionalclinicalpracticaifdefermentisgranted.StudentsmayalsoberequiredtocompleteadditionalacademictestingbeforereturningtocompletetheProgram.

2.14 RegistrationinNon-QEHCoursesduringtheProgram• StudentsarerequiredtoregisterinadditionalUPEIcoursesduringthePrograminordertocompletedegreerequirements(consultwww.upei.ca)

• Duringtheradiographyfocusedsemesters,studentswishingtoenrollinnon-QEHdesignatedcoursesmustconsultwiththeProgramcoordinator

• StudentsmustseekpermissionfromtheProgramCoordinatorpriortoregisteringforanySpringorSummersemestercoursesatUPEI.IfpermissiontoregisterforaSpringorSummersemestercourseisgranted,thestudentwillberesponsibleformakingupanytimemissedfromclinical.TheClinicalCoordinatorwilldeterminewhenandwhereanymissedtimeisresolved.

2.15 StudentRecords• Allstudentrecordsarekeptstrictlyconfidential.• FilesarestoredinalockedfilecabineteitheratHillsboroughHospitalorattheQEH.• Studentsmayaccesstheirrecordsuponrequest.• Theprogramwillnotshareastudent’srecordswithoutexpresswrittenpermissionfromthe

student.• AllstudenttranscriptsandfinalgradescanbeaccessedelectronicallythroughtheUPEIstudent

login.

4 Clinical

4.1 IntroductiontoClinicalPractica� Theclinicalcomponentof theradiographyprogramgivesthestudentachanceto implement

the knowledge attained in the didactic setting. It is incumbent upon the student to availthemselvesofeveryopportunitytoobserveorperformacasetoensurethattheybecomethebestradiographerpossible.

� Studentsbeginclinicalpracticeimmediately(weekafterprogramorientation)andthroughouttheprogramcompletetheequivalentof43-44weeksofclinical

� The student will initially be subject to direct supervision and later, as skills aremore highlydeveloped they will require only indirect supervision (See 4.7). Progression from direct toindirectsupervisionwillbeatthediscretionoftheclinicalcoordinator.

� The student should be aware of potential circumstances that may cause them physical orpsychologicalharm.DealingwithseverelyinjuredpatientsmaybetraumatizingtothestudentandcertaincasesmayexposethestudenttodiseasessuchasTB,HIV,andhepatitis.VisitstothemorgueortheOperatingRoommayalsobeupsetting.

� Whileatclinical,studentsaremostlygovernedbypoliciesofHealthPEIregardingemployees.TheHealthPEIEmployeeHandbookcanbeviewedhere.

4.2 Expectations● Thestudentmustbepresentatassignedworkareafiveminutesbeforethescheduledshift.

4.5 Attire• Whenatclinicalstudentsmustwearaclean,wrinkle-free,wellfittinghealthcareuniform• FootwearwornintheclinicalsettingmustmeetthestandardsetforthintheHealthPEIEmployee

Handbook(seepage38)• Allotherattiremustbeinkeepingwithaprofessionaldemeanorandinfectioncontrolpoliciesas

discussedinorientationwiththeclinicalcoordinator.

2. Ifanystudentrequiresremediationformorethanoneclinicalcompetency,programfacultywillmeetwiththestudenttodiscusshowtheProgramcanassistthestudentincludingbutnotlimitedto:

AssessmentofClinicalCompetency

Purpose:Toensureafair,transparent,andeffectiveprocessfordeterminingstudents’clinicalcompetenceandtoensurestudentsareinformedofthisprocess.

Procedure:

1.Inordertosuccessfullycompletetheclinicalassessmentprocess,thestudentmustdemonstratecompetencybymeetingallclinicalassessmentrequirementswhichareasfollows:

a.Completionofatotalof35clinicalcompetencyevaluationformsforimagingprocedures;theseevaluationsareindicatedbyacompetencychecklistwhichispostedateachclinicalsite,aswellasineachstudent’sfile.Thestudentmustperformthreecaseswithdirectsupervisionbeforeattemptingaclinicalcompetencyevaluationonthatparticularimagingprocedure.

b.Completionofaclinicalcompetencyequipmentchecklist;thischecklistensuresthateverystudentdemonstratesknowledgeandoperationofvariousimagingsystems,aswellasqualitycontrolprocedures

c.Completionofaprofessionalpracticeassessmentform;thisassessmentisconductedattheendofeachspring/summerclinicalpracticumtoensurestudentprogresswithprofessionalpractice

d.Completionofaprofessionalbehaviorassessmentform;thisformissenttoapreceptortocompleteforeachstudentinvariousclinicalrotations,andateachoftheProgram’sclinicalsites

e.Completionofacompetencysimulationchecklist;tomeetallcompetencieswhichareunabletobemetintheclinicalenvironment

f.CompletionofaClinicalExperienceBooklet;thisbookletistokeeparecordofthevariousimagingproceduresthestudentperformsthroughoutthedurationoftheprogram

2.Thestudentwillattempttoreachtherecommendedtargetforcompletionofclinicalcompetencies,howeverifthetargetisnotmetthestudentwilldiscussaplanofactionwiththeclinicalcoordinator.
